The area is very popular for outdoor activities with plenty of amazing walks and mountain biking trails nearby. The Machno Valley is close to the spectacular Conwy Falls, and includes an old working mill and farmhouse which has been preserved to give a taste of life on a traditional Welsh farm. The area is also full of history, with Ty Mawr Wybrnant, the birthplace of Bishop William Morgan who translated the Bible into Welsh nearby. Dolwyddelan Castle, along with some churches and chapels are also very interesting places to visit. Outside: To the front there is a small garden laid with stone chippings and shrubbery. From the old Hall can be seen the whole county as far as Plas Iolyn, in Cerrig-y-Drydion and along the face of Hiraethog to Hafodty, home of Lord Penrhyn, in Glan Conway, and the view of it from a distance is excellent. ................ A little lower down we find Pandy, which was formerly called Y Pentre. .......... The slope between Coed y Ffynnon and Pandy is covered with oak trees of gigantic size, and they have reached the beauty of maturity; there is talk of cutting them next Spring and a great pity if so, for old Wales owes to them one of its chief distinctions. We are sure that they many times sheltered and protected Hugh Machno as he composed his intricate poetry. ” (From Gethin Jones' essay on Penmachno written in the mid 19th century.) Owen Gethin Jones (1816-83). He was probably the most prominent person to come from Penmachno after the Bishop Morgan who translated the Bible into Welsh.

    3) Penmachno to Betws-y-Coed Close to the Machno mills, the minor road leading back to Betws-y-Coed crosses the River Machno by means of a stone arch known as Pant Bridge, built c1850. Just downstream may be seen a fine example of a medieval pack-horse bridge, a single-segmental arch often misleadingly referred to as "Roman Bridge"; an attempt no doubt to promote tourist interest. The remains of another derelict fulling mill, "Pandy Mill", are to be found further along the road near the junction of the Conwy and Machno rivers (808532). Hereabouts also there is some evidence of an old salmon ladder, which enabled fish returning to the spawning grounds to climb up the falls. The present village of Penmachno came into being principally as a result of development of the local slate quarries, although its previous importance as a river crossing is represented by the old three-arched bridge, Pont Llan. Unusually these arches are of elliptical profile, the design of which (according to the plaque) is attributed to "I. Hughes, The Harry Parry of Carnarvon", and dates from 1785. The atmosphere of the quarrying community is still strongly evident in the workmen's cottages and chapels of Glanaber Terrace, hard by the workings themselves. Cwm Machno Slate Quarries, although fairly large and in production as recently as 1961, did not share the fame of other concerns at nearby Ffestiniog, and was typical of a medium-sized company operating by traditional methods. The slate mill stands stripped of machinery in the quarry floor; the pit for a 16 ft waterwheel that provided power for saws and trimmers is clearly visible alongside, and a small foundry was housed in the adjacent building.

Five timbers dated – one truss in a bedroom, three from joists in the entrance passage and one from an axial beam in the kitchen. The most likely date of construction is 1564 or within a year or two after this date. (See Oxford Dendrochronology Laboratory Report) 1956 RCAHMW Caernarvonshire Inventory Volume I 1956 page 169/170 Bennar: A two-storeyed house with a T-shaped plan. The head of the T, on a NE –SW axis, is dated 1693; the stem is probably 16th century. The walls are of roughly coursed rubble, the roofs of modern slate. Standing on ground rising steeply to the SW, the house has a fine symmetrical front. It is approached by an axial stone stairway containing seats in recesses, and leading to a small garden terrace. To the NE is a small 17th century cottage, now used as an outhouse. The older block is entered from the NE, where the original doorway and long horizontally proportioned windows remain. The other walls are hidden by later buildings, and a large part of the SE side has been removed. Internally the original ceiling of massive stop- chamfered beams and joists remains, including a trimmed opening in the N corner, evidently the site of an early stair or ladder.
