Long forgotten, it has emerged recently as a brilliant destination that offers an endless spectrum of natural wonders in the form of glaciers, mountains, waterfalls, volcanoes, thermal pools, and ocean side villages, all within a vast setting of silence and grandeur. It is truly the “Land of Fire and Ice.” This August, the twelfth in the Open Center’s series of conferences on the Esoteric Quest will take place on the Snaefellsnes Peninsula in the West of Iceland, a place long held sacred in Norse Mythology. Its sparkling ocean and long ridge of protective mountains terminate in the Great Snow Mountain Glacier itself, Snæfellsjökull, long seen as a holy place. While Norse mythology itself is filled with fascination and spiritual depth, there also was much more to the Vikings than the familiar stereotype of plunder and mayhem. They were not only warriors and raiders, but also adventurers, artists and shamans who deeply valued the Völvas, seeresses capable of peering into the future. The Icelandic sagas, a major source of inspiration for Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings trilogy, are filled, in the words of Seamus Heaney, with “the poetry of the North Atlantic … testimony to the spirit’s ability not only to endure what fate may send it but to be renewed by the experience.” Once again, we invite you to join leading scholars, writers, artists and adventurers as together we enter the great Mysteries of the North in one of the most magical realms on earth. The Esoteric Quest starts with an optional pre-conference day in which we will bathe in the Blue Lagoon, the most famous thermal waters in Iceland, visit a Viking museum, and enjoy dinner in Reykjavik.     MARBURG JOURNAL OF RELIGION, Vol. 22, No. 1 (2020) 1 Pilgrims to Thule: Religion and the Supernatural in Travel Literature about Iceland Matthias Egeler Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München Abstract The depiction of religion, spirituality, and/or the ‘supernatural’ in travel writing, and more generally interconnections between religion and tourism, form a broad and growing field of research in the study of religions. This contribution presents the first study in this field that tackles tourism in and travel writing about Iceland. Using three contrasting pairs of German and English travelogues from the 1890s, the 1930s, and the 2010s, it illustrates a number of shared trends in the treatment of religion, religious history, and the supernatural in German and English travel writing about Iceland, as well as a shift that happened in recent decades, where the interests of travel writers seem to have undergone a marked change and Iceland appears to have turned from a land of ancient Northern mythology into a country ‘where people still believe in elves’. The article tentatively correlates this shift with a change in the Icelandic self-representation, highlights a number of questions arising from both this shift and its seeming correlation with Icelandic strategies of tourism marketing, and notes a number of perspectives in which Iceland can be a highly relevant topic for the research field of religion and tourism.     The Icelandic Federalist Papers No. 8: Other Defects of the Present Constitution (continued) To the People of Iceland: In addition to the possible defects, namely the environmental rights previously enumerated, that appear to be in the present constitution, there are others of no less importance that need to be discussed, specifically, the restrictions on religious freedom caused by the establishment of an official state religion. A constitution both frames and reflects the political consciousness in a society. The exercise of political freedom coincides with a constitution;1 constitutional regimes are constantly assimi- lated to virtuous forms of power. Yet it does not mean that the situation might not be improved and that things have to remain stable and inflexible. On the contrary, either a constitution is vague enough so that it is possible to comprehend things from a different contemporary perspec- tive whenever it is required, or it might be amended. Amending only permits some minor chang- es when the wording is already precise. The English philosophers Thomas Hobbes and John Locke in the 17th century and the French philosopher Jean-Jacques Rousseau in the 18th century defined a constitution as a social contract between the government and the people of a country. They laid down the solid foundations of modern constitutionalism. This contract involves retain- ing certain natural rights. Among these rights, today, an essential one is freedom of religion. Freedom of religion is developed in Articles 62, 63, and 64 of the present charter. In the case of the present constitution, it enables an amendment by law enacted by Althingi as far as freedom of conscience is concerned that is not embodied by a state-church separation.

McDougall Kt.: 011090-3979 Leiðbeinandi: Steinunn Kristjánsdóttir September 2015 This is a study in the medieval Christian tradition and how it played out across distance and physical boundaries. It is meant to explore how Skriðuklaustur, a monastery in Iceland, is an example of how far reacting Christianity was at the time. The differences and similarities to other monasteries at the time are discussed and shown through the lens of their symbolic meanings as opposed to their face value. The first step is to study the layout of the monasteries and how deviation from the accepted layout affected the monastery. Secondly, the building materials are examined and explored in their geographical context. Lastly, the hospital of Skriðuklaustur is observed and tied into the traditional monastic hospitals of the time. In the conclusion the importance is placed on how the differences and similarities tie Skriðuklaustur into the Christian monastic institution despite the isolated location. In modern Icelandic archaeology, however, the Icelandic literary record, apart from official documents such as censuses, has not been considered a viable source for interpretation since the early 20th century. Although the Icelandic corpus is problematic in several ways, it is a source that should be used in Icelandic archaeological interpretation, if used properly with source criticism. This dissertation aims to advance Icelandic archaeological theory by reintegrating the medieval and post-medieval Icelandic literary corpus back into archaeological interpretation. The literature can help archaeologists working in Iceland to find pagan religious themes that span time and place.

Costs have been reduced and we are now more “stream­ lined” than before the crisis began. Nominations from clients have begun to return, so that as we go into 2010 our momentum is at a completely different level than that seen generally in 2009. Increased volumes are also helping the system to function more efficiently. Overall, all these factors constitute a positive element in the continued strengthening of our relative competitive position. In a longer­term perspective, we believe that the decisive factor for earnings will be the development in demand for transport services in our tonnage categories.
