Ecoregion: Grasslands 4/16/03 3:46 PM Grasslands INTRODUCTION About 25% of Earth’s land surface is covered by temperate grassland. These large expanses of flat or hilly country cover much of North America, as well as large areas of Europe, Asia, and South America. Most grasslands are found in the interiors of continents, where there is too little rainfall for a forest but too much rain for a desert. The word savanna comes from the Spanish word zavanna, meaning “treeless plain.” Savannas cover almost half of Africa (mostly central Africa) and large areas of Australia and South America. ABIOTIC DATA The grassland climate is rather dry, averaging about 20 to 100 centimeters (8–40 inches) of precipitation a year. Summers are very hot and may reach 45°C (113°F). Winter temperatures often fall below freezing, which is 0°C (32°F). -

California State Wildlife Action Plan (SWAP) 2015 Central California Coast Region Annual and Perennial Grassland Habitat About Our Region and the Grassland Habitat Annual grassland habitats are open grasslands composed primarily of annual plant species such as introduced annual grasses and forbs. Annual grasslands also occur as understory plants in Valley Oak Woodland and other habitats. Perennial grassland habitats occur as coastal prairie and interspersed within annual grasslands. Vernal pools also are an important habitat component of many grassland systems. The structure of grasslands depends upon prevailing weather patterns and grazing. A number of wildlife species spend their entire life within grasslands while others use grasslands for foraging and breeding. What are the sensitive species found in the grassland habitat? C e n t r a l B a s i n a n d R a n g e Ecoregion 10 is an arid grassland and sagebrush steppe that is surrounded by moister, predominantly forested, mountainous ecoregions. Paleoproterozoic mafic and ultramafic volcanic rocks in the South Savo region, eastern Finland. Geological Survey of Finland, Bulletin 407, 63–84, 11 figures and 1 table. Ultramafic and mafic volcanic rocks are present as sporadic interlayers in the Paleo- proterozoic Svecofennian paragneiss units in the South Savo region of eastern Finland. These elongated volcanic bodies display locally well-preserved primary structures, have a maximum thickness of ca. 500 m and a maximum length of several kilometres. Geo- chemically, the ultramafic variants are picrites, whereas the mafic members display EMORB-like chemical compositions. The picrites, in particular, display significant com- positional variation in both major and trace elements (light rare earth and large-ion lithophile elements). These differences may have been caused by differences in their magma source, variable degrees of crustal contamination and post-magmatic altera- tion, as well as crystal accumulation and fractionation processes. The volcanic units are interpreted to represent extensional phase(s) in the development of the sedimentary basin(s) where the protoliths of the paragneisses were deposited. Conservation Action Alert Tell Southline to Steer Clear of Sensitive Wildlife Habitats Like the Willcox Playa/Cochise Lakes Globally Important Bird Area SUMMARY Southline Transmission, LLC, proposes to construct, operate, and maintain a high-voltage power line in two segments totaling approximately 360 miles – spanning federal, state and private lands. Southline would provide capacity for an additional 1,000 megawatts of electricity. Unfortunately, the route the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) has chosen as the ―preferred alternative‖ in the project’s Draft Environmental Impact Statement would negatively impact numerous sensitive wildlife habitats, including the Willcox Playa Globally Important Bird Area. Tucson Audubon is encouraging the BLM and the project proponents to consider alternatives that would avoid and minimize negative impacts to sensitive wildlife habitats. BACKGROUND Southline Transmission, LLC proposes to construct a 360 mile transmission line with two distinct segments. The first segment would be a new double circuit 345-kilovolt transmission line from a substation in Afton, New Mexico (south of Las Cruces), to a substation in Apache, Arizona (south of Willcox). The second segment would upgrade and rebuild approximately 130 miles of existing transmission lines between the Apache substation and the Saguaro substation northwest of Tucson. In theory, the 1,000 megawats added capacity could increase grid reliability and increase the electrical system’s ability to receive and transmit new sources of locally produced energy. -

Southeast Arizona, USA 29th December 2019 - 11th January 2020 By Samuel Perfect Bird Taxonomy for this trip report follows the IOC World Bird List (v 9.2) Site info and abbreviations: Map of SE Arizona including codes for each site mentioned in the text Twin Hills Estates, Tucson (THE) 32.227400, -111.059838 The estate is by private access only. However, there is a trail (Painted Hills Trailhead) at 32.227668, - 111.038959 which offers much the same diversity in a less built up environment. The land in the surrounding area tends to be private with multiple “no trespassing” signs so much of the birding had to be confined to the road or trails. Nevertheless, the environment is largely left to nature and even the gardens incorporate the natural flora, most notably the saguaro cacti. The urban environment hosts Northern Mockingbird, Mourning Dove and House Finch in abundance whilst the trail and rural environments included desert specialities such as Cactus Wren, Phainopepla, Black-throated Sparrow and Gila Woodpecker. Saguaro National Park, Picture Rocks (SNP) 32.254136, -111.197316 Although we remained in the car for much of our visit as we completed the “Loop Drive” we did manage to soak in much of the scenery of the park set in the West Rincon Mountain District and the impressive extent of the cactus forest. Several smaller trails do border the main driving loop, so it was possible to explore further afield where we chose to stop. There is little evidence of human influence besides the roads and trails with the main exception being the visitor centre (see coordinates). -
