2021 Open Pollinated/Heirloom Tomato Seedling Advance Order Listing Thank you for looking at my listing of tomato varieties that can be pre-ordered for the 2021 season. The deadline for pre-ordering is APRIL 15th. I am sorry, no late orders accepted. *** Please be aware that I fill the orders in the order I receive them. Ordering early guarantees you receive your choices. I do anticipate being very busy this year. It would be wonderful if we had safely made our way through the pandemic in time for me to hold my regular Victoria Day weekend sale, but as I write this in mid-January I think that will not be the case. In order to get my seedlings to you as safely as possible, I will again go back to doing sales by appointments, just as I did last year. I will be wearing a mask and ask that you please wear one also. *** If you are picking up preordered tomato seedlings only, there is no need at all to schedule an appointment. Simply let me know when you would like to come to pick them up and I will have your plants ready for contactless pick up. If however you are interested in additional plants, please make an appointment with me. You will accompany me back to my hoop house and I will spend half an hour helping you with additional selections. Tomato seedlings are the only plants available for preorder because I simply don’t have the time to pick out everything else. What else do I grow? Many, many things...most veggies, herbs and some flowers as well.

  • THE CHEMICAL and GENETIC BASIS of TOMATO FLAVOUR Piotr
THE CHEMICAL AND GENETIC BASIS OF TOMATO FLAVOUR Piotr Jasionowicz, MSc. Thesis submitted to the University of Nottingham for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy July 2012 ABSTRACT Tomatoes often lack the characteristic good taste that consumers expect. In recent years, the fruit and vegetable industry has focused on traits such as yield, colour, and fruit size; however, flavour has been largely forgotten, at least for varieties that are grown in bulk and are cheap to purchase. Tomato volatiles are one of the most important flavour contributors along with sugars and organic acids. Over 400 volatiles are present in tomato, but only about 30 are considered critical to tomato flavour. The purpose of this study was to identify volatile Quantitative Trait Loci (vQTL) using publicly available Solanum pennellii and Solanum habrochaites introgression lines (ILs). Detection of vQTL is an essential milestone for identification of candidate genes involved in tomato flavour. Identification of vQTL was undertaken by screening the ILs using Atmospheric Pressure Chemical Ionisation Mass Spectrometry (APCI-MS) and Gas Chromatography Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS). Additionally key volatiles and their interactions were evaluated in a series of sensory experiments using tomato juice and tomato purée. The study revealed that, the S. pennellii population had several major effects including those on IL1-4, which had a vQTL for C6 volatile E-2-hexenal. It was possible to identify a sub-IL, 1-4-1 that also harboured this vQTL. In this IL1-4- 1 region of chromosome 1, 122 genes were present including a possible, candidate gene likely to be involved in lipoxygenase pathway.

2019 Open Pollinated/Heirloom Tomato Seedling Advance Order Listing Thank you for looking at my listing of tomato varieties that can be pre-ordered for the 2019 season. The deadline for pre-ordering is APRIL 15th. I am sorry, no late orders accepted. My “Tomato Days” sale this year will be held on the Victoria Day weekend, May 18, 19 and 20, from 8-4 pm. But there is no rush to be here on that weekend as I remain open up until mid to late June for seedling sales. Also available is a very big selection of peppers, sweet and extremely hot, eggplants and most other heirloom vegetables, herbs and some flowers. As I tell everyone, I grow a lot of different things, some you know and some you may not. I have really changed up my listing this year and you will see there are lots of the newer tomatoes on it. They are just far too interesting to not consider. They may be different than what you think tomatoes often look like, but don’t be fooled. The flavour and taste are definitely what you want from your fruit. There are some amazing people out there doing the work of breeding these tomatoes; Tom Wagner, Brad Gates, J and L Gardens to mention a few. I also have a number of dwarf varieties from the “Dwarf Tomato Project “led by Craig Le Houllier and Patrina Nuske-Small….more varieties are here on my sale dates. But don’t think these are tomatoes that are bred in labs, they are not.
