But what does that mean to you? As your local water provider, Cal Water has adequate water supplies to meet your needs through 2014. Still, as we face the driest year on record, your conservation efforts are critically important. Most residential water use occurs outdoors, so you can make a big difference by: • reducing sprinkler run times • planting native landscaping • watering only when needed • using mulch to maintain moisture • repairing leaking or over-spraying irrigation systems For information on rebates and other conservation programs available to you, visit calwater.com/conservation or your local Cal Water Customer Center. We will continue to monitor drought conditions as the year progresses. Please look for updates at calwater.com.

PLEASANTON/LIVERMORE VALLEY | 900 Main Street 925.251.1111 THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 20, 2014 THE INDEPENDENT • SECTION A The Secret Garden on Stage at Firehouse The City of Pleasanton Civic Arts Stage Company in partnership with Bay Area Children’s Theatre presents the youth musical theater version of the childhood classic The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnett, adapted for the stage by Thomas W. Olson. The show runs February 28 – March 9, at the Firehouse Arts Center, 4444 Railroad Avenue in Pleasanton. Shows are Fridays at 7:30 p.m., Saturdays at 7:00 p.m., and matinees Saturdays and Sun- days at 2 p.m. Tickets are $12, $15, $18; Child or Senior: $6, $9, $12. Tickets can be purchased online at www.firehousearts.org, by calling 925-931-4848, and in person at the Firehouse Arts Center Box Office, 4444 Railroad Avenue, Pleasanton. The Secret Garden storyline fol- lows 11 year-old Mary Lennox, a young English girl born and raised in India at the turn of the 20th cen- tury, who is orphaned by a cholera outbreak and must return to England to her only living relatives whom she has never met. Thrown into the world of mysterious Misselthwaite Manor in the Yorkshire countryside, Mary must live with her reclusive uncle and his invalid son Colin. Her personality blossoms as she and the young gardener Dickon bring new life to a wondrous neglected secret garden, as well as to her sickly cousin and uncle. The enchanting tale has been re-imagined for TV, films, and stage. When the musical opened on Broadway in 1991, it garnered three Tony Awards and two Drama Desk Awards, and was hailed by USA Today as “A splendid, intelligent musical . . . It’s all you can hope for in children’s theater. But the best surprise is that this show is the most adult new musical of the season.” The BACT/Civic Arts Stage Samantha Herlich and Mason Hekl as Mary and Colin. THE INDEPENDENT • THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 20, 2014 5 Annual International Film Series Arrives at the Vine March 9 The annual International Film Series will screen on Sunday, March 9 and Thursday, March 13 at the Vine Cinema & Alehouse, 1772 1st Street in Livermore. “We love being at the Vine,” notes Riva Gambert, the Film Series director. “Our screenings are a com- munity gathering and the Vine’s location in downtown Livermore makes it an ideal theatre for the public to see our films.” The March 9, 4:30 pm screening is a family-friendly film produced in Poland and Rus- sia. “Igor and the Cranes’ Journey is suitable for 10 year-olds as well as adults. It is an engaging story about a boy’s wish to save the life of a hatchling who can’t accompany his parents on the long bird migration from Russia to Africa,” Gambert explains. The 7:15 pm screening is the highly acclaimed drama Defiance, which follows the Bielski Broth- ers from their escape from the Nazis to their becoming resistance fighters and creating a camp in the forests of Eastern Europe which provides life-giving shelter for hundreds of refugees during World War II. The final film to be shown on March 13 at 7:30 pm is Fill the Void, Israel’s submission for “Best Foreign Film” at the 2013 Oscars. “This is a poignant personal story about a young woman’s dilemma. Should she follow her heart or marry the older man her family believes is the best spouse for the family.” Gambert adds, “Movies are a great way of visiting the world without actually getting on a plane. That’s why our motto is ‘See a Film. See the World.’” The Festival is presented by the Jewish Federation of the East Bay. Members of the Euclid String Quartet (pictured at left), in String Quartet Works with Music Students in Livermore for a performance Del Valle Fine Arts Program at the Bankhead Theater, presented “master classes” at local schools. The performance and classes are sponsored by Del Valle Fine Arts (DVFA), as part of the organization's commitment to bring music into the schools. The first stop was at East Avenue Middle School where the quartet held two sessions, one with beginning strings, a second with advanced string players. At Livermore High School, students from the advanced orchestra worked with the quartet. The final stop was at Christensen Middle School, where the advanced orchestra met with the quartet.
