Professor Webb calls it "Eat, die or learn science" (Webb i973), a comment that invariably comes to mind when some previously untried item of food is put to the lips. A lot of plants used by the Aborigines are definitely survival foods - "eatable but not worth eating" is how the eminent botanist J. D. Hooker described them. There has been opportunity for selection and breeding which might have led to varieties worth cultivating, but food plants from other regions are so far advanced it probably hardly seemed worth while. However a few plants give real pleasure and others give an unusual and uniquely Australian flavour to food. Aborlgi~esas well as using plants as a hl~hpercentage of their diet also appear tc. ILavt had an intimate knowledge of many physiologicaliy active piants. AustraTian Phytochemical research has been largely based on aborlglna usage and has received international acclaim (Webb 1969). It must be stressed that this research is In a fieid where ethical respon- sibilities are implied. Some of the plants included may in some form be toxic to humans. Time, which, amidst the various projects and occupations of man, pursues its course without interruption or delay, has at length brought our labours, as Conductor of the Floricultural Cabinet, to the conclusion of another volume, and it again becomes our duty to present to our readers those observations, which, in the nature of a preface to the present volume, they have a right to claim from us. The close of our seventh volume (in 1839) was the termination of our First Series of this Magazine. We then stated that the next seven volumes would form a Second Series, and the present volume (the fourteenth) is the concluding one. Our annual obser- vations and engagements relative to the past volumes, have statedly been recorded in each, and when we now review the materials with which, by the aid of our respected correspondents we have been enabled to furnish our readers in the present volume, we cannot suppress a feeling of humble, but grateful satisfaction. For useful, instructive, and varied interesting information,—for the choice of the newest, ornamental and beautiful subjects in its coloured figures of plants,—for the accuracy and effect of the execu- tion, we are persuaded that this volume exceeds every predecessor To enable us to accomplish this, we are deeply indebted, as in former years, to our esteemed correspondents, and it now is our pleasing duty again to tender our grateful acknowledgments. -

Ecology of Pyrmont peninsula iii Executive summary City Council’s ‘Sustainable Sydney 2030’ initiative ‘is a vision for the sustainable development of the City for the next 20 years and beyond’. It has a largely anthropocentric basis, that is ‘viewing and interpreting everything in terms of human experience and values’(Macquarie Dictionary, 2005). The perspective taken here is that Council’s initiative, vital though it is, should be underpinned by an ecocentric ethic to succeed. This latter was defined by Aldo Leopold in 1949, 60 years ago, as ‘a philosophy that recognizes[sic] that the ecosphere, rather than any individual organism[notably humans] is the source and support of all life and as such advises a holistic and eco-centric approach to government, industry, and individual’(http://dictionary.babylon.com). Some relevant considerations are set out in Part 1: General Introduction. In this report, Pyrmont peninsula - that is the communities of Pyrmont and Ultimo – is considered as a microcosm of the City of Sydney, indeed of urban areas globally. An extensive series of early views of the peninsula are presented to help the reader better visualise this place as it was early in European settlement (Part 2: Early views of Pyrmont peninsula). The physical geography of Pyrmont peninsula has been transformed since European settlement, and Part 3: Physical geography of Pyrmont peninsula describes the geology, soils, topography, shoreline and drainage as they would most likely have appeared to the first Europeans to set foot there. -

Biodiversity Summary for NRM Regions Species List What is the summary for and where does it come from? This list has been produced by the Department of Sustainability, Environment, Water, Population and Communities (SEWPC) for the Natural Resource Management Spatial Information System. The list was produced using the AustralianAustralian Natural Natural Heritage Heritage Assessment Assessment Tool Tool (ANHAT), which analyses data from a range of plant and animal surveys and collections from across Australia to automatically generate a report for each NRM region. Data sources (Appendix 2) include national and state herbaria, museums, state governments, CSIRO, Birds Australia and a range of surveys conducted by or for DEWHA. For each family of plant and animal covered by ANHAT (Appendix 1), this document gives the number of species in the country and how many of them are found in the region. It also identifies species listed as Vulnerable, Critically Endangered, Endangered or Conservation Dependent under the EPBC Act. A biodiversity summary for this region is also available. Australian Plants Society NORTH SHORE GROUP Ku-ring-gai Wildflower Garden Boronia and other Rutaceae THE FAMILY RUTACEAE Did you know that, • Rutaceae is named after the European herb Ruta graveolens, a small rounded shrub to about 1 m. • Rue comes from the Greek word “rueo”, to set free, referring to the value of this herb as a medicine. • The large family Rutaceae is worldwide and contains about 150 genera and over 1800 species including citrus trees and many ornament shrubs. Within this family is the Tribe Boronieae, with about 320 species in 41 genera which are almost exclusively Australian. They are represented in all states and from diverse bio-regions. In all species, trees and shrubs, the leaves are dotted with glands containing strongly aromatic volatile oils. The flowers are regular (actinomorphic). Flower structure of local genera: 4 petals and 4 stamens - Zieria 4 petals and 8 stamens - Boronia and Correa 5 petals and 10 stamens - Crowea, Eriostemon, Leionema, Phebalium and Philotheca. The ovary is always superior. The fruits consist of 4 or 5 joined carpels. Most are dry and open explosively but some rainforest genera have succulent fruits. Boronia ledifolia (leaves like Ledum) Sydney Boronia. An erect shrub to 1.5m. Stems finely warty and covered with rusty star hairs. Leaves: opposite, 1-foliolate or pinnate with 3-7 leaflets. Margins recurved, dark green and shiny above, paler and hairy below. Flowers: bright pink, star shaped with 4 petals, solitary or in small axillary cymes. Flowering (June) July to October. Habitat: Heath and forest, coast and tablelands NSW, Vic. -

Micropropagation and Horticultural Potential of Native Tasmanian Liliaceae and Iridaceae Volume 3 by Diane Gilmour BSc (lions) Submitted in fulfilment of the requirements of the degree of Doctor of Philosophy School of Plant Science University of Tasmania Hobart June, 2006 Chapter 4 In vitro Propagation of Iridaceae Species 4.1 Introduction As with the Liliaceae, the majority of work on in vitro propagation of the Iridaceae has been concerned with ornamental flower bulb (and corm) genera. Those that feature prominently in the literature include: Iris, Gladiolus, Freesia and Crocus. Other genera which have been propagated in vitro, but to a lesser extent, include Sparaxis and Schizostylis. Apart from Diplarrena moraea (Sward etal., 1997, 1998), the native Australian members of the Iridaceae have not featured in in vitro propagation literature. However, it is possible that Iridaceae species have been researched and grown in vitro by commercial laboratories who have not published their findings. 4.1.1 In vitro propagation of Iris Iris is a large genus of approximately 200 (Cooke, 1986; Bryan, 1994) to 300 species (Hitchmough, 1989; Laublin etal., 1991), and more than 2000 cultivars (Bryan, 1994). Restricted to temperate and subtropical areas of the northern hemisphere (Cooke, 1986; De Munk and Schipper, 1993; Moore et al., 1993; Bryan, 1994), there are 2 main types: rhizomatous and bulbous (Hessayon, 1995). One species has a corm, and it is sometimes elevated to its own genus (Bryan, 1994). The rhizomatous irises (divided into the bearded and beardless types) are generally larger, evergreen perennials (Cooke, 1986; Moore etal., 1993; Hessayon, 1995), while the bulbous irises (varieties described as Dutch, English and Spanish Iris) are smaller, 328 Chapter 4.
