CHEAP THRILLS IN THE LATE SEVENTIES MARK WARREN Russell Jacoby, Social Amnesia, A Critique of Conformist Psychology from Adler to Laing, Boston: Beacon Press, 1975, pp. xxii, 191 . $8 .95 cloth, $3.95, paper. The appearance ofRussellJacoby's SocialAmnesia two years ago was in many ways like a breath of fresh air amidst the ever increasing haze produced by a ris- ing "cult ofsubjectivity" . This cult has appeared on at least two levels: first, as a cultural movement that permeates everyday existence, and second, as a new ideology which, like other movements, has its intellectual vanguard which at- tempts to render the movement plausible. Social Amnesia argues that various strains of contemporary psychology rein- force the bondage of the individual by providing idealistic cures for patently material forms of exploitation . Here, Jacoby draws upon the Freudian Marxism of the original Frankfurt School theorists, most notably Theodor Adorno, Max Horkheimer and Herbert Marcuse. Jacoby suggests that a return to Freud would enable us - in the damaged historical present - to appreciate the deep-seated nature of modern domination. Jacoby argues for a remembrance of a forgotten past - specifically the seminal psychological insights of Freud - as a counter- force to current recipes for liberation as involving only a good attitude and a future- orientedness which refuses to examine the materiality of the present. Here SocialAmnesa~z's primary concern is to show how the theoretical weakness of much contemporary psychology leads to an ideological reproduction of the inhuman. Conformist psychology is theory which has its common denominator in a naive glorification of the individual, being unequipped and unwilling to find the alienating social and economic determinates of that very individuality. -

5/2012-13 Political Space in the Work of Henri Lefebvre: Ideology and Utopia Grégory BUSQUET, UMR LAVUE (Mosaïques), Université Paris Ouest Nanterre The ideas of philosopher and sociologist Henri Lefebvre (1901-1991) are currently experiencing a revival in urban studies in France, while his theories on the city and urban society have been discussed and modified for many years in Anglophone social science literature. This new interest, which moreover extends to Europe, demonstrates however various uses of his philosophy: while some attempt to draw practical applications and to identify the influences of his theories on the practices of The Production of Space and on the usual uses of The Right to the City (Stanek, 2011), some philosophical or biographical exegeses ignore the concrete purpose of his reflections, namely, the socio-spatial processes of alienation, and occasionally at the same time turn up their noses at the setting in which they are expressed (social, political, urbanistic, etc.) and the conditions of their development. While some depoliticize his philosophy, giving it the currently popular slant (post-marxist) and emptying it of its subversive content and emancipating aim, as well as all references to conflict and the class struggle, others, conversely, especially abroad in the work of the supporters of Anglo-Saxon “radical geography”, take their inspiration from Lefebvre and do not allow their thoughts on space to be disassociated from an analysis of class or an analysis in terms of politics1. This article would be in alignment with the latter perspective, resituating Lefebvre’s thought on space and all its criticism, theoretical and practical alike, at the heart of that which in our opinion makes it unique, namely, it’s relationship with the political. -

Contradiction and Overdetermination
Louis Althusser Contradiction and overdetermination In an article devoted to the Young Marx1, I have already stressed the ambiguity of the idea of ‘inverting Hegel’. It seemed to me that strictly speaking this ex- pression suited Feuerbach perfectly; the latter did, indeed, ‘turn speculative philosophy back onto its feet’, but the only result was to arrive with implacable logic at an idealist anthropology. But the expression cannot be applied to Marx, at least not to the Marx who had grown out of this ‘anthropological’ phase. I could go further, and suggest that in the well-known passage: ‘With (Hegel) (the dialectic) is standing on its head. It must be turned right side up again, if you would discover the rational kernel within the mystical shell’2, this ‘turning right side up again’ is merely gestural, even metaphorical, and it raises as many questions as it answers. 15 How should we really understand its use in this quotation? It is no longer a matter of a general ‘inversion’ of Hegel, i.e. the inversion of speculative philosophy as such. From The German Ideology onwards we know that such an undertaking would be meaningless. Anyone who claims purely and simply to have inverted speculative philosophy (to derive, for example, materialism) can never be more than philoso- phy’s Proudhon, its unconscious prisoner, just as Proudhon was the prisoner of bourgeois economics. We are now concerned with the dialectic, and the dialectic alone. It might be thought that when Marx writes that we must ‘discover the rational kernel within the mystical shell’ he means that the ‘rational kernel’ is the dialectic itself, while the ‘mystical shell’ is speculative philosophy. -

No part of this work has been submitted for a higher degree to any other university or institution. e~~~~ Catherine J aniaud ABSTRACT This work investigates the multi-dimensional role of Luis Martfn Santos (1924-1964), best known as the author ofTiempo de silencio. It attempts to reconcile his professional outlook as a psychiatrist with his fictional account of the alienated society of post-war Spain. Our first task is to interlink the Socialist ethos of Martfn-Santos with the Existentialist model of thought adopted by him after Sartre. This methodology, as a rule, dominates the writings of the philosopher/psychiatrist/novelist. We examine the dialectical insight of the philosopher who has attempted to broaden the views of medical psychology by adding new dimensions to the meaning of madness. Following this, we relate his novelistic portrayal of neurosis and psychosis to his overall view of the mental problems encountered in a socially diseased world. By establishing a correspondence between madness in the individuals treated by Martfn-Santos in his medical practice and social alienation among the inhabitants of his war-tom country as depicted in his two novels, we arrive at a synthesis of the existential and Socialist vision of the author's world. -

Ken Gooding Reading 'Reading Capital7* WITHIN THE WORLD OF MARXIST THEORY western Marx ism has developed in richness and responsiveness to reality to the very extent that it has disengaged itself from the scholastification and dogmatisation of Marx’s thought by the Soviet diamat.1 But at this moment there has emerged within western Marxism itself, an interpretation of Marx which shows no intense theoretical quarrel with the diamat but rather turns against the whole of western Marxism within which it was nurtured, an interpretation of Marxism as a ‘science’, an interpretation which summons up the whole nexus of dogmatics associated with the centrality of Das Kapital, economic determinism, antihumanism, and dialectical materialism as Marxist philosophy. Do we have in this interpreta tion whose centre is Louis Althusser, dogmatism returned in disguise inveighing against western Marxism’s non-scientificity, Hegelianism and humanism, a dogmatism that argues for Marxist ‘science’ from the standpoint of Marxist ‘science’? To be sure this circularity is the difficulty encountered in reading Althusser: he argues from the standpoint that is to be argued and is it any wonder then that his nominated adversaries crumble in the face of his arguments? Lewis Department of Philosophy and Religion, Skidmore College [email protected] Abstract As an accompaniment to the translation into English of Louis Althusser’s ‘Letter to the Central Committee of the PCF, March 18th, 1966’, this note provides the historical and theoretical context necessary to understand Althusser’s ‘anti-humanist’ interventions into French Communist Party policy decisions during the mid-1960s. Because nowhere else in Althusser’s published writings do we see as clearly the political stakes involved in his philosophical project, nor the way in which this project evolved from a ‘theoreticist’ pursuit into a more practical one, the note also argues that the letter is of importance to Althusser scholars, to historians of Marxist thought, and to those interested in the relevance of Althusser’s work to contemporary Marxist philosophy.
