5/2012-13 Political Space in the Work of Henri Lefebvre: Ideology and Utopia Grégory BUSQUET, UMR LAVUE (Mosaïques), Université Paris Ouest Nanterre The ideas of philosopher and sociologist Henri Lefebvre (1901-1991) are currently experiencing a revival in urban studies in France, while his theories on the city and urban society have been discussed and modified for many years in Anglophone social science literature. This new interest, which moreover extends to Europe, demonstrates however various uses of his philosophy: while some attempt to draw practical applications and to identify the influences of his theories on the practices of The Production of Space and on the usual uses of The Right to the City (Stanek, 2011), some philosophical or biographical exegeses ignore the concrete purpose of his reflections, namely, the socio-spatial processes of alienation, and occasionally at the same time turn up their noses at the setting in which they are expressed (social, political, urbanistic, etc.) and the conditions of their development. While some depoliticize his philosophy, giving it the currently popular slant (post-marxist) and emptying it of its subversive content and emancipating aim, as well as all references to conflict and the class struggle, others, conversely, especially abroad in the work of the supporters of Anglo-Saxon “radical geography”, take their inspiration from Lefebvre and do not allow their thoughts on space to be disassociated from an analysis of class or an analysis in terms of politics1. This article would be in alignment with the latter perspective, resituating Lefebvre’s thought on space and all its criticism, theoretical and practical alike, at the heart of that which in our opinion makes it unique, namely, it’s relationship with the political. -

No part of this work has been submitted for a higher degree to any other university or institution. e~~~~ Catherine J aniaud ABSTRACT This work investigates the multi-dimensional role of Luis Martfn Santos (1924-1964), best known as the author ofTiempo de silencio. It attempts to reconcile his professional outlook as a psychiatrist with his fictional account of the alienated society of post-war Spain. Our first task is to interlink the Socialist ethos of Martfn-Santos with the Existentialist model of thought adopted by him after Sartre. This methodology, as a rule, dominates the writings of the philosopher/psychiatrist/novelist. We examine the dialectical insight of the philosopher who has attempted to broaden the views of medical psychology by adding new dimensions to the meaning of madness. Following this, we relate his novelistic portrayal of neurosis and psychosis to his overall view of the mental problems encountered in a socially diseased world. By establishing a correspondence between madness in the individuals treated by Martfn-Santos in his medical practice and social alienation among the inhabitants of his war-tom country as depicted in his two novels, we arrive at a synthesis of the existential and Socialist vision of the author's world. -

John Lewis was sitting in the front row of the audience. In the discussion he expressed his disagreement with what he had heard, and, later, his intention to combat it. Early in 1972 he published his article on "The Althusser Case" in Marxism Today. James Klugmann, the editor of the journal, asked Althusser to reply, and this reply appeared in October and November of the same year. -

His two doctoral theses were on Heraclitus and Marx. In addition he translated Heidegger, Georg Lukács, and Karl Korsch. He is best known for his works on the concept of the world—particularly the 1969 book Le jeu du monde—, as one of the editors of the journal Arguments, and as editor of the book series of the same name published by Les Éditions des Minuit. The Birth and Death of Subjectivity in the Works of William Shakespeare and William S. Burroughs (William And William) David Frank Allen1 Psychoanalyst, Private Practise “For Piers Shore & Owen Sweet. In death they shall not be divided”. Abstract We open with the question of subjectivity as it is presented in Hamlet; the focus then moves to the breakdown of subjectivity as experienced in extreme situations and clinical psychosis. Gabel’s idea of continuity from psychosis to ideology (false consciousness) is used to show that William S. Burroughs is in fact a theorist of global ideological pathology. The concept of reification allows us to combine the voices of Gabel and Burroughs. This is not a study of what has been said about Burroughs or Shakespeare, our concern is with the future of the City, not the nature of the finger that points towards it. The cycle of “William & William” refers to the birth and destruction of subjectivity as defined by “conditions such as these”. Figure 1 W. S. Introductory Remarks on Ideology and Sociology Franco Ferrarotti Prof. Emeritus of La Sapienza University, Italy Founder of La Critica Sociologica Abstract The main contention of this paper is that the eventual decline of ideology would pave the way to personalism and piece-meal policy-making. In this respect, sociology should analyze the process of social evolution while the ideological goals tend to concentrate on the middle-range and distant future. Keywords: ideological utopianism; personalistic leadership; social process; rational analysis. Introduction The relationship between ideology and sociology constitutes a complicated, interesting and, at times, disturbing picture1. Interwoven as they are, they seem to have been fighting each other continuously since the very beginning (in Comte even before Marx): ideology as an act of impatience, the desire to have certainty beyond evidence, and sociology as a careful retrieving of motives and actualities. And yet, they emerge as necessary to each other as the over-all meaningful reaching towards a set of goals and the analysis of how to get there and whether the effort is worth while, as total assertion of values and the permanent casting of a doubt. Three traditional sociological ways of looking at ideology A first, cursory examination can probably detect three traditional sociological ways of looking at ideology: (a) as a cultural system, or system of notions concerning various aspects of social life, whose main function appears to be twofold – of building and perpetuating internal group-cohesion as regards its members, and of insuring a sufficient degree of group-integration with respect to the global structure of society. -

NOTES AND COMMENTARY: Notes onLukacs' Ontology* by Ferenc Feher, Agnes Heller, Gyorgy Markus and Mihaly Vajda Introduction I. When we decided to publish the commentaries written for our friend and teacher Georg Lukacs after reading the last version of his book, On the Ontology of Social Reality, and we reread our "Notes on Lukacs Ontology," it became immediately clear that for various reasons, we would have to write a collective introduction to the text. First—not necessarily in order of importance—to provide a few sketchy comments concerning the work's genesis, which is frequently discussed but scarcely known in its entirety.' At the end of 1961 or the beginning of 1962, i.e., soon after the German manuscript of Volume I of the enormous book, Die Eigenart der Aesthetischen, was finished, Georg Lukacs began a project he had cherished in his young years—his ethics. (We think it right to speak of the realization of youthful plans in his old age. Although former conceptions were changed when he became a Marxist, every reader of the Heidelberg manuscripts will recognize their continuity with later works. Likewise, everyone familiar with Lukacs can see that in this case he was continuing his lectures at the Free School of Human Sciences: the creation of a contemporary radical ethics, although taking into account his "reorientation.") True to his old approach, he mainly consulted primary sources on the subject and took extensive notes. But even during this phase, i.e., in the latter part of 1962, he toyed with the idea of adding a foreword or a lengthy first chapter to his Ethics (in conversations he often gave it the tentative title The Place of Ethics in the System of Human Actions). -
