B, Hunter, Stallions From the President December 31, 2016 WPCSA 2016 Journal During the last few months there was a great deal of discussion about the American National Show. One of the points of controversy was whether or not the show should be rated with the U S Equestrian National Regional and Federation (USEF). Many members felt that rating the show with the USEF would impose too many Shows, Year-End Results restrictions and fees. Recently another discussion about an area hosting a new show produced the reply from a member that they would be willing to come but only if it was not USEF rated. Why bother with the USEF and rating shows with them when we have our own WPCSA shows? There are many reasons but most of our members have no idea why being associated with the USEF is beneficial. The WPCSA has been an affiliate member of the USEF since the 1960’s and is one of it’s earliest affiliates. Equestrian sport is made up of many varied groups but we should all have one goal in mind- promoting and protecting the horse and all things related to it. Joining with other breeds and disciplines gives us a bigger voice concerning the future of equestrian sport. The USEF is designated as the United States National Governing Body (NGB) and as an affiliate we have certain protections afforded us. We have access to their legal counsel and hearing committees of which we have availed ourselves. This alone has saved us a great deal of money. As an affiliate we pay $150 annual dues and in the last year the USEF has given back to us approximately $ 4000. Part of the money returned to us is based on the number of people who join the USEF and mark Welsh as their primary breed or discipline. That’s a pretty good return on an investment! Another perk is the huge year end awards program that recognizes national and regional winners at USEF rated shows. These award winners are promoted to all USEF members as well as Judy and Jay Hubert the general public through print and social media. Many of the breed affiliates have their National Championships live streamed through the USEF Network. However since our National Championship at the Annual Convention is not USEF rated, the likelyihood of that happening is zero. We are one of the few breed affiliates Photo by Patricia Cochran whose National Championship is not rated with them. Recent changes in the top leadership of the USEF should bring changes that will encourage greater participation.     1 The Welsh Pony and Cob Society Minutes of the Annual General Meeting of Members held at Venue Cymru, Llandudno 1 pm on Saturday 7 April 2018 Present The President, Mr Ifor Lloyd and 233 members who signed the attendance registers. In Attendance Sarah Case, MHA Broomfield Alexander and Doreen Walford, taking the minutes. The President welcomed everyone and declared the meeting open. The President noted that the meeting was also being audio-recorded and asked if there were any objections; there were none. He asked if anyone was making their own recording; there were none. He noted the Venue housekeeping matters. Members receiving awards were asked to remain at the close of the AGM for photographs. He asked if there were any objections to non-members attending, representing proxy votes or accepting awards. There were no objections. The President introduced Sarah Case from Broomfield Alexander who would declare the result of the ballot and Doreen Walford, taking shorthand minutes. Obituaries The President noted that a number of members had died during the year and extended the Society’s sympathy to families and friends. He called the meeting to stand for a moment’s silence. 1. Minutes of the Annual General Meeting held on 17 April 2017 The President noted all the pages of the minutes individually and asked if there were any comments: there were none. DALES PONY THE GREAT ALL-ROUNDER Story and photography by Kelly Davidson Dales Ponies were bred in the Yorkshire Dales of England in the 19th and early 20th centuries as pack ponies for the lead industry in the Pennine Mountains. As railways emerged and road systems improved, pack ponies were slowly phased out, but the Dales found a niche on the small farms in and around Yorkshire. With their unusual strength, and sensible natures, they offered great advantages to the small farmer and his family. In the early 1900’s, a Welsh Cob stallion named Comet was crossed to many high quality Dales mares, passing on a more free-moving shoulder and increased athleticism. The resulting stylish ponies, with their famous powerful and eye-catching trot, were unmatched in trotting races and provided a fashionable carriage drive into town for the family.

Copies of Registration papers and/or Lease Agreements, or both, or proof of eligibility to be registered, shall be available for inspection at all Shows, if requested by a Show Committee. Importantly, the newsletter gives you all a quick catch up on the committee, who we all are, and what is happening. I also include information about the Points Award Competition. This competition started in 2019, and due to COVID’19, the rules have changed a little for the coming year.
