What a year! Sadly, not in the good sense. 2020 passed, painfully and slowly. For those of us lucky enough to stay healthy, but stuck at home, memories of being in the film Groundhog Day come to mind! On the more positive side however, it looks like Boris is getting vaccines out to everyone. Hopefully, we will all soon be in a healthier world, and the life which we all enjoy, will be back up and running as normal. This is my first newsletter for the South West Association of the Society. I have tried to fill it with exciting articles and competitions for all ages of our membership to enjoy. Importantly, the newsletter gives you all a quick catch up on the committee, who we all are, and what is happening. I also include information about the Points Award Competition. This competition started in 2019, and due to COVID’19, the rules have changed a little for the coming year. As regards membership fees this year, the committee has agreed that if you were a paid up, subscribed member in 2020, then your 2021 membership is free of charge. This seemed the fairest course of action due to the impact of COVID’19, which meant that last year was a write off for most of us with our . As regards younger members, I am starting a new Young Members page with fun puzzles and brain teasers. It will also include news on SWA young members and their . Unfortunately, last year we had to say goodbye to Brightwells Welsh auctions. To replace them, there are now online auctions, which I have not been brave enough yet to enter! For horse articles in the newsletters, I thought that as conformation is such an important part of our ponies and cobs, I will talk about some conformational issues and faults. This newsletter starts with the front legs. Looking forwards, that lovely time of year is coming, when we are looking for for our mares, or waiting anxiously for the now very wide broodmare to pop out her new edition. There is a list of local breeders included in this edition. Finally, there is a competition which I hope you will all enjoy and enter. I do hope you like reading the newsletter. If anyone has anything they wish to include in a future newsletters, or has an ideas of something to include, I will be happy to receive your ideas. Please do get in touch with your results or just a happy story about your pony or cob with pictures as well. Any feedback, then please do contact me on [email protected] Anna Richards (Secretary) 3 Acting Chairman’s Report Unfortunately our chairman Stewart is having a few health issues, and has asked me to step in until he is better. I’m sure you will join me in wishing him a speedy recovery. Your committee are working to try to provide some events this year. Having heard the Prime Minister give his update today, it looks as though we can hold some shows. Please check our Facebook page for updates. Hopefully life will soon revert to some kind of normal, where we can socialise, and get our horses and ponies out competing. Stay safe everyone Regards from

Membership of SWA 2021 ***IMPORTANT NOTICE*** The coronavirus restrictions in 2020 meant that SWA was unable to hold events and run as normal. As a result, the committee agreed that members had not received value for their subscription last year. It was agreed therefore, that paid up members in 2020 will receive free membership for 2021. Anna Richards is now the Secretary in charge of membership. It is requested that all new members and those entitled to free membership fill out a membership form (see end of newsletter), and send it to Anna at The Old Chapel, Church Close, Aylesbeare, Exeter, Devon. Shoestring Equestrian includes SWA members; mum - Caroline Wilkins and her three girls Skyla Clements, Elsie Wilkins and Jessica Wilkins. The three each have ponies : Peasedown Luigi aka Luigi, a Welsh Section C, Torcoed Kalon-Lan aka Marmite, a black Welsh Section A, and last but by no means least, Flaming Katie aka Bambi, an Appaloosa Welsh Part Bred. Shoestring Equestrian are kindly sponsored by The Equestrian Box (www.theequestrianbox.co.uk) for 2021. The three girls have been positive and productive throughout lockdown to ensure they are ready for when the restrictions are lifted. They are eagerly looking forward to getting out again and have ensured their three ponies are fit and prepared for competitions. Luigi, once produced by Jessica Talbot, arrived at Shoestring equestrian in July 2020. Skyla who is Luigi’s pilot, had to move on from her successful Welsh Section B Marons Romeo, due to a sudden growth spurt. Skyla has been training with Luigi for arena . Their first event at Chard Equestrian in the 80cm class was successful. They took the top spot and came 1st. 9 Elise rides Marmite. They went to their first pony club camps together and attended a WH Clinic at Badgworth between lockdowns. Finally, Jessica rides Bambi. She has been competing in the BD Quest competitions and qualified for the BD Quest SW Regional, finishing 2nd with her team in the under 21’s. During this lockdown, the girls have been dedicated to their ponies. They ride them six days a week, usually hacking, doing hillwork and a little online dressage to keep them all tiptop and happy. Once lockdown ends, they intend to get back competing. The girls have already decided what their aims are for 2021. Skyla wants to make her dreams come true , and wants to qualify Luigi for HOYS in the Junior Riddens or WHP classes. Elsie intends to continue doing Lead Rein classes, but would like to start moving on to first ridden and is already practicing hard. Jessica wants to keep gaining her confidence and partnership with Bambi. Mum, Caroline will no doubt be working hard to keep it all going and, on the side-line, watching and encouraging her three girls. 10 End of an Era Goodbye

It is with great sadness to most horsey people that Brightwells no longer run any equine sales. This affects many people and breeders, not just the Welsh members who used and enjoyed WPCS sales at Builth and Hereford. Brightwells also ran the Sales at Addington, Shetland Sales, Bloodstock Sales and many more Equine sales. For the WPCS they ran the Spring Sale, Hay-on-Wye, Fayre Oaks and the Autumn Cob Sale. These events were a significant part of the WPCS yearly calendar. Welsh Pony & Cob enthusiasts came from all over the world to buy, view or sell at these often-exciting auctions.

• Breeders put in their own stock as an advert for their stud the following year.

• Producers and dealers came to buy a project or for an owner.

• Families turned up to buy youngsters or ridden ponies.

• People caught up with friends for the social part of the event.

The highlight of the sales was the evenings Highflyers Sale or the Autumn Cob Sale’s Evening Gala where top-class ponies or cobs were auctioned. The atmosphere was one of expectation and excitement, and people would book their formal dinner with friends and enjoy the spectacle. 11

Highest priced selling Welsh Pony or Cob Welsh Section C Stallion Tyrllawn Rolls -Royce selling for £45,000 The tender of the recent WPCS sales was taken over by Farmers Mart (R G Jones) Ltd. On their website they say they are “very pleased to have won the tender and to be appointed as the official online auctioneers for the Welsh Pony & Cob Society in such a competitive period. We look forward to offering some of the World’s best Welsh breeding and performance stock online to an appreciative audience.” The WPCS have run two sales organised by Farmers Mart Ltd. Five official WPCS online sales have taken place with one specifically concentrating on the sale of foals. Bidding opened three days before the sale date. These are not a ‘live feed sale with an auctioneer’s voice’ but a timed ending sale, with an estimated set end time for each lot. Lots will be sold in catalogue order. However, on the 22nd January 2021 the WPCS again advertised the tender of the Official Festival of Welsh Ponies, Cobs and their Part-breds to be held annually each Autumn. They state the current online auctions are to run observing COVID-19 restrictions. So, watch this space! We might all be back up at Builth enjoying the freezing cold temperatures and mixture of fine ponies and cobs. Have any SWA WPCS Members sold through the online sales? If you have please can we hear about your experience? Contact Anna at [email protected] 12 Conformational Faults – The Front Leg Conformational faults to front legs have more affects on a horse’s future than hind leg conformational faults. This is because they are subject to more concussion and stress. An average horse carries 58 percent of its weight on its front legs. It is also affecting the horse’s main part of its body because of how it attaches to its front legs. A horse has no collarbone like humans, so it has no skeletal connection between its legs and its rib cage. Instead, it has strong muscles, ligaments and fascia which are called the Thoracic Sling or Shoulder Girdle. From the Sling or Girdle the chest is suspended between the horse’s two front limbs and lifts the chest. As a result of this skeletal structure for a horse, any front limb conformational fault is going to affect the muscle that holds its entire body up in line with its back end. How the front end of your horse should look in pictures.

Here are some common faults- what they are called, what they look like and the explanation and cause of the fault.

19 Breeding Season Is Upon Us…

It’s, coming to that time of year , when all those breeders or aspiring breeders out there, are looking for a nice stallion to cover their mare to. There are many factors which go into picking that stallion. Some people take certain factors as more important than others. Such examples of these factors are:

 Pedigree

 Conformation

 Results/form

 Progeny

 Colour

 Markings

 Movement

 Character

 Breed type Breeding has come on so far in the last decade with the availability of AI, DNA testing and Grading. Artificial Insemination, is expensive. It can allow you to have a foal from a stallion that is some distance away, with the potential to have sexed semen or ICSI (Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection) More and more studs are having straws taken from their stallions, so they can still compete them during the breeding season or are less likely to get damaged by mares running with them. Cadlan Valley Buzby, the prolific Welsh Section B Stallion, has had semen sent all the way to Australia. That would be an expensive way of having a foal if you had to send your mare from Australia. 20 ICSI is where the sperm is injected into the mare’s egg. However, with ICSI the mare must go away to have the eggs removed, and then the sperm can be injected into the egg. For a large stud, this might be cost effective as one straw of sperm can be used on several eggs, meaning it can fertilise many mares. For small time breeders this might be too costly and not so beneficial. The use of DNA testing has become especially useful to breeding. With such DNA tests as colour coat testing, DNA profiling, genetic disorder identification or coat colour definition, DNA testing has far reaching implications in the breeding world. People can use these tests when advertising their stallion to illustrate his dominant genes and hence will be likely to breed a certain colour or conformation and/or that there will be no genetic disorder. Grading in the UK is not as big a deal as it is in Europe. All the same, it is a big part of the stallion’s success in proving that they are right for breeding. Now we have left the EU it is more than likely that we will have to grade our stallions and breeding mares. It will be interesting to see how this develops within the UK over the next few years.
