The Penn-Marydel Welsh Pony & Cob Society show was held June 11th & 12th, 2016. Penn-Marydel celebrated its 30th anniversary by hosting the Welsh Pony & Cob Society Eastern Regional Show. The last 28 years have been at the Harford County Equestrian Center in Bel Air MD. We reached our goal of 100 ponies, so our competitors will receive quadruple points for this show. Many thanks to all who brought extra ponies, so this could happen. We are so grateful to them for all their efforts. We tried to make our 30th anniversary special for our competitors. Penn-Marydel Hats were given out. Lunch on Saturday was catered by Lou of Capital Concessions. Lou made a wonderful Mexican Fiesta including tacos and chips along with some salads - ice tea and lemonade and some brownies and cookies for desert. The Fiesta and the food were a hit with the crowd. Lunch was open from 11:30 until 1:30. People could stop when they had a break between classes, cool off and take a break before heading back to the ring. Again this year, we did our popular door prizes - just a little some- thing to say thank you for all the years of support from the competi- tors and sponsors. These gifts ranged from a foot massager to a horse Rollingwoods All Mine LOM - Double Supreme sculpture, pony sheets to saddle pads, and a jacket to Walmart gift cards. We had a wide variety of items donated by sponsors and friends. Shawn Bigley went above and beyond making neck sashes for the Supreme Champions and Childs First Pony and I think an- other one or two other classes or divisions that I have forgotten. She also designed and made almost 80 the treat jars that were given away throughout the 2 days. We are blessed 1000 times over to have Shawn and her many talents so close. Our judges for the show were Mr. Michael Elmore from Abiquiu, New Mexico and Mr. Gerald Verkuyl of Herald, California. It was a bit warm and humid on Saturday for the unrated USEF classes and the breed classes. The lovely Section B mare, Roll- ingswoods All Mine owned by Rollingswoods Farm of Olive Branch MS, was the Supreme Breed Champion under both judges. Mr. Elmore pinned LLanarth Royalty the imported Sec- tion B Stallion owned by Leanne Krick of Stewartstown PA as Reserve Supreme and Mr. Verkuyl pinned Balsuma Lady Lib- erty, the beautiful bay Section C Mare, owned by Alan and Suzy Schockett of Dighton MA. Madyn Starman - Double Supreme Gelding Supreme Gelding, under both judges, was Madyn Starman owned by Connie Moore - a wonderful Section A gelding from Arrow OK . Reserve under Mr. Elmore was Annalisa Ferrotta’s Clarwood Gentle- man Jim, the handsome, chestnut section B gelding from Bronx NY and under Mr. Verkuyl the Reserve Supreme Geldings was Kristine Nowell’s Rock Island Rhythm a very cute palomino section B geld- ing from Westport MA. The weather made a turn to cooler temperatures on Sunday. And the wind picked up. We made it through all the jumping divisions before the gale force winds came through and knocked all the jumps down. How lucky we were to have finished the jumping before that hap- pened. All in All it was a great show for our 30th year. The 2016 WPCSA Western Regional turned out to be one of the best shows the Welsh Pony & Cob Association of Califor- nia has been able to put together for the past several years! There were several keys to the success of the show. First of all www.herebeponies.com – thanks to everyone who helped to gather 100 ponies! It wasn’t just one family, or two – it was the result of all the people who came to the show to make it happen. Whether you brought one, two ponies or a few trailers full, thanks to everyone who participated in the show! As a result, we met the goal to achieve quadruple points. Here-Be Dragons Farm was proud to have 3 Welsh Cob Ponies Secondly – thanks to the weather man and all the staff, volunteers and participants for making this a FUN show. at the National Dressage Pony Cup at the Kentucky Horse Park Primarily, it’s up to the people who come to make that happen. Thanks to show secretary Jen Sommer, Manda Ley our ring commander, and Donna Ley our TD for helping make the show run smoothly. We were very fortunate to have pleas- ant weather, and this truly helped how all of us felt at the show. It was evident that people wanted to have fun – and they did! We had a great pizza/swim party Saturday afternoon, thanks to Goldhills Welsh for the pizza, and to Heather and Chuck Anders for serving as “Life Guards” while the kids played. The costume class was a huge success, giving the rest of us a real treat! WPCAC offered a free dinner to all exhibi- tors, the Maurers’ Gaslight Farm provided a tri-tip dinner as the center- piece of the exhibitor pot luck for a very yummy and fun dinner. Finally - A huge thank you to the sponsors and judges. A special “thank you” to BAC Community Bank of Stockton, CA, for a large financial donation in addition to “goodie bags”, the printing of Show Programs, and some extra goodies for the bags. Whether the donations were $10, $100, or more, each dollar helped the show in Goldhills Hot Mocha many ways – thus the success that we felt it was. And most especially, Double Res. Supreme Champion “thank you” to our judges. Unless we’ve been in their shoes (and most of us haven’t), we really have no idea what a big job this is. It was a pleasure to meet and work with judges Margaret Edwards and her daughter, Becca, from Nefydd Stud as well as Shawn Bigley from Maryland. Congratulations to all the participants and all the winners. Both judges selected section B Stallion Clanfair Signature as Supreme Champion. Both judges also agreed on their Reserve Supreme Champion, Section D Mare, Goldhills Hot Mocha. Both judges selected Vintage Oak Top Model as the Grand Champion half-Welsh. Reserve Grand Champion half-Welsh honors were given to Fallbrook’s Night Shadow (judge Edwards) and Lazy J Bailef’s Cowboy (judge Bigley). Written as a series, and published yearly in the WPCSA Journal, the purpose is to give accurate informa- tion about the “state of the breed” regarding the breeders and animals most active in managing this aspect of Welsh ponies and cobs in the U.S. Thank you to Gail Thomson for her many years of tracking this data and the thousands of hours she has put in gathering this data. This year’s installment is a bit different, comparing the trends over the five years 2011 – 2015.

When analyzing most trends all U.S. bred animals will be the population used with those born in other countries not rep- resented. When “total registrations” are the basis all animals registered in the given year will be included without regard to their country of origin. Emphasis is definitely on the animals bred recently in the U.S., the stallions and mares involved and the breeders making the decisions. Volume refers to the stud book volume the ponies and cobs are registered in.

Total registrations dropped dramatically between 2011 with 430 to 2015 with just 226 animals registered. In each year, the Section B registrations are higher than the other three sections combined. It should be noted that the registration fee amnesty was in place during 2014, so the number of animals registered during that year jumped up above the declining 51 trend line. Imported ponies registered decreased from 34 in 2011 to 12 in 2015. 2014 saw an increase in imports after two “Large” Breeders Section Vol 63 Vol 62 Vol 61 Vol 60 Vol 59 very low years with just 8 in 2012 and 12 in 2013. Imports are primarily from the UK, with 43 animals imported over 5 2015 2014 2013 2012 2011 years. Foals produced by Clanfair Signature B 6 10 small breedes account for 70%-88% of foals registered per year. Only the “Clanfair” and *Deoniath Fly Boy D 6 Evans prefixes (both from Oregon) and the Shenandoah/Farnley prefix (Virginia) appear on the list in four or more years. In the Central and East regions the south has more breeders producing ponies The use of imported stallions is somewhat inconsistent in the Section B ponies. There were a total of 278 Section A foals registered during these three years, so about 20% were sired by imported *Mynach Master Class 3 1 stallions.
