The Village of Hawthorn Woods holds a rich heritage of tradition, founded by a sense of community. In the 1700’s, French explorers arrived in the area. At the time, the area was home to the Potawatami Indians. The friendly and helpful Potawatami welcomed and assisted the new settlers in adapting to the environment. In 1839, Lake County was created by the Illinois State Legislature. The beautiful Village of Hawthorn Woods was incorporated into Lake County in 1958.
Today, the Village of Hawthorn Woods is predominately residential, with more than 2,300 homes spread over 5.4 miles. The Village strives to preserve a sense of community with a quaint atmosphere, open space and the rural character that brought the first settlers here long ago. There are three outstanding school districts, as well as several private schools, that service the area to provide a superior educational experience.
The Hawthorn Woods Women’s Club is a strong philanthropic organization, supporting the entire community. The Women’s Club donates to multiple charities, plans holiday events, holds auctions, and is open to all area women to network socially and professionally.
Hawthorn Woods and its surrounding areas offer irresistible opportunities that present a unique quality of life. There are nine community parks within the village with over 80 acres offering nature trails, playgrounds, basketball courts, tennis courts, fishing, sledding, soccer, softball, and picnic areas. Metra transportation service is available, and O’Hare airport is conveniently located approximately 40 minutes away. Downtown Chicago is only 50 minutes southeast of Hawthorn Woods. There are multiple fine dining and shopping spots in the surrounding area. Deer Park Town Center and Westfield Shoppingtown are within 15 minutes, and Woodfield Mall is only 25 minutes from the village.
