Creating a Soccer Strategy for Northern Ireland
CREATING A SOCCER STRATEGY FOR NORTHERN IRELAND Report from the Advisory Panel to the Minister for Culture, Arts and Leisure CREATING A SOCCER STRATEGY FOR NORTHERN IRELAND Report from the Advisory Panel to the Minister for Culture, Arts and Leisure 3 4 FOREWORD In October 2000, Michael McGimpsey MLA, Minister of Culture, Arts and Leisure, established an Advisory Panel to help guide the development of a strategy for tackling the problems facing local football. I was very pleased to accept the role of chairing the Panel. A considerable amount of work and effort has been given by the Panel over the last twelve months in responding to the task set by the Minister. The detail of the Panel’s input is set out elsewhere in this report. I should like to take this opportunity to place on record my personal thanks to the other Panel members for their contribution, particularly in terms of the huge amount of time they have given freely to the process. At all times – afternoons, evenings, weekends and even a beautiful Sunday afternoon in June – we believed that we were working towards one goal, the betterment of football in Northern Ireland. I should also like to thank the DCAL officials who supported the Panel’s work. No one individual or organisation owns football. Football belongs to the people, and through this process we hope we have engaged with the people and taken account of their views in this report. In many ways this is their report. The Advisory Panel is sincerely grateful to everyone who contributed throughout the process and hopes that those concerned have been suitably acknowledged at Appendix II. -

Victory a must tonight Our European visitors tonight, Legia Warsaw, were very much an unknown quantity when the second round draw of the Cup-Winners' Cup was made. So, over the past few days, we have all been doing our homework on our Polish guests. Jocky Scott didn't have much luck when he first tried to visit Poland to have a look at them, because their Embassy in London couldn't get a necessary visa through quickly enough for us. Then games were postponed to allow the Poles to prepare for last week's international against England at Wembley. Jocky did, however, manage to assess Warsaw on Sunday when he took in their game agaist Lodz, so we now know all about their current form. In fact, it was a hectic spell for Jocky, as he was also in Bucharest last Wednesday taking in Romania's game against Bulgaria for Andy Roxburgh. Right now, though, it's Warsaw who concern us. To get a general feel of the Alex Smith Polish style we also had Drew Jarvie in London lastweek. Drew was at White Hart Lane on Tuesday for the under Switzerland. I know he will be able to come straight in 21 clash and the following night he was among the and handle this situation. Wembley crowd for the senior international. Legia Beating Hearts by 3-0 on Saturday was a lovely boost for Warsaw had one player, Kosecki, in the line up which lost us. The performance came at exactly the right time. Not to England. And they also had another two on the bench. -
The New Executive Committee Professional Football Strategy
3.07 The new Executive Committee 03 Professional Football Strategy Forum 06 53rd UEFA member association 07 Referees train in Rome 11 No 59 – March 2007 No 58 – Février 2007 59 March Message Photos: UEFA-pjwoods.ch of the president The role of a coach Although my election as president of UEFA in some ways stirred up the same emotions as I experienced when I won major trophies as a player, my new role is more that of a coach, in the true sense of the word. My aim is to convince the leaders of European football to share my vision of football. It has been said that my vision of football is romantic or idealistic, but I believe that, in the long term, it is the right way to ensure the survival of our game and maintain its extraordinary popularity. We should not be seeking instant reward and selling our “products” to the highest bidder, but making sure that our competitions have as wide an appeal as possible and doing everything we can to ensure that they are attractive both in terms of the quality of play and results that are not a foregone conclusion. Of course, football needs money. It needs it to improve the education of coaches and, through them, the skill of players. It needs money to improve its facilities, to offer players the best possible conditions and spectators a safe and comfortable environment. It also needs money to develop grassroots football and to fulfil its social responsibilities by contributing to youth education. IN THIS ISSUE On the other hand, football has no use for profiteers, for people who, seeing how successful football is as a business, get involved for their own personal gain. -
