In Mexico, the inventory of the group began in the 1930s. After 70 yr of taxonomic research, 503 species in 312 genera have been reported in approximately 440 of the 4,697 species of vertebrates known to occur in the country. Of these 503 digenean species, 153 are endemic or at least have been recorded only within Mexican territory. Most of these species have been described as parasites of fishes, both freshwater and marine. The overall size of the fauna was estimated in 2 ways, based on available information. Between 5,300 and 8,000 species of digeneans in Mexican vertebrates is estimated, representing 8-10% of the world's digenean fauna; >77,000 digenean species are estimated worldwide. Digeneans, because of their prevalence and abundance in nature and their complex life cycles, are one of the most important groups of parasites to be considered in managing biodiversity, in conservation, and as indicators for ecosystem monitoring. Chilika also has a long history of its floral and faunal studies which begun since more than a century ago.

Email: [email protected] Phone: +234(0)8026212686 Abstract This study reviews the effects of parasites of fresh water fish hosts. Like other living organisms, fish harbour parasites either external or internal which cause a host of pathological debilities in them. The parasites live in close obligate association and derive benefits such as nutrition at the host’s expense, usually without killing the host. They utililize energy otherwise available for the hosts growth, sustenance, development, establishment and reproduction and as such may harm their hosts in a number of ways and affect fish production. The common parasites of fishes include the unicellular microparasites (viruses, bacteria, fungi and protozoans). The protozoans i.e. microsporidians and mixozoans are considered in this review. The multicellular macroparasites mainly comprised of the helminthes and arthropods are also highlighted. The effects of parasites on their fish hosts maybe exacerbated by different pollutants including heavy metals and hydrocarbons, organic enrichment of sediments by domestic sewage and others such as parasite life cycles and fish population size. Turbellarian research was largely ignored in Australia, apart from some early interest at the turn of the 19th century. The modern study of this mostly free-living branch of the phylum Platyhelminthes was led by Lester R.G. Cannon of the Queensland Museum. A background to the study of turbellarians is given particularly as it relates to the efforts of Cannon on symbiotic fauna, and his encouragement of visiting specialists and students.
