Para Giovanni e Artur. 2 Agradecimentos Em Janeiro de 2014, após uma análise do cenário brasileiro no ano de Copa do Mundo e de governo da Presidente Dilma Roussef, percebi que o Brasil passaria por momentos muito desafiadores, porque ousara mexer nas estruturas arcaicas de poder. A luta das classes sociais brasileiras seria acirrada e penderia para o retrocesso político, económico e social. Nesse momento, decidimos alterar a estratégia da nossa história particular: mudar de país. Escolhemos três países prioritários que poderiam nos receber: a Itália, por ser a nossa segunda pátria, França e Inglaterra. Após uma rápida análise dos cenários económicos e políticos destes países percebemos que não seriam as melhores escolhas. Portugal, ao fazermos os comparativos de alguns países europeus devidos na construção de cenários, recorrentemente aparecia em indicadores por nós considerados importantes. E escolhemos Portugal como nosso próximo país de moradia. Com este preâmbulo quero expressar o meu agradecimento e confiança neste país, e nesta cidade, que tão bem nos acolheu. Agradeço à Universidade Autónoma de Lisboa, por ser partícipe direta e inequívoca desta escolha ao facultar-me o acesso a uma bolsa de estudos e por uma acolhida generosa de seus professores, notadamente Professores Armando Carvalho Homem, Miguel Figueira de Faria, José Amado Mendes. Artur, filho querido, é um privilégio ser sua mãe, neste tempo. 4 Resumo Em 1836 a editora John Murray publica o primeiro Handbook for Traveller on the Continent antecipando-se, em um ano, a ascensão da Rainha Vitória ao trono inglês. Assume-se, a partir de então, como organizador e condutor das narrativas comparativistas de progresso, do desenvolvimento e da modernidade, do império, por meio do inglês que viaja. Estabelece a série guionista que desenvolverá narrativas imperiais para os espaços urbanos em quase todos os continentes, exceto América do Sul. Nossa investigação apresenta uma análise do início do turismo organizado e serial tendo por objeto, e fontes privilegiadas, as publicações do Handbook for Travellers in Portugal. Section. Lisbon, entre 1855 e 1887. A série, em cinco edições, representa o olhar expressivo de poder “brando”, cultural e ideológico, do império britânico sobre a cidade de Lisboa, ao estabelecer o que é digno para o viajante inglês. A pesquisa contribui, de maneira pioneira em língua portuguesa, para o reconhecimento de personagens importantes para a história do turismo e para análise crítica do guia de viagem moderno. A investigação, para tal, apoia-se nas fontes quantitativas e qualitativas do Arquivo John Murray (Biblioteca Nacional da Escócia). Palavras-chaves: Lisboa, viagens século XIX, Murray’s Handbook, turismo, Karl Baedeker. 5 Abstract In 1836 John Murray III published the first “Handbook for Travellers on the Continent”, anticipating, in one year, the rise of Queen Victoria to the English throne. The guidebook is as organizer and conductor of the narratives of progress and modernity for the English travellers. Since then, it has established the imperial narratives from urban spaces on almost all continents, except Latin America. The investigation presents a critical analysis of the beginning of organized serial tourism. The series “Handbook for Travellers in Portugal. Section I: Lisbon”, published between 1855 and 1887, represent the expressive gaze, cultural and ideological power, of the British empire over the city of Lisbon. The research contributes, in a pioneering way in the Portuguese language, to the recognition of characters in the history of tourism and to a critical analysis of the modern travel guide. The investigation is supported by the Murray Archives sources (National Library of Scotland). The materials for such a work are superabundant, as they were in the case of my Grandfather's life. For over ten years I was engaged in collecting and arranging the correspondence before handing it over to Dr Smiles, but this had to be done in leisure hours, and for many years past such leisure hours have been denied me. With a view to keeping my Father's memory alive before the generation which knew him passes away, I wrote an article which Dr Prothero kindly accepted and published in the 'Quarterly Review.' It has brought me such a large number of gratifying letters, both from friends and strangers ; from those who knew him and those who did not, that I have been persuaded to re- publish it in the somewhat more permanent form of this small volume. I have included several passages which, owing to limits of space, had to be omitted from the ' Quarterly,' and have added my Father's own account of the origin of the Handbooks, and a few extracts from his letters home from 1830 vi PREFACE to 1884, as they will give the reader some idea of the zeal and intelligence which he imported into his travels, and which enabled him to become the Pioneer of Guide Book writers. I have to thank my brother Hallam and my sisters for their assistance in furnishing me with various details and copies of letters.

British and German Textbook Publishers: A Guide to Archive Collections 3 Introduction Lars Müller Historic research is predominantly dependent upon access to source materials. The archives of textbook publishers contain material that has great potential for innovative new studies, but research in this area is hindered by a lack of access to these sources and by their great disparity. This archive guide aims to redress this situation. It provides brief information about existing archive collections and can act as a starting point for locating source material. In addition it represents the hope that the increasing interest in archive-based research into textbooks and educational materials will stimulate new research. Existing studies using archive material from textbook publishers have tended to focus on individual publishing houses meaning that international comparative analyses are a significant desideratum of research in this field. This archive guide primarily provides information about German and British textbook publishers. Defining which publishing houses fall into those categories is complicated by two main factors. The first of these is that many publishing houses were, and still are, international companies producing textbooks for diverse countries and regions; either through subsidiaries or agreements with local publishers.

Bristow, Co-Chair This study explores the development of British tourist guidebooks that became increasingly interested Continental Catholicism, its people, and its art and architecture over the course of the nineteenth century. The eighteenth-century Grand Tour, long the domain of young aristocrats, had been a secular pilgrimage to Rome and the capstone to a traditional Classical Oxbridge education. After the wars with France ended in 1815, however, transformations in transportation made Continental Europe accessible to middle-class British tourists. As this fresh generation of travelers went abroad, they cared less about Classical history and more about Roman Catholic cultural artefacts and practices. The dissertation shows that British tourist guidebooks, which frequently Orientalized their Catholic subject matter, became central to consolidating a specific British, Protestant identity from the 1810s onward. ii The dissertation of Alexandra Lauren Milsom is approved.

Ford On a Sunday morning, shortly before our sabbatical year in Salamanca came to an end, a drawing appeared in the local history section of our newspaper, El Adelanto. It was entitled "La Salamanca de Richard Ford," and was accompanied by a brief account of Ford's travels in Spain, 1830-1833. I clipped the sketch, and packed it to ship home with other mementos. One rainy day six months later, I decided to satisfy my curiosity about Richard Ford. Who was he, and what was he doing in Salamanca? Starting with the DNB, and progressing through the various national library catalogs, I became fascinated, and craved more information.

Barnes Authors, Publishers and Politicians The quest for an Anglo-American copyright agreement was repeatedly thwarted through­ out most of the nineteenth century, due to the effect of lobbyists and influence-peddlars on the American Congress. This meant that in the United States the question of international copyright was not decided on its own merits but rather by pressure groups who wielded great financial and private power upon the legislators. The opposite was true in Great Britain, where Parliament was far more interested in the rights of authors and publishers and had already passed a number of statutes promoting international copyright. Copyright agree­ ments, however, needed to be mutually agreed upon by both countries, and the United States would not reciprocate. In desperation, a group of British authors and publishers decided to play the game of politics American-style, and with great caution they raised enough money to defray the expenses of a secret lobby in Washington. A copyright treaty was duly signed by the Secretary of State and all that was required was Senate approval. Authors, Publishers and Politicians describes these efforts to secure an Anglo-American copyright agreement. It explores the under­ lying causes of the failure of this quest, a failure which enabled literary pirates on both sides of the Atlantic to continue operations for a further forty years. It traces the effects this had on the writers and producers of books as well as their reading public. Few aspects of Anglo-American relations were untouched by the drama presented in this study.

Bristow, Co-Chair This study explores the development of British tourist guidebooks that became increasingly interested Continental Catholicism, its people, and its art and architecture over the course of the nineteenth century. The eighteenth-century Grand Tour, long the domain of young aristocrats, had been a secular pilgrimage to Rome and the capstone to a traditional Classical Oxbridge education. After the wars with France ended in 1815, however, transformations in transportation made Continental Europe accessible to middle-class British tourists. As this fresh generation of travelers went abroad, they cared less about Classical history and more about Roman Catholic cultural artefacts and practices. The dissertation shows that British tourist guidebooks, which frequently Orientalized their Catholic subject matter, became central to consolidating a specific British, Protestant identity from the 1810s onward. ii The dissertation of Alexandra Lauren Milsom is approved.
