Gryphon Books Ltd. was incorporated 28 May 1948 as a wholly owned subsidiary company of John Murray Limited. It was formed to take advantage of post-war paper rationing on publishers. Notable authors under the Gryphon imprint included Francis Bonnamy, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, Bryn Jordan, Osbert Lancaster and Percival Christopher Wren. No new titles were published after 1953 but the ledgers continue until 1979 to deal with the remaining stock.
