Once An Applemen, Always An Applemen October 6 Cider Press Sports October 7 Cider Press Sports Fall sports ready for big things by Breanna Howard If you go to Musselman, you know that within the last few years Musselman High School has had very successful athletic teams. With our team being back to back state champs and state runner up, football making it into the playoffs last season, cheerlead- ing, , and basketball all with state championship appearances, the expectations for Musselman athletics are high. Fall sports coaches have high expectations for continued success. Mr. Martz, varsity volleyball coach, said he’s looking for “the team to work extremely hard both physically and mentally and find a way to get better daily.” He said the team has had some minor setbacks such as in- juries, but it’s still a work in progress. Despite the recent hardships, Coach Martz and his players are keeping faith. “I firmly believe we will be back in the state tournament. The question will be how much can we improve throughout the rest of the season to give us the op- portunity to advance as far as we want to in that tournament?” Mr. Thomas, varsity football coach, said his expectations this season are to get better every day and make the playoffs. Thomas indicated many athletes have really surprised him this year, including Nate Arndt and Jake Rife because they have really stepped up this season. Thomas said, “What I love most about this team would have to be how much of a family they are. And if I had to describe them in one word it would be FLEAT, even though that’s actually 5 words.” Coach Robinson, varsity coach, said, “My expec- tations for this year are a state appearance and regional champions.” She said her favorite part about her team is their competitive nature. “I see them making it to states. Most of them are seniors and have already been there and gotten the experience. Also, with being so close last year I am 100% sure they want to go back! I think as long as they work hard and not give up on each other, we will be back in Charleston!” Mr. Rizer, varsity XC coach, said their main goal is to always work to get better. His expectations this year are for his athletes to win Berkeley County Championships and BEAT JEFFERSON! Rizer explained that “Injuries have hampered a bit, but it’s not an excuse.” Rizer also described his team as family. From the optimistic tone of the coaches, Musselman sports teams are gearing up for successful seasons. Hopefully all the hard work will pay off and they will all get that trip to Charleston!
