If you want happiness for a lifetime, Help someone in need” I have witnessed my mother following what she said, and surrounded by the happiness. I also witnessed my father and elder brother working hard and leading a selfless life and happy with what they had. With that Inspiration from my family, I always dreamed about doing something to the needy children when I grow as an adult. I turned my childhood dream into reality when I was 29 years old by starting “Bighelp For Education” in the year 2002 with the help of my friends. In August 2002 I visited India and visited several public schools, talked to many teachers and children to understand their needs and issues. That visit had really helped me deep dive into the public education system in India, and recognize the challenges and struggles with many issues related to enrolment, retention and quality of education in public schools. So I decided to make Bighelp organization as catalyst to address these issues and introduced the programs ‘Sponsor A Child’, Adopt A School and Merit awards. Sponsor a Child program helps to address the issues related to enrolment and retention. Adopt a school and Merit awards programs help to address the issues related to quality of education in public schools. In August 2002, during my visit to India, I formed the first volunteer team in Nagarjuna Sagar, comprising of teachers philanthropists to run the local project for Bighelp. Initially 20 students have been sponsored, 2 schools were adopted and 2 merit awards were setup under the first project. An office was setup in Hyderabad to manage projects and expand Bighelp activities. Mrs. Sarojini Maturi & Mr. Jawahar Rambarki have joined their hands as volunteers in India and took up the roles as Executive Director and Assistant executive director for Projects, respectively. In 2004, Mr. Seshagiri Rao, A retired engineer, has joined as a volunteer in India and assumed the role of Assistant Executive Director for Administration. I am proud to say these 3 individuals continue to serve Bighelp organization till today as volunteers and continue to contribute endless hours of time and energy. My friends and family supported me at every stage of Bighelp. Without support from my all of my friends and my wife Hameeda, I could have not done anything. My kids are obsessed with Bighelp and always look for opportunities to participate in Bighelp’s activities. My friends and volunteers are the heart of Bighelp. They stand with me to run this organization and reach many underprivileged children in need. -Chand Pasha Shaik, Founder, Bighelp For Education Program List Continued… Sr# Item Name/Type/Lead Description Participant Names 24 Jayashree Rajamani (Guru of Bharatanatyam classical Bharathakalai School of Dance) Kautvam Kautvam item on Mahishasura Akshitha Ramachandran - Classical Dance Mardini choreographed by Audreela Deb - Vasanthi Mannava world renowned classical Shabina Wigneswaran dancer Rama Vaidyanathan Erica Pandey Vennela Mannava 25 Grafton Rocking stars dancing Joshika Selvaraj, Meera Parthasarathy Creative performance from movie for Hit Film song from Indian Manisha Mathavan, Neha Perumal songs from India language with creative props Arjun Ramesh, Rohan Ramesh - Film Dance and ideas. • Clare M. Wilkinson-Weber
Clare M. Wilkinson-Weber TAILORING EXPECTATIONS How film costumes become the audience’s clothes ‘Bollywood’ film costume has inspired clothing trends for many years. Female consumers have managed their relation to film costume through negotiations with their tailor as to how film outfits can be modified. These efforts have coincided with, and reinforced, a semiotic of female film costume where eroticized Indian clothing, and most forms of western clothing set the vamp apart from the heroine. Since the late 1980s, consumer capitalism in India has flourished, as have films that combine the display of material excess with conservative moral values. New film costume designers, well connected to the fashion industry, dress heroines in lavish Indian outfits and western clothes; what had previously symbolized the excessive and immoral expression of modernity has become an acceptable marker of global cosmopolitanism. Material scarcity made earlier excessive costume display difficult to achieve. The altered meaning of women’s costume in film corresponds with the availability of ready-to-wear clothing, and the desire and ability of costume designers to intervene in fashion retailing. Most recently, as the volume and diversity of commoditised clothing increases, designers find that sartorial choices ‘‘on the street’’ can inspire them, as they in turn continue to shape consumer choice. Introduction Film’s ability to stimulate consumption (responding to, and further stimulating certain kinds of commodity production) has been amply explored in the case of Hollywood (Eckert, 1990; Stacey, 1994). That the pleasures associated with film going have influenced consumption in India is also true; the impact of film on various fashion trends is recognized by scholars (Dwyer and Patel, 2002, pp.

Kervan – International Journal of Afro-Asiatic Studies n. 21 (2017) Item Girls and Objects of Dreams: Why Indian Censors Agree to Bold Scenes in Bollywood Films Tatiana Szurlej The article presents the social background, which helped Bollywood film industry to develop the so-called “item numbers”, replace them by “dream sequences”, and come back to the “item number” formula again. The songs performed by the film vamp or the character, who takes no part in the story, the musical interludes, which replaced the first way to show on the screen all elements which are theoretically banned, and the guest appearances of film stars on the screen are a very clever ways to fight all the prohibitions imposed by Indian censors. Censors found that film censorship was necessary, because the film as a medium is much more popular than literature or theater, and therefore has an impact on all people. Indeed, the viewers perceive the screen story as the world around them, so it becomes easy for them to accept the screen reality and move it to everyday life. That’s why the movie, despite the fact that even the very process of its creation is much more conventional than, for example, the theater performance, seems to be much more “real” to the audience than any story shown on the stage. Therefore, despite the fact that one of the most dangerous elements on which Indian censorship seems to be extremely sensitive is eroticism, this is also the most desired part of cinema. Moreover, filmmakers, who are tightly constrained, need at the same time to provide pleasure to the audience to get the invested money back, so they invented various tricks by which they manage to bypass censorship.

Woman Becomes Goddess in Bollywood: Justice, Violence, and the Feminine in Popular Hindi Film Abstract What happens “when a woman becomes Chandika?” This essay contributes to an on-going discussion of the theme of “avenging women” in popular Indian cinema, with particular focus on the transformation of a woman into a fierce Goddess who avenges oppression and re-establishes justice. Analysis of the story line and selected song sequences from the Hindi language film Anjaam (“Outcome,” 1994) in light of themes from the Hindu Sanskrit text, the Devi-Mahatmya (“Greatness of the Goddess,” 5thc. C.E.) shows how traditional religious images and values are adapted and transformed in a modern context. Keywords Goddess, Bollywood, Indian cinema, Devi-Mahatmya, Hinduism, Madhuri Dixit, Shahrukh Khan Author Notes Kathleen M. Erndl is Associate Professor of Religion at the Florida State University, where she teaches in the field of South Asian religions.
