  • Derogatory Discourses of Veganism and the Reproduction of Speciesism in UK 1 National Newspapers Bjos 1348 134..152
The British Journal of Sociology 2011 Volume 62 Issue 1 Vegaphobia: derogatory discourses of veganism and the reproduction of speciesism in UK 1 national newspapers bjos_1348 134..152 Matthew Cole and Karen Morgan Abstract This paper critically examines discourses of veganism in UK national newspapers in 2007. In setting parameters for what can and cannot easily be discussed, domi- nant discourses also help frame understanding. Discourses relating to veganism are therefore presented as contravening commonsense, because they fall outside readily understood meat-eating discourses. Newspapers tend to discredit veganism through ridicule, or as being difficult or impossible to maintain in practice. Vegans are variously stereotyped as ascetics, faddists, sentimentalists, or in some cases, hostile extremists. The overall effect is of a derogatory portrayal of vegans and veganism that we interpret as ‘vegaphobia’. We interpret derogatory discourses of veganism in UK national newspapers as evidence of the cultural reproduction of speciesism, through which veganism is dissociated from its connection with debates concerning nonhuman animals’ rights or liberation. This is problematic in three, interrelated, respects. First, it empirically misrepresents the experience of veganism, and thereby marginalizes vegans. Second, it perpetuates a moral injury to omnivorous readers who are not presented with the opportunity to understand veganism and the challenge to speciesism that it contains. Third, and most seri- ously, it obscures and thereby reproduces

  • Juice Fasting Guidelines and Recipes
Juice Fasting Guidelines and Recipes For optimal health, detoxification or weight loss can be important goals, especially when there are endocrine/hormonal imbalances. Both goals are supported by juice fasting. These guidelines and recipes are provided to educate you to use this strategy wisely and effectively. (Note: Pregnant or nursing women, children and others with medical conditions that may be aggravated by juice fasting should not fast.) Through diet and lifestyle, we all take in toxins from our foods and environment; these build up in our bodies faster than they can be removed through natural processes. Coffee, fried foods, fast food, alcohol, frequent consumption of red meat, energy drinks with high doses of caffeine and other stimulants, and processed foods with additives, preservatives, and high salt content are particularly problematic. The liver works hard to clean these toxins out, but can become overwhelmed resulting in weight gain, blood sugar issues, fatigue, mood swings, irritability, insomnia, body odor, skin complaints and constipation. Fortunately, your liver is actually able to heal and repair itself; through juice fasting, you can give your liver a reprieve and help it clean out the toxins. When your liver is functioning well, many health problems are relieved, and you will maintain a healthy weight and balanced hormonal function. Consider having one day per week of juice fasting when you are able to relax at home. It is not advisable to continue a juice fast for more than one day at a time; one day per week is able to support the detox and weight loss goals of most people.

Introduction The texts published in the 70’s and 80’s by Peter Singer and Tom Regan has had an immeasurable impact on the discourse on the ethical-legal standing of animals. Today they form the theoretical backbone of the animal welfare movement to such an extent that the very subject matter of the ethical-legal status of animals often is referred to using Regan's central concept ‘animal rights’. 2 A significant segment of contemporary academic texts on the ethical-legal status of animals is concerned, however, that the potential of the rights discourse has been exhausted, or at least that a sufficient level of protection of animals cannot be attained solely on this basis. 3 This reflects the fact that the increased use of terms associated with rights appears to have led, at the most, to only moderate changes with regard to the actual level of protection and the underlying ethical-legal status of animals.

  • Beginners Guide to Being a Pescetarian
P E S C E T A R I A N 1 0 1 a G u i d e t o B e c o m i n g P e s c e t a r i a n FOREWORD Now that our blog has been active for a little while now, Matt and I decided to create this ebook so that we could answer some of those questions that I know we had when we first became pescetarian, as well as some of the questions we’ve received from you guys on the blog and through social media. So this ebook is going to take you through some of the basics of pescetarianism, including how to nurture a healthy pescetarian diet and how to shop for fish and seafood in a sustainable way. We’ve even included a few of our favourite recipes to help you get started! What is a Pescetarian? Quite simply, a pescetarian is someone who eats fish and seafood, but no other meat. Pescetarians do eat dairy products, such as milk and cheese, in addition to vegetables, nuts pulses and fruit. The term pescetarian comes from “pesce” which is the Italian word for fish and whilst the term has been around for a number of years (it found its way into the dictionary in 1993) it has only become widely known and heard in the last 5 years or so. Why We Became Pescetarians Laura: I’ve tried loads of different diets over the years. I grew up eating meat, however in my adolescence and adulthood I tried being both vegetarian and vegan before settling on being a pescetarian.
