NATIONALISM IN THE FRENCH REVOLUTION OF 1789 by Kiley Bickford A Thesis Submitted in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirement for a Degree with Honors (History) The Honors College University of Maine May 2014 Advisory Committee: Richard Blanke, Professor of History Alexander Grab, Adelaide & Alan Bird Professor of History Angela Haas, Visiting Assistant Professor of History Raymond Pelletier, Associate Professor of French, Emeritus Chris Mares, Director of the Intensive English Institute, Honors College Copyright 2014 by Kiley Bickford All rights reserved. Abstract The French Revolution of 1789 was instrumental in the emergence and growth of modern nationalism, the idea that a state should represent, and serve the interests of, a people, or "nation," that shares a common culture and history and feels as one. But national ideas, often with their source in the otherwise cosmopolitan world of the Enlightenment, were also an important cause of the Revolution itself. The rhetoric and documents of the Revolution demonstrate the importance of national ideas. -

Franco-American History by Fecteau
COMMUNITY OF WATERVILLE, MAINE BY ALBERT C. FECTEAU B.A., St. Michael's College, 1951 A THESIS Submitted in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Master of Arts (in History) Division of Graduate Study University of Maine Orono June, 1952 June, 1952 M.A. History THE FRENCH CANADIAN COMMUNITY OF WATERVILLE, MAINE Albert C. Fecteau ABSTRACT In the early 1800's, there was a slow migratory movement from Lower Canada into the United States. The major causes for this flow of immigrants were first: a flourishing Republic adjacent to the Canadian border which offered economic opportunity; second: the existing colonial dissatisfaction or ethnic difficulties between the French Canadians and the British rulers; and third: the dismal economic outlook within Canada. Most of Waterville's early French Canadian immigrants were led to this locality by one or all of these motives. They came a few at a time and some occasionally returned to their Canadian farms or villages. Several developments quickened the migration. The first was the building of the `Kennebec Road' in 1830. Twenty-five years later, the construction of railroads made travel ever easier. Then came the Civil War in 1861 with its many offers of employment. However, it was the building of the cotton mills in 1874 and in 1882 that attracted the greatest number of French Canadian immigrants into Waterville. These people, generally poor and largely illiterate, suffered many hardships. Many of these were common to industrial communities of the Northeastern section of the United States in a period when laisson- faire was the prevailing philosophy. -

Eleanor and the Angevin Empire
Eleanor and the Angevin Empire History Lesson 2 of an enquiry of 4 lessons Enquiry: What can the life of Eleanor of Aquitaine tell us about who held power in the Middle Ages? Ms Barnett Mr Arscott 1152 Eleanor’s marriage to King Louis VII of France ended in 1152. Once the couple had separated Eleanor returned to Aquitaine to rule as Duchess. Aged 28, Eleanor once again became a desired bride in Europe. She was single, young enough to have more children and in charge of a powerful and rich area of southern France. Eleanor was so desirable as a bride that two men tried to kidnap her on her journey from Paris to Aquitaine. Eleanor managed to avoid capture. Instead she focused on entering into marriage in a more traditional way. 8 weeks and 2 days after her separation from Louis, Eleanor married once again. Eleanor and Henry Eleanor’s second husband was 19 year old Henry. He was Duke of Normandy as well as the Count of Anjou and Maine. This marriage was controversial at the time. Firstly Henry was 9 years younger than Eleanor. Traditionally in the Middle Ages older men married younger women, not the other way round! Also, Eleanor’s second marriage happened only 8 weeks after her separation from King Louis. A chronicle from the time said that Eleanor and Henry married “without the pomp and ceremony that befitted their rank.” It wasn’t a big ceremony and didn’t reflect their wealth and importance. Why was this wedding arranged so quickly? Increased territories It is possible the wedding took place quickly because Henry was seen as a controversial choice. -

The Subversive Court of Louise Bénédicte De Bourbon, Daughter-In-Law of the Sun King (1700–1718)”
Phi Alpha Theta Pacific Northwest Conference, 8–10 April 2021 Jordan D. Hallmark, Portland State University, graduate student, “Parody, Performance, and Conspiracy in Early Eighteenth-Century France: The Subversive Court of Louise Bénédicte de Bourbon, Daughter-in-Law of the Sun King (1700–1718)” Abstract: This paper examines how the French princess Louise Bénédicte de Bourbon, duchesse du Maine (1676–1753), the wife of Louis XIV’s illegitimate son, the duc du Maine, established an exclusive court at her château de Sceaux beginning in the year 1700 that challenged the centralized cultural system of the French monarchical state. Located twenty kilometers away from the rigid and controlling political center of Versailles, the court of the duchesse du Maine subverted social norms by inventing and performing parodies of court protocols, chivalric orders, emblems, and other forms of monarchical imagery. In a time and place where women were both legally and socially barred from holding positions of authority, the duchesse du Maine created a parallel world in which she was the sovereign, presiding over a court of important political, cultural, and intellectual figures, including the philosopher Voltaire. By considering the significance of this subversive court culture in the context of the factional divisions and dynastic crises emerging in the last years of Louis XIV’s reign, this paper will show how the seemingly frivolous aristocratic divertissements of the duchesse du Maine and her circle were informed by political, social, and dynastic ambitions that would culminate in a conspiracy to overthrow the French regent, Philippe d’Orléans, in 1718. “Parody, Performance, and Conspiracy in Early Eighteenth-Century France: The Subversive Court of Louise-Bénédicte de Bourbon, Daughter-In-Law of the Sun King (1700–1718)” by Jordan D. -

Turcotte Originally published in Québec: Atelier Typographique du “Canadien,” 21 rue de la Montagne, Basse-Ville, Québec City 1867 Translated into English by Dr. Elizabeth Blood, Salem State University, Salem, Massachusetts 2019 1 | © 2019 Elizabeth Blood TRANSLATOR’S PREFACE It is estimated that, today, there are about 20 million North American descendants of the relatively small number of French immigrants who braved the voyage across the Atlantic to settle the colony of New France in the 17th and early 18th centuries. In fact, Louis-Philippe Turcotte tells us that there were fewer than 5,000 inhabitants in all of New France in 1667, but that number increased exponentially with new arrivals and with each new generation of French Canadiens. By the mid-19th century, the land could no longer support the population, and the push and pull of political and economic forces led to a massive emigration of French-Canadians into the United States in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. -
