Chairman’s Ramblings… Good Afternoon Everyone, A warm welcome to you all to the 57th Shelf Gala. Another year has gone by, a year of strange weather patterns – resulting in lots of trouble, upset and expense for many people in the Calder Valley and other areas of Yorkshire. Here in Shelf we faired a bit better. It would be a sad day for if we were flooded. Queensbury would be OK but not many others. We also have not had much snow this year through the winter period and plants and trees were blooming at strange dates. At the time of writing though (29th April) we had 4 inch of snow on our drive here in Shelf but hopefully the weather will have sorted itself out in time for Shelf Gala day. For the last few years we have been quite lucky having fine weather with plenty sunshine and only odd bits of rain, however, this year we are a bit more prepared – if we have snow on gala day we have 8° BELOW HUSKY RESCUE giving a demonstration in the arena (see facing page). What about 2016, weather permitting we should have another great gala through the organisation of my great committee who work tirelessly at providing an event which Shelf can be proud of. This year the procession starts again from Witt & Son car park because of costs involved and procedures we have now to adhere to in regards to health and safety and traffic management. Last year we started from Witt & Son car park but failed to publicise the route and many people missed the procession thinking it was going all through Shelf as in previous years. I must apologise to those people and hopefully we will do better this year. As I have mentioned before “One may ask is it worth having a procession”. I think it is as it gets the community involved and adds a bit of colour to the main road in Shelf and gives us a day to be proud of. In the arena this year we have for your entertainment music on stage provided by SELAH SOUNDS (see page 41), we have The IMPERIAL CRUSADERS, a local marching band, a Karate display by another local organisation SHOTOKAN KARATE and dance routines by MAGPIE MOVERS, DANCE STARS and STREET DANCE and as mentioned before 8° BELOW HUSKY RESCUE. We also have a “DOG WITH WAGGIEST TAIL” Competition. Outside the arena all the usual attractions: Tea Tent, Beer Tent, Fairground, Food outlets, Stalls, Football Competition, Painting Competition, Police display van and many stalls for you to look round – hopefully there is something for everyone. As Chairman of the 2016 Shelf Gala Committee I would like to thank the sponsors of this Gala: Coral Windows, Interface, Blackshaw Holdings, Robinsons Farm Shop, Witt & Sons, Volkswagen and National Breakdown. A big thank you to all the advertisers in our programme who support us year after year. Please support these people and use the services they offer. I would like to thank the gala committee – without these people the gala would not exist, to all the people who have helped us in any way to set up this gala and very important, clear it all away for another year and leave Shelf Hall Park as though no one had been there in the afternoon and finally to all you people who come through the gates and support us year after year because without you people there would be no use in having a gala.
