Boetto, Father Pietro Jesuit Cardinal Pietro Boetto (1871–1946) was the archbishop of Genoa from 1938 to 1946 after many years in leadership positions in the Society of Jesus. Pope Pius xi named him a cardinal in 1935. He has been recognized for saving many Jewish lives while working with the outlawed Jewish rescue network “Delasem.” He and his secretary Fr. Francesco Repetto “recruited bishops and archbishops throughout northern Italy to help in this endeavor, thus creating rescue networks that saved hundreds, if not thousands, of Jews […]. The help included shelter in religious institutions, false documents, hospitalization un- der false names, and escape to Switzerland.” On November 14, 2016, Yad Vashem honored Cardinal Pietro Boetto as Righ- teous among the Nations. Braun, Father Roger Roger Braun was a Jesuit priest. During the war, he devoted himself to the sav- ing of persecuted Jews without any attempt to proselytize them. On the con- trary, he tried to persuade Jews to adhere to their ancestral faith. After the war, Rabbi Henri Schilli, who became the director of the rabbinical seminary in Paris in 1950, related how father Braun’s principle of solidarity with the Jews dominated the priest’s actions during the entire occupation.

The construction of a place devoted to the memory of the young Jewish refugees rescued in Nonantola OUR PROJECT: MAKING THE MOST OF THE PRATO GALLI AREA Prato Galli, where a memorial-place for the Jewish young refugees rescued in Nonantola will be built, is in front of Villa Emma, in the area that separates it from the center of the village. It faces the mansion, just like during the war, when it watched, so to speak, the daily life of the group of Jews who found shelter there. Prato Galli as a passage-way, a bridge, a point of contact between the local community and those who came from far away. Italian Jews, from their 1848 emancipation to the establishment of the race laws in 1938, achieved a degree of assimilation into the surrounding Italian society unparalleled in other European countries. The high level of Jewish influence and involvement in the Unification effort coupled with the continued, successful integration of the Italian Jews into society well into the 20th century lead to the creation of the concept of the italianita`, or Italian-ness, of the Jewish community in Italy. As the Fascist party began to cultivate a modern, political form of anti-Semitism in Italy, culminating in the establishment of the discriminatory race laws in the late 1930’s, Italian Jews failed to successfully respond to the growing dangers facing the Jewish community. Jews in Italy believed themselves inseparable from their non-Jewish Italian counterparts, and thus safe from the genocide in other parts of Europe.

Aiding gli Ebrei Chapter 4 Conclusion This research aimed to account for how ‘Delegazione Assistenza Emigrati Ebrei’ (Delasem) – the Italian Aid Commission for Jewish Refugees – existed and operated effectively and unimpeded between 1939 and 1943 despite the Racial Laws during Mussolini’s Fascist regime. In this research, I investigated and analysed Delasem’s role as Aid Commission for foreign Jewish Refugees and Italian Jewish people. The study outlined the significance of Delasem’s aid activities, and its role as a bona fide aid organisation. It also presented reasons for how the organisation existed in Italy from 1939 to 1943 despite laws introduced by the Italian government in 1938 that should have made the organisation’s activities illegal. This study achieved its aims and answered the research question by examining Delasem documents held in Rome’s Jewish Archive (ASCER). Before this research, Delasem’s documents had not been accessed extensively before.

The Rescue of Jews in the Italian Zone of Occupied Croatia Daniel Carpi I would like to begin with several general remarks which, although of a somewhat personal nature, can be useful in illuminating the substance of my lecture as well as the methods I used in my research. I began research on the fate of the Jews in the Italian zone of occupied Croatia several years ago. I also conducted a seminar on the topic in the Jewish History Department at Tel Aviv University. At that time, my students and I sought to use as wide a range of documents as possible – both from the standpoint of the type of documents as well as their origin – including those from German, Croatian, Italian, and Jewish sources. Our aim was to attempt to understand all the various aspects of the events of the period. For various reasons I did not complete my research as planned. Now, however, having been invited by Yad Vashem to participate in this conference, I will present one part of that research – the chapter dealing with the role played by the Italian civilian and military authorities in rescuing the Jews who had found refuge in the districts of Croatia under Italian control. This is obviously only one aspect of the total rescue effort in which many bodies participated – including Jewish bodies, such as the leadership of the Jewish communities in Croatia and Dalmatia, the Union of Jewish communities of Italy, and DELASHEM (Delegazione Assistenza Emigranti), the organization established by the latter to assist refugees. Moreover, the picture will not be complete without a description of the contribution made by each and every one of them.

Aiding gli Ebrei Chapter 2 ‘Delegazione Assistenza Emigrati Ebrei’ This chapter analyses Delasem’s (Italian Aid Commission for Jewish Refugees) work from 1939 to its liquidation in 1948. It describes the formation and operation of the organisation whose primary purpose was to assist foreign and Italian Jewish people in Italy and its territories. To provide an accurate and detailed account, this chapter uses mostly primary sources retained by the Historical Archives of the Jewish Community of Rome (ASCER). The material comprises internal correspondence between various Delasem offices; external communiqués between Delasem and a myriad of companies and organisations in Italy and outside the country; minutes of meetings, internal memorandums, informal notes and photographs. Many of the organisation’s files were destroyed when the Germans occupied Italy in 1943, but much was saved. The chapter is divided into four sections. Demarcating the chapter will assist with the chronology of events in Italy, and importantly, make clearer the changing roles of Delasem between 1939 and 1948 when the organisation closed.

First, although from humble origins, trained in seminaries other than the most prestigious Jesuit institutions, and not given to com- plex theological writings, he rose through the ranks of the Society’s administration to attract the notice of Pope Pius xi and be elevated to the cardinalate in 1935. The eleva- tion was in itself highly unusual, given standard Jesuit policy and the expressed reluc- tance of the order’s Superior General Włodzimierz Ledóchowski at the time. Equally unexpected is the fact that the Jesuit Father Pietro Tacchi Venturi, the pope’s liaison with Mussolini, furnished intriguing background testimony about the elevation itself, which provides new insight into the pope’s policies and modes of operation. Finally, Cardinal Boetto was unusual for the clandestine assistance to Jews and anti-Fascists he provided as archbishop during the German occupation, for the broad range of rescue activities he allowed to his heroic secretary don Francesco Repetto and other priests, and for the wide-spread support networks that resulted throughout Northern and Cen- tral Italy. This article tells the story of a competent administrator with immense hid- den skills and profound humanity. Sources include the memoirs of Boetto’s aide, Brother Giovanni Battista Weidinger; a biography by his associate Father Arnaldo Lanz; testimony by don Francesco Repetto; documents in the Archivum Romanum Societatis Iesu in Rome and the Archivio Diocesano di Genoa; and secondary studies by historians interested in the Second World War and the rescue of Jews in Genoa.
