    Jean Harlow ~ 20 Films Harlean Harlow Carpenter - later Jean Harlow - was born in Kansas City, Missouri on 3 March 1911. After being signed by director Howard Hughes, Harlow's first major appearance was in Hell's Angels (1930), followed by a series of critically unsuccessful films, before signing with Metro-Goldwyn- Mayer in 1932. Harlow became a leading lady for MGM, starring in a string of hit films including Red Dust (1932), Dinner At Eight (1933), Reckless (1935) and Suzy (1936). Among her frequent co-stars were William Powell, Spencer Tracy and, in six films, Clark Gable. Harlow's popularity rivalled and soon surpassed that of her MGM colleagues Joan Crawford and Norma Shearer. By the late 1930s she had become one of the biggest movie stars in the world, often nicknamed "The Blonde Bombshell" and "The Platinum Blonde" and popular for her "Laughing Vamp" movie persona. She died of uraemic poisoning on 7 June 1937, at the age of 26, during the filming of Saratoga. The film was completed using doubles and released a little over a month after Harlow's death. In her brief life she married and lost three husbands (two divorces, one suicide) and chalked up 22 feature film credits (plus another 21 short / bit-part non-credits, including Chaplin's City Lights). The American Film Institute (damning with faint praise?) ranked her the 22nd greatest female star in Hollywood history.     Jitterbugs Tent meeting February 23rd 2013 I began to get a little worried during the afternoon of the 23rd Feb. Snow was falling and sticking to the ground and I wondered about cancelling. After a few hours, it became apparent that we might have a chance after all and so the trek to RTE was made. We had two apologies from Stephen and Tom, the two stalwarts who rarely miss Tent meetings. As we set up the room, a few members arrived and it looked like we were in for a cosy meeting with Stan and Ollie. Young Harry was keen to show me his Asterix the Gaul books with a number of references to Stan and Ollie and I took some photos of the pages, as I had not seen them before. As we began our first film, “The Music Box”, the door opened and a few more bodies filtered in. A few minutes later and a few more joined us... The room was now a respectable 25ish... The Music Box went down very well and all in attendance were warned to watch carefully as a Jitterbugs quiz was on the cards that night. With the final credits playing, the quiz began and the questions were focused on those with eagle eyes who might have seen something that others did not. So how many times did they do the hat switch routine in total? “Going Bye Bye”, was next to adorn the screen and Walter Long’s performance had us all in stitches... Ollie asking how they could help with Stan offering to “get you a sandwich”, had certain members in fits of laughter and it spread to the rest of the room.

    STANLIO & OLLIO Volerelaluna.it 08/04/2019 di: Edoardo Peretti Stanlio & Ollio sono due icone, due figure che giocano nel campo della mitologia collettiva. Sono conosciuti da chiunque e amati da molti, a livelli che nella storia del cinema comico, non solo muto, sono stati raggiunti forse solamente dal vagabondo Charlot. Questa fama diffusa ha spesso però portato a una rilettura del loro cinema parziale, elegiaca e dolce tanto quanto imprecisa e imperfetta, come tipico della memoria scolpita dai ricordi delle visioni dell’infanzia. La memoria dei due è stata in qualche modo confinata ai vari «Brutto Stiupìdo», ai piagnucolii di Stanlio, ai camera look e alle urla di dolore, rabbia e rassegnazione di Ollio e agli altri tormentoni visivi e lessicali. Il loro destino postumo è stato differente da quello, mettiamo, di Buster Keaton, la cui conoscenza è più limitata, ma anche più precisa e consapevole. La loro memoria più diffusa è, inoltre, una memoria perlopiù sonora, con i cortometraggi muti realizzati nel biennio 1927/1929 rimasti parzialmente nel dimenticatoio, ma in realtà importanti per come i due hanno affinato l’intesa e le caratteristiche della loro poetica; a partire dalla “slow burn“, passando per le deformazioni fisiche di oggetti e corpi, fino ad arrivare al modo particolare, all’insegna della stasi, con cui il loro cinema raccontava la guerra tra individuo e contesto tipica della comicità muta. Please email: steve at updown dot org dot uk) This is a comparison of the Laurel and Hardy silent films as presented on the 21-DVD box set ("Kirch") from Universal (in the UK) versus "The Lost Films of Laurel and Hardy" DVD set ("Lost") from Image Entertainment (formerly available in the US). The former restorations were carried out for the German Kirch Group, and supervised by Richard Bann. The latter were carried out by Michael Agee on behalf of Richard Feiner & Co. As well as the UK 21-DVD box set, the Kirch Group copies also form the basis of other releases from Universal: in Spain, in the Benelux countries, in France, in Italy, and in the Scandinavian countries; and also the releases from Kinowelt in Germany. For the most part, the basic copies used are the same in these releases, although there are slight differences in bitrate and the amount of sharpening applied to the picture. Also some titles here and there seem to have had some digital cleanup applied for their Continental releases (see "Habeus Corpus" and "Sons of the Desert" on Kinowelt for example). Please note that the “Lost” films reviewed here are from the original “The Lost Films of Laurel and Hardy” release (a private initiative by the latter-day Hal Roach Studios before being made more widely available through Image Entertainment) and not the botched half-assed private attempt by Michael Agee to re-release these films circa 2010 (of which few people, having already paid the money, eventually managed to get copies).
