    Jean Harlow ~ 20 Films Harlean Harlow Carpenter - later Jean Harlow - was born in Kansas City, Missouri on 3 March 1911. After being signed by director Howard Hughes, Harlow's first major appearance was in Hell's Angels (1930), followed by a series of critically unsuccessful films, before signing with Metro-Goldwyn- Mayer in 1932. Harlow became a leading lady for MGM, starring in a string of hit films including Red Dust (1932), Dinner At Eight (1933), Reckless (1935) and Suzy (1936). Among her frequent co-stars were William Powell, Spencer Tracy and, in six films, Clark Gable. Harlow's popularity rivalled and soon surpassed that of her MGM colleagues Joan Crawford and Norma Shearer. By the late 1930s she had become one of the biggest movie stars in the world, often nicknamed "The Blonde Bombshell" and "The Platinum Blonde" and popular for her "Laughing Vamp" movie persona. She died of uraemic poisoning on 7 June 1937, at the age of 26, during the filming of Saratoga. The film was completed using doubles and released a little over a month after Harlow's death. In her brief life she married and lost three husbands (two divorces, one suicide) and chalked up 22 feature film credits (plus another 21 short / bit-part non-credits, including Chaplin's City Lights). The American Film Institute (damning with faint praise?) ranked her the 22nd greatest female star in Hollywood history. Solie, External Member, Music and Women‘s Studies, Smith College ii © by Anna Louise Peak 2010 All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT This interdisciplinary study examines how nineteenth-century British ideas about music reflected and influenced the period‘s gendering of the mind. So far, studies of Victorian psychology have focused on the last half of the century only, and have tended to elide gender from the discussion. This study will contribute to a fuller picture of nineteenth-century psychology by demonstrating that the mind began to be increasingly gendered in the early part of the century but was largely de-gendered by century‘s end. In addition, because music was an art form in which gender norms were often subverted yet simultaneously upheld as conventional, this study will also contribute to a fuller understanding of the extent to which domestic ideology was considered descriptive or prescriptive. This work makes use of but differs from previous studies of music in nineteenth- century British literature in both scope and argument. Drawing throughout on the work of contemporary music historians and feminist musicologists, as well as general and musical periodicals, newspapers, essays, and treatises from the long nineteenth century, this dissertation argues that music, as a field, was increasingly compartmentalized beginning early in the century, and then unified again by century‘s end.

The pandemic may have prevented an outdoor celebration of the 26th annual Music Box Steps Day family festival, but not an online version, which with just as much enthusiasm will honor Laurel & Hardy and the famed 133 stairs on Vendome Street in Silver Lake where Stan & Ollie filmed their 1932 Oscar- winning short, The Music Box . On Saturday, October 24, 2020, from 2 - 4 pm, a virtual Music Box Steps Day will be broadcast worldwide on SLIA’s web site (silverlakeimprovementassociation.org) and its Facebook page (facebook.com/musicboxstepsday). If you miss the inaugural, the video will still be online for the viewing time of your choice -- and either way, it’s free! The presentation was produced by the Silver Lake Improvement Association (SLIA) and actor/entertainer Edward E. Bell, and will feature a special screening of the recently restored version of the ever-hilarious, 29-minute-long The Music Box , in which the bungling duo valiantly attempt to deliver a player piano to a home atop a steep hill. Other attractions include a reprise of last year’s on-site filmed recreation of the legendary comedy. Emmy-winning actor and film historian Stan Taffel will provide background information about The Music Box and the endless staircase where several other early comedies (and more recent films) also were shot.
