Madelyn turned up? HARDY (V.O.) Completely out of the blue. Haven’t seen her in fifteen years... 1INT. DRESSING ROOM/ROACH LOT/STUDIO - DAY 1 Oliver HARDY leans against the door to a dressing room, worried expression, talking to his friend Stan LAUREL. Both are in their late-40s, (at the peak of their movie careers), but to begin with we have no real clue as to who they are, where they are or what they do. They are just two guys in cheap suits talking to each other. HARDY lights up a cigarette as he talks. HARDY There she was, all gussied up on the front door step. And that’s something I never thought I’d see again. LAUREL picks up a boot (the right one) with a large hole in the sole. Using a knife he levers off the heel. LAUREL What’d she want? HARDY Twenty thousand bucks. LAUREL Twenty thousand? HARDY Fifteen years of back alimony. I ** said ‘what alimony? HART William S. Hart came to the movies in 1914 from a long line of theatrical ex perience, mostly Shakespearean and while to many he is the strong, silent Western hero of film he is also the peer of John Ford as a major force in shaping and developing this genre we enjoy, the Western. In 1889 in what is to become Oklahoma Territory the Cherokee Strip is just a graz ing area owned by Indians and worked day and night be the itinerant cowboys called 'tumbleweeds'. Alas, it is the end of the old West as the homesteaders are moving in . Hart becomes involved with a homesteader's daughter and her evil brother who has a scheme to jump the line as "sooners". • The Music of the Spheres: Music and the Gendered Mind in Nineteenth-Century Britain
THE MUSIC OF THE SPHERES: MUSIC AND THE GENDERED MIND IN NINETEENTH-CENTURY BRITAIN A Dissertation Submitted to the Temple University Graduate Board in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY by Anna Peak August, 2010 Examining Committee Members: Dr. Sally Mitchell, Advisory Chair, English and Women‘s Studies Dr. Peter M. Logan, English Dr. Steve Newman, English Dr. Ruth A. Solie, External Member, Music and Women‘s Studies, Smith College ii © by Anna Louise Peak 2010 All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT This interdisciplinary study examines how nineteenth-century British ideas about music reflected and influenced the period‘s gendering of the mind. So far, studies of Victorian psychology have focused on the last half of the century only, and have tended to elide gender from the discussion. This study will contribute to a fuller picture of nineteenth-century psychology by demonstrating that the mind began to be increasingly gendered in the early part of the century but was largely de-gendered by century‘s end. In addition, because music was an art form in which gender norms were often subverted yet simultaneously upheld as conventional, this study will also contribute to a fuller understanding of the extent to which domestic ideology was considered descriptive or prescriptive. This work makes use of but differs from previous studies of music in nineteenth- century British literature in both scope and argument. Drawing throughout on the work of contemporary music historians and feminist musicologists, as well as general and musical periodicals, newspapers, essays, and treatises from the long nineteenth century, this dissertation argues that music, as a field, was increasingly compartmentalized beginning early in the century, and then unified again by century‘s end.

NEWS RELEASE 26 th Annual Music Box Steps Day This Year Celebrated Online! Saturday, October 24, 2 - 4 pm LOS ANGELES – You can’t keep a classic comedy team, or its legion of fans, down! The pandemic may have prevented an outdoor celebration of the 26th annual Music Box Steps Day family festival, but not an online version, which with just as much enthusiasm will honor Laurel & Hardy and the famed 133 stairs on Vendome Street in Silver Lake where Stan & Ollie filmed their 1932 Oscar- winning short, The Music Box . On Saturday, October 24, 2020, from 2 - 4 pm, a virtual Music Box Steps Day will be broadcast worldwide on SLIA’s web site (silverlakeimprovementassociation.org) and its Facebook page (facebook.com/musicboxstepsday). If you miss the inaugural, the video will still be online for the viewing time of your choice -- and either way, it’s free! The presentation was produced by the Silver Lake Improvement Association (SLIA) and actor/entertainer Edward E. Bell, and will feature a special screening of the recently restored version of the ever-hilarious, 29-minute-long The Music Box , in which the bungling duo valiantly attempt to deliver a player piano to a home atop a steep hill. Other attractions include a reprise of last year’s on-site filmed recreation of the legendary comedy. Emmy-winning actor and film historian Stan Taffel will provide background information about The Music Box and the endless staircase where several other early comedies (and more recent films) also were shot. Los Angeles City Councilmember Mitch O’Farrell, staircase historian Charles Fleming, and other prominent figures will be zoomed in.

  • The Care & Keeping of Demons
The Care & Keeping of Demons Senior Paper Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements For a Degree Bachelor of Arts with A Major in Literature at The University of North Carolina at Asheville Spring 2016 By McKinley Churchwell ____________________ Thesis Director Katherine Min ____________________ Thesis Advisor Cynthia Chadwick The Care & Keeping of Demons 1 Chapter 1 November 1893 The demon, seated at the window, stared wistfully outside. One black nailed hand, buried in a glass vase, fondled marbles; the other restlessly played a tiny invisible piano upon his knee. He watched as children frolicked and couples strolled by, arms latched. It was an oddly warm fall day and a contagious bliss blew through Boston. The demon’s finger tapping increased with his fury; he was not allowed outside, not today, not yesterday, not for the last week in fact. Outside of the stately brick townhouse, a prison with lacey curtains, were bleating babies perfect for juggling, truant schoolboys really just begging to be tricked into doing inane tasks in return for nonexistent wishes, and frilled young ladies who would’ve been delicious paired with a black tea. He drew his hand from the vase with two marbles jailed between his fingers. One was an opaque green speckled with red; the other a transparent bright blue. The green, plucked from the watery ruins of Atlantis in the summer of 1640, had been his first. There was a bit of him imbued within it, a bit of him who was still wild and free riding whales, sinking ships, eating pirates, sleeping on mounds of gold, and fucking mermaids.

  • The Laurel & Hardy Silents – Lost Films Versus Kirch/Universal/Kinowelt
The Laurel & Hardy Silents – Lost Films versus Kirch/Universal/Kinowelt (I am always interested in updates/additions to the document. Please email: steve at updown dot org dot uk) This is a comparison of the Laurel and Hardy silent films as presented on the 21-DVD box set ("Kirch") from Universal (in the UK) versus "The Lost Films of Laurel and Hardy" DVD set ("Lost") from Image Entertainment (formerly available in the US). The former restorations were carried out for the German Kirch Group, and supervised by Richard Bann. The latter were carried out by Michael Agee on behalf of Richard Feiner & Co. As well as the UK 21-DVD box set, the Kirch Group copies also form the basis of other releases from Universal: in Spain, in the Benelux countries, in France, in Italy, and in the Scandinavian countries; and also the releases from Kinowelt in Germany. For the most part, the basic copies used are the same in these releases, although there are slight differences in bitrate and the amount of sharpening applied to the picture. Also some titles here and there seem to have had some digital cleanup applied for their Continental releases (see "Habeus Corpus" and "Sons of the Desert" on Kinowelt for example). Please note that the “Lost” films reviewed here are from the original “The Lost Films of Laurel and Hardy” release (a private initiative by the latter-day Hal Roach Studios before being made more widely available through Image Entertainment) and not the botched half-assed private attempt by Michael Agee to re-release these films circa 2010 (of which few people, having already paid the money, eventually managed to get copies).
