  • Jean Harlow ~ 20 Films
Jean Harlow ~ 20 Films Harlean Harlow Carpenter - later Jean Harlow - was born in Kansas City, Missouri on 3 March 1911. After being signed by director Howard Hughes, Harlow's first major appearance was in Hell's Angels (1930), followed by a series of critically unsuccessful films, before signing with Metro-Goldwyn- Mayer in 1932. Harlow became a leading lady for MGM, starring in a string of hit films including Red Dust (1932), Dinner At Eight (1933), Reckless (1935) and Suzy (1936). Among her frequent co-stars were William Powell, Spencer Tracy and, in six films, Clark Gable. Harlow's popularity rivalled and soon surpassed that of her MGM colleagues Joan Crawford and Norma Shearer. By the late 1930s she had become one of the biggest movie stars in the world, often nicknamed "The Blonde Bombshell" and "The Platinum Blonde" and popular for her "Laughing Vamp" movie persona. She died of uraemic poisoning on 7 June 1937, at the age of 26, during the filming of Saratoga. The film was completed using doubles and released a little over a month after Harlow's death. In her brief life she married and lost three husbands (two divorces, one suicide) and chalked up 22 feature film credits (plus another 21 short / bit-part non-credits, including Chaplin's City Lights). The American Film Institute (damning with faint praise?) ranked her the 22nd greatest female star in Hollywood history. The Creative Process THE SEARCH FOR AN AUDIO-VISUAL LANGUAGE AND STRUCTURE SECOND EDITION by John Howard Lawson Preface by Jay Leyda dol HILL AND WANG • NEW YORK www.johnhowardlawson.com Copyright © 1964, 1967 by John Howard Lawson All rights reserved Library of Congress catalog card number: 67-26852 Manufactured in the United States of America First edition September 1964 Second edition November 1967 www.johnhowardlawson.com To the Association of Film Makers of the U.S.S.R. and all its members, whose proud traditions and present achievements have been an inspiration in the preparation of this book www.johnhowardlawson.com Preface The masters of cinema moved at a leisurely pace, enjoyed giving generalized instruction, and loved to abandon themselves to reminis cence. They made it clear that they possessed certain magical secrets of their profession, but they mentioned them evasively. Now and then they made lofty artistic pronouncements, but they showed a more sincere interest in anecdotes about scenarios that were written on a cuff during a gay supper.... This might well be a description of Hollywood during any period of its cultivated silence on the matter of film-making. Actually, it is Leningrad in 1924, described by Grigori Kozintsev in his memoirs.1 It is so seldom that we are allowed to study the disclosures of a Hollywood film-maker about his medium that I cannot recall the last instance that preceded John Howard Lawson's book. There is no dearth of books about Hollywood, but when did any other book come from there that takes such articulate pride in the art that is-or was-made there? I have never understood exactly why the makers of American films felt it necessary to hide their methods and aims under blankets of coyness and anecdotes, the one as impenetrable as the other.

  • Meeting of 23Rd Feb 2013
Jitterbugs Tent meeting February 23rd 2013 I began to get a little worried during the afternoon of the 23rd Feb. Snow was falling and sticking to the ground and I wondered about cancelling. After a few hours, it became apparent that we might have a chance after all and so the trek to RTE was made. We had two apologies from Stephen and Tom, the two stalwarts who rarely miss Tent meetings. As we set up the room, a few members arrived and it looked like we were in for a cosy meeting with Stan and Ollie. Young Harry was keen to show me his Asterix the Gaul books with a number of references to Stan and Ollie and I took some photos of the pages, as I had not seen them before. As we began our first film, “The Music Box”, the door opened and a few more bodies filtered in. A few minutes later and a few more joined us... The room was now a respectable 25ish... The Music Box went down very well and all in attendance were warned to watch carefully as a Jitterbugs quiz was on the cards that night. With the final credits playing, the quiz began and the questions were focused on those with eagle eyes who might have seen something that others did not. So how many times did they do the hat switch routine in total? “Going Bye Bye”, was next to adorn the screen and Walter Long’s performance had us all in stitches... Ollie asking how they could help with Stan offering to “get you a sandwich”, had certain members in fits of laughter and it spread to the rest of the room.

Abstract: Part Time Wife could be considered as the first McCarey fea- ture with all his traits. It may be also considered as a “Hollywood Com- edy of Remarriage” due to its subject matter and its relationship with The Awful Truth (1937). In this film we can distinguish two thematic groups: marital conflict or divorce menace marital and marital reconciliation, as a return to Paradise. Keywords: marriage, divorce, Old Comedy, New Comedy, the creation of a new woman, remarriage, return to Paradise, green world. a Profesor de la Universidad Católica de Valencia San Vicente Mártir Correspondencia: Calle Guillem de Castro, 94. 46001 Valencia. HART William S. Hart came to the movies in 1914 from a long line of theatrical ex perience, mostly Shakespearean and while to many he is the strong, silent Western hero of film he is also the peer of John Ford as a major force in shaping and developing this genre we enjoy, the Western. In 1889 in what is to become Oklahoma Territory the Cherokee Strip is just a graz ing area owned by Indians and worked day and night be the itinerant cowboys called 'tumbleweeds'. Alas, it is the end of the old West as the homesteaders are moving in . Hart becomes involved with a homesteader's daughter and her evil brother who has a scheme to jump the line as "sooners". The scenes of the gigantic land rush is one of the most noted action sequences in film history.
