It owns the Sampson Theater building located at the corner of East Elm Street and Champlin Avenue, which was donated to it in 2004. The Sampson Theatre, constructed in 1910 and operated as a theater until 1930, was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2009. PYTCO began a renovation of the building with a grant-funded roof replacement that has now been completed and seeks to fully restore the building for use, once again, as a theater and as a community cultural and conference center.

Roger Ebert’s Film Festival 2017 April 19–23, 2017 Chaz Ebert, Co-Founder, Producer, and Host Nate Kohn, Festival Director Casey Ludwig, Assistant Director More information about the festival can be found at www.ebertfest.com Mission Founded by the late Roger Ebert, University of Illinois Journalism graduate and a Pulitzer Prize- winning film critic, Roger Ebert’s Film Festival takes place in Urbana-Champaign each April for a week, hosted by Chaz Ebert. The festival presents 12 films representing a cross-section of important cinematic works overlooked by audiences, critics and distributors. The films are screened in the 1,500-seat Virginia Theatre, a restored movie palace built in the 1920s. A portion of the festival’s income goes toward on-going renovations at the theatre. The festival brings together the films’ producers, writers, actors and directors to help showcase their work. A film- maker or scholar introduces each film, and each screening is followed by a substantive on-stage Q&A discussion among filmmakers, critics and the audience. In addition to the screenings, the festival hosts a number of academic panel discussions featuring filmmaker guests, scholars and students. The mission of Roger Ebert’s Film Festival is to praise films, genres and formats that have been overlooked.

Before the National Socialists took charge, Germany, too, had its share of "modern" art, meaning: something different just about every year - as follows from the word itself. The paintings appear to confirm this.     5 JUL 19 5 SEP 19 1 | 5 JUL 19 - 5 SEP 19 88 LOTHIAN ROAD | FILMHOUSECinema.COM FILMS WORTH TALKING ABOUT HOME OF THE EDINBURGH INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL Filmhouse, Summer 2019, Part II Luckily I referred to the last issue of this publication as the early summer double issue, which gives me the opportunity to call this one THE summer double issue, as once again we’ve been able to cram TWO MONTHS (July and August) of brilliant cinema into its pages. Honestly – and honesty about the films we show is one of the very cornerstones of what we do here at Filmhouse – should it become a decent summer weather-wise, please don’t let it put you off coming to the cinema, for that would be something of an, albeit minor in the grand scheme of things, travesty. Mind you, a quick look at the long-term forecast tells me you’re more likely to be in here hiding from the rain. Honestly…? No, I made that last bit up. I was at a world-renowned film festival on the south coast of France a few weeks back (where the weather was terrible!) seeing a great number of the films that will figure in our upcoming programmes. A good year at that festival invariably augurs well for a good year at this establishment and it’s safe to say 2019 was a very good year.     12 Big Names from World Cinema in Conversation with Marrakech Audiences

    The 18th edition of the Marrakech International Film Festival runs from 29 November to 7 December 2019 12 BIG NAMES FROM WORLD CINEMA IN CONVERSATION WITH MARRAKECH AUDIENCES Rabat, 14 November 2019. The “Conversation with” section is one of the highlights of the Marrakech International Film Festival and returns during the 18th edition for some fascinating exchanges with some of those who create the magic of cinema around the world. As its name suggests, “Conversation with” is a forum for free-flowing discussion with some of the great names in international filmmaking. These sessions are free and open to all: industry professionals, journalists, and the general public. During last year’s festival, the launch of this new section was a huge hit with Moroccan and internatiojnal film lovers. More than 3,000 people attended seven conversations with some legendary names of the big screen, offering some intense moments with artists, who generously shared their vision and their cinematic techniques and delivered some dazzling demonstrations and fascinating anecdotes to an audience of cinephiles. After the success of the previous edition, the Festival is recreating the experience and expanding from seven to 11 conversations at this year’s event. Once again, some of the biggest names in international filmmaking have confirmed their participation at this major FIFM event. They include US director, actor, producer, and all-around legend Robert Redford, along with Academy Award-winning French actor Marion Cotillard. Multi-award-winning Palestinian director Elia Suleiman will also be in attendance, along with independent British producer Jeremy Thomas (The Last Emperor, Only Lovers Left Alive) and celebrated US actor Harvey Keitel, star of some of the biggest hits in cinema history including Thelma and Louise, The Piano, and Pulp Fiction.

I thought, “If it’s not too expensive…” lain carousel music boxes she received as birthday Well, I had a lot of fun with that calliope, repairing it and adding Wand Christmas gifts. For the next few years I contin- drums and a glockenspiel. That fall we went to see someone ued the tradition, once buying a music box with the name Looff who was selling a Parker carousel with a Wurlitzer 125 trumpet and a date of 1910. I thought “there is more to this than just a band organ. Seeing that organ was love at first sight, but the box that plays music.” So I searched for and found a book on owner was leaving for Florida for the winter. I thought about the history of carousel animals. We read about the talented that organ all winter and when he came back I bought one immigrant carvers and the different carousel companies and Parker carousel horse in pieces, the 125 organ and a carving styles. We were hooked. We said “someday we will get Wellershaus organ in pieces. We put the Wurlitzer 125 in the a real antique carousel horse.” A year later, at a garage sale, house and if you went outside to listen, the volume was just Diane found a little Herschell Spillman horse with no legs or about right. Diane’s dad came to see our new acquisition and ears.

    An Obligation to do One’s Best by Dana Smessaert May 2020 Director of Thesis: Angela Wells Major Department: School of Art and Design An Obligation to do One's Best is an exploration of myth and reality at home in a small southern town. The artist is calling into question whose history we are referencing when it comes to art, economics, and culture. In these liminal landscapes, the viewer/spectator becomes a collaborator in the mythos of racism in the Southern narrative—the denial of not only its racist past but also the strides of the Civil Rights protests. The research explores the agency of history and cultural capital through a site-specific installation with images, video, sculpture, and sound. Creating a liminal landscape of the American South through physical and metaphysical readings of its trauma, history, and understanding the “...south as a noun that behaves like a verb.”1 The South is entwined with history, politics, economics, and racism, a link that can never be severed, this paper consorts with classic literature, history, cinema, demographics, and philosophy. The American South, the house, the name, and the family's history are complicated and seemingly transparent to those on the outside.
