HART William S. Hart came to the movies in 1914 from a long line of theatrical ex perience, mostly Shakespearean and while to many he is the strong, silent Western hero of film he is also the peer of John Ford as a major force in shaping and developing this genre we enjoy, the Western. In 1889 in what is to become Oklahoma Territory the Cherokee Strip is just a graz ing area owned by Indians and worked day and night be the itinerant cowboys called 'tumbleweeds'. Alas, it is the end of the old West as the homesteaders are moving in . Hart becomes involved with a homesteader's daughter and her evil brother who has a scheme to jump the line as "sooners". The scenes of the gigantic land rush is one of the most noted action sequences in film history.

  • The Laurel & Hardy Silents – Lost Films Versus Kirch/Universal/Kinowelt
The Laurel & Hardy Silents – Lost Films versus Kirch/Universal/Kinowelt (I am always interested in updates/additions to the document. Please email: steve at updown dot org dot uk) This is a comparison of the Laurel and Hardy silent films as presented on the 21-DVD box set ("Kirch") from Universal (in the UK) versus "The Lost Films of Laurel and Hardy" DVD set ("Lost") from Image Entertainment (formerly available in the US). The former restorations were carried out for the German Kirch Group, and supervised by Richard Bann. The latter were carried out by Michael Agee on behalf of Richard Feiner & Co. As well as the UK 21-DVD box set, the Kirch Group copies also form the basis of other releases from Universal: in Spain, in the Benelux countries, in France, in Italy, and in the Scandinavian countries; and also the releases from Kinowelt in Germany. For the most part, the basic copies used are the same in these releases, although there are slight differences in bitrate and the amount of sharpening applied to the picture. Also some titles here and there seem to have had some digital cleanup applied for their Continental releases (see "Habeus Corpus" and "Sons of the Desert" on Kinowelt for example). Please note that the “Lost” films reviewed here are from the original “The Lost Films of Laurel and Hardy” release (a private initiative by the latter-day Hal Roach Studios before being made more widely available through Image Entertainment) and not the botched half-assed private attempt by Michael Agee to re-release these films circa 2010 (of which few people, having already paid the money, eventually managed to get copies).

With the May 21st, 2005 meeting, On The Loose takes a renewed purpose in tackling the “loving study of the persons and films of Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy.” In the past few weeks, eh, months, ahem, years, bhhrr, near- ly a decade now, we have been steadily drifting away from the absolute purity of that purpose. Now, while we have not drifted so far away that the far shores presently reside on distant continents (or in-continents as may be the case with some of our members), it certainly wouldn’t hurt to put our shoulders together, row for the beach and hope sin- cerely that we wind up somewhere in the vicinity of Culver City. That doesn’t mean. however, that we won’t find our- selves now and again passing the Christie Studios, the Keaton lot, Mr. Sennett and company, or hanging from a telephone pole in the company of a certain cross-dressing ape friend. On the other hand, we will at all cost avoid wan- dering too far afield with the child-demons: Sunny McKean, Arthur Trimble and Mickey “himself” McNausea.
