The Many Deaths of Captain Cook A Study in Metropolitan Mass Culture, 1780-1810 Ruth Scobie PhD University of York Department of English April 2013 i Ruth Scobie The Many Deaths of Captain Cook Abstract This thesis traces metropolitan representations, between 1780 and 1810, of the violent death of Captain James Cook at Kealakekua Bay in Hawaii. It takes an interdisciplinary approach to these representations, in order to show how the interlinked texts of a nascent commercial culture initiated the creation of a colonial character, identified by Epeli Hau’ofa as the looming “ghost of Captain Cook.” The introduction sets out the circumstances of Cook’s death and existing metropolitan reputation in 1779. It situates the figure of Cook within contemporary mechanisms of ‘celebrity,’ related to notions of mass metropolitan culture. It argues that previous accounts of Cook’s fame have tended to overemphasise the immediacy and unanimity with which the dead Cook was adopted as an imperialist hero; with the result that the role of the scene within colonialist histories can appear inevitable, even natural. In response, I show that a contested mythology around Cook’s death was gradually constructed over the three decades after the incident took place, and was the contingent product of a range of texts, places, events, and individuals. The first section examines responses to the news of Cook’s death in January 1780, focusing on the way that the story was mediated by, first, its status as ‘news,’ created by newspapers; and second, the effects on Londoners of the Gordon riots in June of the same year. -

Coates and Reynell Family Papers, 1677-1930 (bulk 1730-1850) 66 boxes, 147 vols., 40 lin. feet Collection 140 Abstract Mary Coates (1707-1773) and her husband John Reynell (1708-1784) presided over a successful dynasty of Quaker professionals and philanthropists, despite having no biological children who lived to adulthood. After the death of Mary’s brother Samuel in 1748, John Reynell took on responsibility for her three orphaned nephews, Thomas, Josiah, and Samuel Jr. Little Samuel (1711-1748) eventually succeeded his “Uncle Reynell” as the head of a prosperous international trade business, dealing in American lumber, Caribbean sugar, and European manufactured goods. A contemporary of Benjamin Franklin, Samuel was among the first shareholders of the Library Company of Philadelphia. His son, Benjamin H. Coates, was a poet and a physician, a founder of the North American Medical and Surgical Journal and an attending physician at several charitable institutions in Philadelphia. Josiah established his own shipping business with his friend Edward Randolph, and fathered a vigorous family. His son George Morrison Coates also became a merchant, specializing in hardware. George’s two unmarried daughters, Beulah and Mary, distinguished themselves as pillars of women’s charitable organizations in the mid-nineteenth century. -

They have their roots in my experience as a law student. I have been interested in the case of Slater v. Baker and Stapleton since I first learned of it in law school. I was privileged to be a member of the Yale School Class of 1974. I took an elective course with Dr. Jay Katz on the protection of human subjects and then served as a research assistant to Dr. Katz in the summers of 1973 and 1974. Dr. Katz’s course used his new book EXPERIMENTATION WITH HUMAN BEINGS (New York: Russell Sage Foundation 1972). On pages 526-527, there are excerpts from Slater v. Baker. I sought out and read Slater v. Baker. It seemed that there must be an interesting backstory to the case, but it was not accessible at that time. I then practiced health law for nearly forty years, representing hospitals and doctors, and writing six editions of a textbook on hospital law. I applied my interest in experimentation with human beings by serving on various Institutional Review Boards (IRBs) during that period. IRBs are federally required committees that review and approve experiments with humans at hospitals, universities and other institutions. -

Thomas Anson of Shugborough and The Greek Revival Andrew Baker October 2019 ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS My interest in Thomas Anson began in 1982, when I found myself living in a cottage which had formerly been occupied by a seamstress on the Shugborough estate. In those days very little was known about him, just enough to suggest he was a person worth investigating, and little enough material available to give plenty of space for fantasy. In the early days, I was given a great deal of information about the background to 18th- century England by the late Michael Baigent, and encouragement by his friend and colleague Henry Lincoln (whose 1974 film for BBC’s “Chronicle” series, The Priest the Painter and the Devil introduced me to Shugborough) and the late Richard Leigh. I was grateful to Patrick, Earl of Lichfield, and Leonora, Countess of Lichfield, for their enthusiastic support. I presented my early researches at a “Holy Blood and Holy Grail” weekend at Shugborough. Patrick Lichfield’s step-grandmother, Margaret, Countess of Lichfield, provided comments on a particularly puzzling red-herring. Over the next twenty years the fantasies were deflated, but Thomas Anson remained an intriguing figure. I have Dr Kerry Bristol of Leeds University to thank for revealing that Thomas really was a kind of “eminence grise”, an influential figure behind the scenes of the 18th-century Greek Revival. Her 2006 conference at Shugborough was the turning point. The time was ripe for new discoveries. I wish to thank several researchers in different fields who provided important revelations along the way: Paul Smith, for the English translation from Chris Lovegrove, (former editor of the Journal of the Pendragon Society) of the first portion of Lady Anson’s letter referring to Honoré d’Urfé’s pastoral novel L’Astrée, written in French. -

ABSCONDING SERVANTS, ANXIOUS GERMANS, AND ANGRY SAILORS: WORKING PEOPLE AND THE MAKING OF THE PHILADELPHIA ELECTION RIOT OF 1742 Michael Bradley McCoy University ofPittsburgh fortnight before the Philadelphia Election of 1742, a weathered seaman named John Spence advised Quaker merchant Thomas Lloyd that a mob of sailors could help the Quakers defeat their political adversaries, the Proprietary Party. "In a jocular Manner," Spence told Lloyd "that if the Quakers would give him fifteen hundred acres of land, they should have the Election." After three years of bitter intra-elite division sparked by theWar forJenkins' Ear, Lloyd probably entertained the offer.Repulsed, however, by the mariner's audacity, Lloyd quickly retorted, "It was not to or nor was in.. .Spence's power help hinder" any party, it his place. Indeed, while laborers like Spence represented a growing segment of the urban population, inadequate taxable wealth meant most could not participate directly within the polity. Because of their economic situation, "very few" mariners were "worth [the] Fifty Pounds" required for participation in Pennsylvania politics.2 Yet this year sailors would participate, and, wryly, Spence told Lloyd: "If clubs would not do.
