  • The Diet of Otters (Lutra Lutra) on the Agri River System, One of the Most Important Presence Sites in Italy: a Molecular Approach
The diet of otters (Lutra lutra) on the Agri river system, one of the most important presence sites in Italy: a molecular approach Maria Buglione1, Simona Petrelli1, Claudia Troiano2, Tommaso Notomista1, Eleonora Rivieccio1 and Domenico Fulgione1 1 Department of Biology, University of Naples Federico II, Naples, Italy, Italy 2 Department of Humanities, University of Naples Federico II, Naples, Italy, Italy ABSTRACT Background. The Eurasian otter (Lutra lutra) underwent a strong decline in large areas of the Central-Western part of its distribution range, during the second half of the twentieth century. In Italy, only residual fragmented nuclei survive in the Central- Southern part of the peninsula. Nowadays, the otter is one of the most endangered mammals in Italy, and increasing the knowledge about the ecology of this species is a key step in defining fitting management strategies. Here we provide information about the diet of otter on the Agri river system, one of the most important presence sites in Italy, to understand both the species' food requirements and the impact on fish communities. Methods. DNA metabarcoding and High Throughput Sequencing were used on DNA extracted from spraints. We amplified DNA with a primer set for vertebrates, focusing efforts on the bulk of the otter's diet (fishes and amphibians). Results. Our findings showed that the diet of the otter was dominated by cyprinids (97.77%, and 99.14% of fishes), while amphibians represented 0.85% of the sequences analyzed. Results are in general accordance with previous studies based on morpho- logical characterization; however, molecular analyses allow the resolving of some Submitted 26 March 2020 morphological uncertainties.

The morphometric, meristic and phenotypical characters of the members of the genus Alburnus from the Adriatic Basin were analyzed on specimens from 11 localities, representing eight watersheds. The number of gill rakers, the number of lateral line scales, the number of branched anal fi n rays and the coverage of the ventral keel by scales have the greatest signifi cance in differentiating between species. Signifi cant morphological differences exist between the Alburnus population from Lake Lugano (type locality for Alborella maxima Fatio, 1882) and all the remaining investigated populations.

  • Aggiornamento Sistematico Dei Pesci D' Acqua Dolce
It.J.Fresh.Ichthyol. Italian Journal of Freshwater Ichthyology, 2014 vol. 1 2014(1) : 133-162.

It was originally described in the genus Pseudophoxinus as (Pseudophoxinus persidis) and then Petroleuciscus (as Petroleuciscus persidis). In this study, we examined phylogenetic relationships of the Iranian Persian chub with other relatives in the family Cyprinidae based on the mitochondrial cytochrome b gene to estimate the phylogenetic (and taxonomic) position of the species. Our molecular phylogenies show that new fish sequences from the drainages in southern Iran are clustered with sequences of the genus Acanthobrama from GenBank while the sequences from two other genera (Pseudophoxinus and Petroleuciscus) are in distinct clade. Therefore, we conclude that the populations of Persian Chub in drainages of southern Iran (i.e., Kol, Kor, Maharlu and Persis) belong to the genus Acanthobrama and species Acanthobrama persidis. The predicted geographic distributions for the species showed a large area of suitable climate for A. persidis across south and west of Iran especially in the Kor River basin. Some other parts in the Persis and Tigris are also might have been suitable habitats for this cyprinid species showing possible dispersal route of Acanthobrama from Tigris to the Persis, Kor and Kol basins.

We used multivariate and re- gression analysis to evaluate the relationships between the red swamp crayfish, water quality, macrophytes abundance, watercourse hydraulics and the fish community. All analyses indicated that red swamp crayfish was less likely to establish in large, deeper and fast flowing waterways, especially when these are deprived of ve- getation and less eutrophicated.

The study includes four populations of the alborella and 14 populations of the vulturino. A total of 57 haplotypes were identified; these could not be sorted into two reciprocally monophyletic clusters. Multiple phylogenetic methods and nested clade phylogeographical analysis consistently retrieved three well-supported clades, two of which contained both Northern and Southern Italian haplotypes. A third clade is limited to southern Italy. This clade is tentatively assigned to the vul- turino. The placement in the same clade of northern and southern Italian haplotypes is explained in light of the introductions of fishes operated from northern to central and southern Italy. The origin of the vulturino dates back to the last two million years.
