Determining the vulnerability of Mexican pine forests to bark beetles of the genus Dendroctonus Erichson (Coleoptera: Curculionidae: Scolytinae) Y. Salinas-Morenoa,*, A. Agerb, C.F.Vargasa,J.L. Hayesc, G. Zunigaa ABSTRACT Bark beetles of the genus Dendroctonus are natural inhabitants of forests; under particular conditions some species of this genus can cause large-scale tree mortality. However, only in recent decades has pri- ority been given to the comprehensive study of these insects in Mexico. Mexico possesses high ecological diversity in Dendroctonus-Pinus associations. The geographic coexistence of 12 Dendroctonus species suggests greater vulnerability or threat of tree mortality relative to other areas. We use a biogeographic strategy to identify and rank the areas most vulnerable to tree mortality caused by bark beetles in Mex- ico. We aim to define the areas that might experience high impact by these insects and also to provide a geographic database useful to forest resource management and conservation policies in Mexico. Using collection records of bark beetles and pines, we develop a quantitative estimate of the threat of beetle infestation of forest areas based on factors including pine and beetle species density, host preference and level of mortality caused by beetle species. A quantitative estimate of forest area vulnerability, the Bark Beetle Threat Index (BBTI) was calculated. Despite the vast area of geographic coincidence of Pinus and Dendroctonus in Mexico, the regions of highest bark beetle pressure are restricted to small zones within some mountain systems. The region that has been most affected by this insect group during the past hundred years is the Transverse Volcanic Belt, followed by the Sierra Madre Occidental and Sierra Madre del Sur. -

We determine the karyotype and the chromosome morphometry in five Caesalpinia s.l. spp., and we describe the heterochromatin pattern in four of them. The diploid chromosome number of 24 was reported for the first time in Caesalpinia calycina, Caesalpinia microphylla and Caesalpinia pluviosa var. peltophoroides, and confirmed in Caesalpinia ferrea var. leiostachya and Caesalpinia pulcherrima. Different karyotype formulae were obtained for each of these five species. -

Lentz ABSTRACT The overall goal of this study was to determine if there are associations between silviculture practices of the ancient Maya and the biodiversity of the modern forest. This was accomplished by conducting paleoethnobotanical, ecological and genetic investigations at reforested but historically urbanized ancient Maya ceremonial centers. The first part of our investigation was conducted at Tikal National Park, where we surveyed the tree community of the modern forest and recovered preserved plant remains from ancient Maya archaeological contexts. The second set of investigations focused on genetic variation and structure in Manilkara zapota (L.) P. Royen, one of the dominant trees in both the modern forest and the paleoethnobotanical remains at Tikal. We hypothesized that the dominant trees at Tikal would be positively correlated with the most abundant ancient plant remains recovered from the site and that these trees would have higher economic value for contemporary Maya cultures than trees that were not dominant. We identified 124 species of trees and vines in 43 families. Moderate levels of evenness (J=0.69-0.80) were observed among tree species with shared levels of dominance (1-D=0.94). From the paleoethnobotanical remains, we identified a total of 77 morphospecies of woods representing at least 31 plant families with 38 identified to the species level. -

With the purpose of addressing the pattern of karyotype evolution in Caesalpinia species, chromosome morphology was characterized in five species from Brazil, and karyotypic asymmetry was analyzed in 14 species from South America. All accessions had the chromosome number 2n = 24, which was first described here for Caesalpinia laxiflora Tul. and Cenostigma macrophyllum Tul. The karyotype formula of C. laxiflora, Caesalpinia pyramidalis Tul., and C. macrophyllum was 12 m. The formula varies amongst the populations of Caesalpinia bracteosa Tul. (11 m + 1 sm) and Caesalpinia echinata Lam. (10 m + 2 sm and 9 m + 3 sm). The intra- and interspecific variations in chromosome length were significant (analysis of variance, P < 0.05). Analyzing the asymmetry index (AI), revealed that Caesalpinia calycina Benth. had the most asymmetrical karyotype (AI = 10.52), whereas Caesalpinia paraguarienses (D. Parodi) Burkat. and Caesalpinia gilliesii (Hook.) Benth. had the most symmetrical karyotypes (AI = 0.91 and 1.10, respectively). There has been a trend to lower AI values for the Caesalpinia s.l. species assigned in Libidibia and intermediate values for those combined into Poincianella. -

These deposits might arguably have formed at ~ 33 Ma, thus coinciding in age with the La Azul fluorite deposits, within the same district. Although this age is significantly younger than previously existing estimations, the deposits at Taxco consistently cluster into a Late Eocene to Oligocene metallogenic event. -

Key words: Brasilettia, Guaymasia, Caesalpinia, Caesalpinieae, Coulteria, Fabaceae, nomenclature Introduction Prior to morphological (Lewis and Schrire, 1995; Nores et al., 2012) and molecular (Simpson et al., 2003; Nores et al., 2012; Gagnon et al., 2013; Gagnon et al., 2016) phylogenetic studies, Caesalpinia sensu lato included 25 genus names in synonymy and comprised c. 150 species, mostly in the Palaeo- and Neotropics (Lewis, 1998). Gagnon et al. (2013) confirmed that all the species placed in Caesalpinia in its broadest circumscription are not a monophyletic group and should be recognised in several distinct genera. New combinations have been proposed for the majority of species occurring in México, USA, Central and South America (Gagnon et al., 2016) to reflect the latest phylogenetic data, but some are still needed in a few genera where species delimitations remain unclear. -

Altitudinal patterns of distribution, diversity, and speciesturnover in the avi- fauna of the Sierra de Atoyac, Sierra Madre de1Sur, Guerrero, Mexico, were studied along a transectfrom the tropical coastalplain to high-altitude coniferousforests. Species richness is highest at low elevations and declines with increasing altitude. Richness is relatively uniform within habitat types,but high levels of speciesturnover are found at habitat ecotones. Altitudinal rangesof congenerspecies pairs overlap more frequently than predicted by null models, suggestingthat competition may not have played a dominant role in structuring the community. Patterns of diversity, endemism, and habitat destruction are discussedin terms of conservation priorities. Se estudiaron 10spatrones de distribution altitudinal, diversidad y recambio de especiesde la avifauna residente en la Sierra de Atoyac, Guerrero, Mexico, a lo largo de un transect0 altitudinal que abarca todos 10stipos de vegetation presentes,desde la vege- tacion costerahasta 10sbosques altos de coniferas. La riqueza de especieses mayor en las partesbajas, decreciendo conforme aumenta la altitud. La riqueza es notablementeconstante dentro de 10s habitats, pero altos niveles de recambio de especies se encuentran en 10s ecotonos. Los intervalos altitudinales que ocupan pares y trios de especiescongenericas muestranun mayor solapamientoque el predicho por modelosestadisticos nulos, sugiriendo que la competencia no ha jugado un papel dominante en la estructuracionde las comuni- dades. -

Wallace California Botanic Garden [formerly Rancho Santa Ana Botanic Garden], 1500 North College Avenue, Claremont, California 91711 ([email protected]) abstract An account of the extent, diversity, and importance of the Californian collections of Thomas Coulter in the herbarium (TCD) of Trinity College, Dublin, Ireland, is presented here. It is based on examination of collections in TCD, several other collections available online, and referenced literature. Additional infor- mation on historical context, content of herbarium labels and annotations is included. Coulter’s collections in TCD are less well known than partial duplicate sets at other herbaria. He was the first botanist to cross the desert of southern California to the Colorado River. Coulter’s collections in TCD include not only 60 vascular plant specimens previously unidentified as type material but also among the first moss andmarine algae specimens known to be collected in California. A list of taxa named for Thomas Coulter is included.
