Match background

Getafe CF will look to reach the UEFA Cup quarter-finals in their first season in Europe as they look to build on a 2-1 lead from the first leg against SL Benfica.

• Second-half goals from Rubén De La Red and Pablo Hernández saw the Spanish side take full advantage following Óscar Cardozo's early dismissal in . Mantorras pulled one back for Benfica, yet the home team's 300th game in UEFA club competition was to be one they would rather forget.

• Benfica are now without a permanent coach, with José Antonio Camacho resigning in the wake of a 2-2 draw against 's bottom side, UD Leiria, on Sunday. The 52-year-old former Real CF left-back said: "I cannot do anything more to improve the team's performances."

• In the short term, Camacho has been replaced by Fernando Chalana. The 49-year-old former Portugal and Benfica winger, who also played for FC Girondins de Bordeaux, has been on the club's coaching staff since hanging up his boots in the early 1990s.

• This will be Chalana's first game as a coach in UEFA club competition, but he twice faced Spanish sides as a player. His Portugal side drew 1-1 with at the 1984 UEFA European Championship, while his Benfica team won 2-1 at Balompié in the 1982/83 UEFA Cup.

• Getafe coach has played against Benfica before during his time as an FC Barcelona player. The teams met in the group stage of the 1991/92 European Champion Clubs' Cup – the final edition before the advent of the UEFA Champions League.

• The Danish star started in both fixtures as Barça drew 0-0 in Lisbon and won 2-1 at . They went on to win the competition, scoring the only goal as they beat UC Sampdoria in the final at Wembley.

• Now 43, Laudrup is one of the most celebrated players in Danish history and was part of the Denmark side which won the 1992 UEFA European Championship.

• He started his career at Kjøbenhavns BK, then played for Brøndby IF before heading abroad to play for Juventus, Barça and Real Madrid CF. He won a league title with Juventus in Italy, four in Spain with Barcelona and one more with Madrid and later won a Dutch Cup in a spell at AFC Ajax.

• He moved into coaching with Brøndby, winning the Danish Cup in 2002/03 and a league and cup double in 2004/05 before leaving in 2006. He replaced at Getafe last summer after the German was hired to coach Madrid.

• Benfica have now played 19 games against teams from Spain, winning five, drawing six and losing eight.

• Notable victories against Spanish opposition include two successive European Champion Clubs' Cup final triumphs in 1960 and 1961.

• Béla Güttman's Benfica beat Barcelona 3-2 in the 1960 final at the Wankdorf Stadium in Berne, Switzerland. Férenc Puskás scored a hat-trick for Real Madrid CF in the final the following season, but two goals from Eusébio helped Benfica register a 5-3 win at the Olympisch Stadion in Amsterdam.

• In Spain itself, they have won just once – beating Real Betis Balompié 2-1 in the first round of the 1982/83 UEFA Cup – drawing another game and losing six.

• Since that win in Seville, the tide has turned for Benfica, and they have now not won in their last ten games against Spanish opposition, a run which includes a 7-0 loss to RC Celta de Vigo in the third round of the 1999/2000 UEFA Cup – Benfica's heaviest in UEFA club competition.

• Benfica attacking and Getafe's left-back played together in the Romanian international's only season at AC Milan in 2001/02. The pair helped the Serie A side reach the last four of the UEFA Cup, bowing out against losing finalists BV Borussia Dortmund.

• Congolese-born Benfica forward Ariza Makukula may be up against more than one former team-mate. He was a colleague of Getafe midfielder Francisco Sousa during a season-long loan at in 2003/04 while he played alongside midfielder and forward during his time at Sevilla FC.

• Blanco and Makukula were both in the Sevilla squad that won the 2005/06 UEFA Cup, but neither were on the field as ' men beat Middlesbrough FC 4-0 in the final in Eindhoven.

• Getafe's Albín, Casquero, and are within a booking of a one-match ban while Pablo Hernández and Braulio are suspended after being booked in Lisbon. Benfica's Óscar Cardozo and Augustin Binya are suspended, while Maxi Pereira and Luís Filipe remain within a booking of a ban. Petit returns after a one-match suspension.

• Getafe finished top of Group G to qualify for the Round of 32 where they beat AEK Athens FC 4-1 on aggregate. Benfica defeated 1. FC Nürnberg 3-2 on aggregate in the first knockout round having parachuted into the competition after finishing third in their UEFA Champions League group.

•Benfica reached the UEFA Cup Round of 16 last season, beating Paris Saint-Germain FC 4-3 on aggregate before losing out in the last eight to Getafe's Primera División rivals – and eventual losing finalists – RCD Espanyol.

• The draw for the quarter-finals and semi-finals of the UEFA Cup will be held at UEFA HQ in Nyon on Friday 14 March at 14.00CET.

Competition information

The UEFA Cup grew out of the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup and was first held in 1971/72. The UEFA Cup is open to the holders, the teams finishing in leading positions behind the champions in their domestic top flights, the winners of national cup competitions, the winners of the League Cup in certain countries, the eleven winners of the final matches in the UEFA Intertoto Cup, three clubs from UEFA's Fair Play League and 16 clubs eliminated from the third qualifying round of the UEFA Champions League. The eight third-placed clubs at the end of the UEFA Champions League group stage drop into the UEFA Cup, in time for the tournament's knockout phase.

• Format: If two or more teams were equal on points on completion of all the group matches, the following criteria was applied to determine the rankings: a) superior goal difference from all group matches played; b) higher number of goals scored; c) higher number of goals scored away; d) higher number of wins; e) higher number of away wins; f) higher number of coefficient points accumulated by the club in question, as well as its association, over the previous five seasons

• Locally-trained players rule: In February 2005, UEFA announced that the 'A' list that teams submit for UEFA club competitions will continue to be limited to 25 players, and from 2007/08, at least six places on this list will be reserved for players trained by the club's own football academy of which half can be players trained by other clubs from within the same association of the said club.

The 'B' list will also continue to exist - involving an unlimited number of Under-21 players who have been at the club for two seasons. In 2006/07 the number of locally-trained players required began at four but the current six will rise to eight in 2008/09, with up to half of each figure allowed to be association trained.

A club-trained player is defined as a player who has been registered for a minimum of three seasons with the club between the age of 15 and 21, whereas an association-trained player is one who has been registered for at least three seasons by the club or by other clubs affiliated to the same association between the age of 15 and 21.

UEFA is concerned some clubs are not training enough of their own players, but simply taking them from elsewhere. The proposed measures have the objective of creating a better balance in domestic competitions, preventing clubs from simply 'hoarding' players in squads and creating a system whereby locally-trained players would be given a greater opportunity to play regularly in club sides - ensuring a large reservoir of talent for national teams as a consequence.

• Competition format: Two qualifying rounds produce a first round of 80 teams who play over two legs to find the 40 clubs that make up the group stage. This phase comprises eight groups of five, with each side playing four games, two at home and two away. The winners, runners-up and third-placed teams from each section advance to the last 32 where they are joined by the eight third-placed clubs from the UEFA Champions League. Here, the traditional two-match knockout format resumes, until the final. The dates for the games are as follows: the Round of 32 takes place on 13/14 and 21 February; Round of 16 on 6 and 12/13 March; quarter-finals on 3 and 10 April; semi-finals on 24 April and 1 May. The 2007/08 UEFA Cup final will be held at the City of Manchester Stadium on 14 May.

: For matches played under the cup (knockout) system, the team which scores the greater aggregate of goals in the two matches qualifies for the next round. If the two teams involved in a tie score the same number of goals over the two legs, the team which scores more away goals qualifies for the next stage. If this procedure does not produce a result, i.e, if the two teams score the same number of goals at home and away, extra time of two periods of 15 minutes shall be played at the end of the second leg. If during extra time, both teams score the same number of goals, away goals count double (i.e. the visiting club qualifies). If no goals are scored during extra time, penalty kicks determine which team qualifies.

• Player registration: UEFA regulations state that for all UEFA Cup matches from the start of the Round of 32, a club may register a maximum of three new eligible players within their squad of 25 for the remaining matches in the current competition. Such registration must be completed by 1 February at the latest. One player from the above quota of three who has played UEFA club competition matches for another competing club in the current season may exceptionally be registered, provided that the player has not been fielded by another club in the UEFA Cup this season.
