Advocacy and Witness staff members work closely in coalitions with other organizations which share our values, as well as local UU congregations, to be effective in this ministry internationally, nationally, and in state and local efforts. -

Exploring Boston’s Religious History It is impossible to understand Boston without knowing something about its religious past. The city was founded in 1630 by settlers from England, Other Historical Destinations in popularly known as Puritans, Downtown Boston who wished to build a model Christian community. Their “city on a hill,” as Governor Old South Church Granary Burying Ground John Winthrop so memorably 645 Boylston Street Tremont Street, next to Park Street put it, was to be an example to On the corner of Dartmouth and Church, all the world. Central to this Boylston Streets Park Street T Stop goal was the establishment of Copley T Stop Burial Site of Samuel Adams and others independent local churches, in which all members had a voice New North Church (Now Saint Copp’s Hill Burying Ground and worship was simple and Stephen’s) Hull Street participatory. These Puritan 140 Hanover Street Haymarket and North Station T Stops religious ideals, which were Boston’s North End Burial Site of the Mathers later embodied in the Congregational churches, Site of Old North Church King’s Chapel Burying Ground shaped Boston’s early patterns (Second Church) Tremont Street, next to King’s Chapel of settlement and government, 2 North Square Government Center T Stop as well as its conflicts and Burial Site of John Cotton, John Winthrop controversies. Not many John Winthrop's Home Site and others original buildings remain, of Near 60 State Street course, but this tour of Boston’s “old downtown” will take you to sites important to the story of American Congregationalists, to their religious neighbors, and to one (617) 523-0470 of the nation’s oldest and most www.CongregationalLibrary.org intriguing cities. -

The time-frame has been selected for two reasons: (1) actresses active after 1870 have been the subject of several dissertations and scholarly studies, while relatively little research has been completed on women active on the American stage prior to 1870, and (2) prior to 1850 there was limited theatre activity in this country and very few professional actresses. A general description of mid-nineteenth-century theatre and its social context is provided, including a summary of major developments in theatre in New York and other cities from 1850 to 1870, discussions of the star system, the combination company, and the mid-century audience. -

The Base, the Bowl, and the Transforming, Dancing Flame Bellingham Unitarian Fellowship ~ www.buf.org Revs Paul Beckel and Barbara ten Hove November 24, 2019 Gathering Hymns #349 We Gather Together #21 For the Beauty of the Earth Welcome - Paul We’ve been speaking throughout November about different aspects of memory. Today we’ll be considering a way to organize our memories in such a way as to give them deeper meaning than nostalgia or regret. A way to recognize the patterns that have shaped our understandings of what grounds us, holds us, and warms us even through our ongoing, sometimes chaotic, personal transformations. This morning, I am joined by Rev. Dr. Barbara Wells ten Hove. Many recognize Barbara as a BUF member who sings in our choir; she is also a retired minister with long service to our faith tradition. Last year she served as Consulting Minister at the North Shore Unitarian Church in West Vancouver, BC and before that she and her husband Jaco (also a stalwart choir member) retired as Emeritus Ministers of Cedars UU Church on Bainbridge Island. Barbara has taught courses, primarily on worship, at churches and seminaries throughout the US and Canada. I have invited Barbara to help me to develop a program this coming winter for training and support of celebrants, who assist in leading Sunday services. History of the Flaming Chalice
The History of the Flaming Chalice The flaming chalice is the symbol of our denomination. The chalice and the flame were brought together as a Unitarian symbol by an Austrian artist, Hans Deutsch, in 1941. Living in Paris during the 1930’s Deutsch drew critical cartoons of Adolf Hitler. When the Nazis invaded Paris in 1940, he fled to the South of France, then to Spain, and finally, with an altered passport, into Portugal. In Lisbon, he met the Reverend Charles Joy, executive director of the Unitarian Service Committee (USC), newly founded in Boston to assist Eastern Europeans, among them Unitarians as well as Jews, trying to escape Nazi persecution. Rev. Joy oversaw a secret network of couriers and agents. He wanted the new organization to have a visual image to represent Unitarianism, especially when dealing with government agencies abroad. Deutsch was impressed and soon was working for the USC. He wrote to Joy: “There is something that urges me to tell you… how much I admire your utter self-denial [and] readiness to serve, to sacrifice all, your time, your health, your well-being, to help, help, help. “I am not what you may actually call a believer. But if your kind of life is the profession of your faith—as it is, I feel sure—then religion, ceasing to be magic and mysticism, becomes confession to practical philosophy and—what is more – to active, really useful social work. And this religion—with or without a heading—is one to which even a `godless’ fellow like me can say wholeheartedly, Yes!” The USC was an unknown organization in 1941, a handicap in the cloak-and-dagger world, where establishing trust quickly across barriers of language, nationality, and faith could mean life instead of death. -
Consultation on Ministry to and with Youth
Consultation on Ministry To and With Youth Summary Report August 2007 Greetings! Since October 2004, when the UUA Board of Trustees called for the Consultation on Ministry To and With Youth, we have engaged thousands of Unitarian Universalists. Youth have dialogued with their peers and in intergenerational groups about their hopes for youth ministry. Surveys, congregational conversations, district gatherings, and conversations with numerous stakeholders and UU communities have taken place. The key findings gathered in these steps are included in this packet. As the Task Force on Youth Ministry met, worked closely with districts and stakeholders across the Association, and designed the Summit on Youth Ministry, we consistently revisited our visions for youth ministry and sought to incorporate what we learned from the wisdom of Unitarian Universalists throughout the Association. These visions have continued to shape our thinking and were crucial to the Summit on Youth Ministry. We would like to share them with you here: Strong and healthy youth self-identity: Communities encourage youth to explore and develop their faith and to grow spiritually. Love and sharing among youth and adults: Congregations are intergenerational communities that play important roles in the lives of youth. Sense of belonging, freedom, and responsibility: Youth are welcomed, supported, and given a voice in their congregations and in the Association. Youth are in community with their peers and integrated in Unitarian Universalist communities. Adults and youth practice forgiveness and learn from their mistakes as well as from each other. Purpose and choice: Youth are able to fundamentally transform congregations and the larger world by practicing and living out their faith. -

Older structures are being renovated or destroyed, while extensive new building is simultaneously under way. Documenting these changes involves identifying and preserving the records of build- ings that are disappearing as well as those of new construction. The author reviews briefly the history of architecture in New England, focusing on its relationship to the evolution of types of documentation in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries: original design records, publications and stock plans, and visual records of completed buildings and their changes over time. The differing approaches of the six states to preserving these records are profiled, and their efforts linked with the growth of an active historic preservation movement. Aspects of the built environment remain less well documented: current development, commercial architecture, landscape design, builders' records, and owner-initiated projects. The author concludes by proposing regional efforts to deal with these issues, capitalizing upon the expertise and experience of the curators, archivists, and conservators of New England's architectural collections. About the author: Nancy Carlson Schrock is self-employed as a book conservator and consultant on library preservation in Winchester, Massachusetts. During 1979-82, she served as project di- rector for NHPRC- and NEH-sponsored surveys of architectural records, which culminated in publication of Mass COPAR's Architectural Records in Boston. -
UUCP Ministers
UUCP Ministers Lon Ray Call Organizing minister 1946 to 1947 Lon Ray Call was our organizing minister. He was the American Unitarian Association's minister-at-large. Born in Advance, North Carolina, Call trained as a Baptist, entered the Unitarian ministry in 1923 and served churches in Louisville, Kentucky; New York City, and Braintree, Massachusetts before entering denominational work in 1933 and becoming minister-at-large in 1941. During the decade he served in that position, he personally founded thirteen churches. The fellowship program he conceived and initiated in 1947 resulted in the formation of 216 lay-led religious societies in its first decade. The First Unitarian Church of Phoenix arose out a relationship between Rev. Call and a woman he had first met when both lived in the Midwest, Isabelle Johnson. Laurence Plank Sept 1947 to Aug 1949 The Rev. Laurence Plank was called to be the first settled minister of the new church in March 1947. He was born in Sauk Center, Minnesota, attended Minnesota and North Dakota universities and received a masters degree from Columbia University in New York. He had served churches in Duluth, Minnesota; Dayton, Ohio, Rochester, New York, Omaha, Nebraska and St. Louis. He was an eloquent speaker and attracted many people to the church. He was instrumental in establishing a Sunday evening inter-racial discussion group at the YWCA.that may have influenced the Arizona legislature by constitutional amendment to desegregate Arizona Schools. He was a Theist but left the ministry in 1949 to write and to marry the former pianist at the church.
