He was re­ search officer-in-charge of the Oil Palm Research Centre at Kade, Ghana from 1964 to 1971 and head of the Coffee Breeding Unit at the Coffee Research Sta­ tion near Ruiru, Kenya, from 1971 to 1981. He obtained his PhD degree from Wageningen Agricultural University in 1974 with a thesis on breeding and quantitative genetics in the oil palm. In 1981 he joined Sluis & Groot Seed Company at Enkhuizen (Netherlands) as research manager and subsequently became director of the breeding programmes for vegetable and flower seed crops. After early retirement in 1993 he went overseas once more as seed in­ dustry adviser to the Ministry ofAgricultur e in Dhaka, Bangladesh until 1996. Since that time he has been active as a freelance consultant in plant breeding, and has undertaken assignments concerning vegetable seeds, cereal crops, co­ coa, oil palm and coffee. He has published over 40 scientific papers and written a chapter on breeding in two handbooks on coffee, contributed as co-author and associate editor of PROSEA No 8 Vegetables and as co-author and co-editor of PROSEA No 16 Stimulants. DR B.E. UMALI graduated from the University of the Philippines Los Banos (UPLB) in 1975 with a BSc degree in agriculture (major in horticulture).

    Plant Formations in the Philippinean BioProvince Peter Martin Rhind Philippinean Dipterocarp Forest Forests dominated by dipterocarps are characteristic of the lowlands and up to an altitude of about 600 m. Prior to man’s interventions they represented about 75% of the virgin forest area and contained about 95% of the archipelago’s standing timber. The dominant dipterocarps are Parashorea malaanonan, Pentacme contorta and Shorea guisa and these together with trees such as the endemic Canarium luzonicum (Burseraceae) and Celtis philippensis (Ulmaceae) form a closed canopy. The tallest of these trees, Parashorea malaanonan, can reach heights of 40 m. Two sub-canopy layers can usually be distinguised. In the middle layer, at about 20 m high, Diospyros ahernii, Diplodiscus paniculatus and the endemic Dillenia philippinensis (Dilleniaceae) and Strombosia philippinensis (Olacaceae) represent some of the more prominent trees, but this layer probably contains a greater number of species than the other two stories combined. The third storey reaches about 10 m. Here the main species include Laportea subclausa, Thea montana and the endemic Leea manillensis (Leeaceae). Other endemic trees include Dillenia reifferscheidia (Dilleniaceae), Dipterocarpus philippinensis, Hopea acuminata, Shorea astlosa, Vatica pachyphylla (Dipterocarpaceae), Eugenia luzonensis (Myrtaceae), Gloeocarpus patentivalis (Sapindaceae), Guioa discolor (Sapindaceae), Hydnocarpus cauliflora (Flacourtiaceae), Leea philippinensis (Leeaceae), Mastixia tetrapetala (Mastixiaceae), Myristica

This paper reports the discovery of Mitrastemon yamamotoi from Mt. Malambo, Mindanao, Philippines. Mitrastemonaceae is revealed to be a new family record for the Philippines. The Metropolitan Ilocos Norte Watershed Forest Reserve (MINWFR) is among the remaining intact limestone formations and a critical protected area in northwestern Luzon. There have been few published floristic studies despite its undeniable rich biological importance. Therefore, this paper primarily aims to provide a preliminary checklist of vascular plants in MINWFR and their conservation status. Consequent field visits and surveys were made from April 2019 to March 2020. Results revealed a total of 173 species distributed in 140 genera belonging to 59 families. The most represented families are Rubiaceae, Fabaceae, Orchidaceae, and Malvaceae.
