Before the advent of colonial rule and Western Civilization per se, the Igbo had existed with full civilization. It is a familiar expression that language is found in culture and culture is found in language, and it is these distinct cultural and linguistic features that distinguish the Igbo as one of the progenitors of African civilization. The origin and evolution of the Igbo language and culture over the generations can be problematic if it does not take cognizance of the periodization from the age of oralness to the period the language was reduced into writing. The material for this study involves both primary and secondary sources. Studies have shown that an in-depth study of the origin and evolution of languages and culture over the generations could go a long way to ameliorate the unfair treatment given to most of the endangered languages of the world. This study engages itself with the task of making an inroad in the terrain of historical linguistics, since the study of the origin and evolution of language and culture could bring enough confirmations that remote ancestors of the Igbo were among the autochthonous peoples that fathered the civilization of Africa. -

First, the place of writing among the various systems of human inter communication is discussed. This is followed by four Tchapters devoted to the descriptive and comparative treatment of the various types of writing in the world. The sixth chapter deals with the evolution of writing from the earliest stages of picture writing to a full alphabet. The next four chapters deal with general problems, such as the future of writing and the relationship of writing to speech, art, and religion. Of the two final chapters, one contains the first attempt to establish a full terminology of writing, the other an extensive bibliography. The aim of this study is to lay a foundation for a new science of writing which might be called grammatology. While the general histories of writing treat individual writings mainly from a descriptive-historical point of view, the new science attempts to establish general principles governing the use and evolution of writing on a comparative-typological basis. -

THE TRANSLATION OF KRISTOS AS KRISTO IN THE DANGME MOTHER TONGUE TRANSLATION OF THE NEW TESTAMENT VISITED Kuwornu-Adjaottor Jonathan E. T Abstract The writer contends that Greek word Kristos should be translated and spelt Klisto in the Dangme New Testament because the Dangme orthography has no “r;” the nearest in sound is “l.” Comparing the way New Testament is generally taught with the methodology used at three institutions in Ghana, and the results the usage of such a methodology, it is being recommended that New Testament Greek in Ghana/Africa should be taught with the Greek New Testament and the mother-tongue translations of the New Testament. This will allay the fears of students who get scared at the start of the study of New Testament Greek, and motivate them to get interest in the discipline from the unset. Further, it will help students to apply what they learn to their study of the New Testament as a whole. Key words: Kristos, Klristo, Klisto, Dangme orthography, Dangme mother-tongue translation of the New Testament. Introduction The word Christ appears in English and most European languages. It is derived from the Greek Kristos, transcribed in Latin as Christus in the New Testament to describe Jesus. Christ is now often used as a name, one part of the name “Jesus,” but is actually a title, the Messiah. Its usage “Christ Jesus” emphasises its nature as a title (Doniger, 1999: 212; Pannenberg, 1977: 30-31). In the Septuagint (LXX) version of the Hebrew Bible, the word Kristos is used to translate the Hebrew mashiach, Messiah, meaning “anointed” (Zanzig, 1999: 314; Etynonline, 2013). -

Many of the papers dwelt on the image and role of women in contemporary African literature with, of course, particular attention to their inscriptions in Achebe's fiction. We felt, however, that the images of women as they have been presented by both African men and women writers and critics would benefit from being complement ed, fragmented and tested and that a useful, albeit complex, site for this inquiry could be West African oral representations of the female. -

Most existing theories of civil war focus on rebels’ motivation and capabilities, while taking government’s actions as givens. Not only is the government a key player in the process leading up to civil war, but it is also a non-unitary actor composed of individuals and groups with diverging aspirations. Thus, understanding civil war requires an explanation of the conditions that facilitate or impede what governments do to provide political order. To fill this gap, this dissertation proposes a state-centered theory that explains civil war as an indirect function of state environment, defined in terms of structural and institutional conditions under which governments operate. The argument is that state environment determines the scope of leaders’ consensus on accommodation and coercion, two strategies that governments rely on to provide political order. Specifically, harsh socioeconomic conditions reduce leaders’ strategic consensus. Moreover, leaders’ divisions in socioeconomically poor societies are further exacerbated by democratic institutions. In turn, the lack of consensus on accommodation and coercion increases the risks of civil war. Quantitative and qualitative methods are used to test the theory. The quantitative analysis relies on mediation techniques and on a cross-sectional time series of 162 countries from 1960 to 2007. -

Based on this, this paper explored socio-cultural relationships as they influence the management of communication patterns Africa. With special focus on African linguistic images, the paper analyzed the relationships between African linguistic images and the communicative powers of language, graphic systems, and the written word. Language is a means which human beings have devised for communicating ideas, feelings, emotions, desires, etc, through complex vocal or written symbols; hence, images play a central role in the complex communications that both link and separate communities and institutions. From these developed the first pictograms (pictorial symbols for words or phrases), which then led to fully fledged picture writing systems (Hoffmann, 2002). -

A conversation during that trip with Professor Kwesi Yankah changed the course of my research. He suggested a potential research project on adinkra. With adinkra everywhere in Ghana today, research possibilities seemed endless. Adinkra appealed to me from my interest in studying Akan visual and verbal arts, a research area nurtured during an ethnopoetics course that Professor Yankah taught as a visiting scholar at Michigan in 2011. That conversation led to this project. Soon after that meeting with Professor Yankah, I took an exploratory research trip to Kumasi. Professor Gilbert Amegatcher, who has a wealth of knowledge about Akan arts and culture, traveled with me. He paved the way for this dissertation, making key introductions to adinkra cloth makers who I continued to work with during subsequent visits, especially the Boadum and Boakye families. Madueke, 2018 ii Abstract This project focuses on the history and process of translating and publishing selected Anglophone Nigerian novels into French, with a special focus on elements of hybridity. The corpus consists of novels written by canonical and non-canonical, male and female Nigerian authors in the years after the country’s independence in 1960. The thesis draws on multiple yet complementary translation methodologies. The polysystem theory (PST) is used to characterize the source literary system and how certain home factors may reflect on the selection of works for translation. The polysystem is also useful to position Nigerian literature within the French literary system. André Lefevere’s methodology is used to identify the agents involved in the translation of the novels and examine power relationships at play. Antoine Berman’s approaches allow for a study of the French translators’ roles and a microanalysis of hybridity. Interviews, questionnaires, email and oral exchanges provide first-hand information and complement previous approaches. A qualitative analysis of data gathered in this study was performed in order to illustrate the various trends within the corpus of Nigerian literary works translated in French. This corpus forms an online database, NILIFT, which will be useful for future research. -

Abstract This thesis calls into question the silently-held presumption that the Latinization (i.e. the use of Latin alphabets in transcription) of indigenous languages in southeastern Nigeria is both necessary and sufficient for their orthography. The arguments presented herein aim to demonstrate the fact that Latinization has systematically excluded an entire realm of symbols and meanings which facilitate the inter-subjective transfer of ideas; realms that cannot always be navigated by relying upon transcription by way of Latin alphabets. In order to adequately address several of the weaknesses identified in the Latinized scripts, the thesis will argue for an expanded orthography that is more inclusive and representative of the sociofacts, mentifacts and artifacts that are peculiar to southeastern Nigeria.
