Madueke, 2018 ii Abstract This project focuses on the history and process of translating and publishing selected Anglophone Nigerian novels into French, with a special focus on elements of hybridity. The corpus consists of novels written by canonical and non-canonical, male and female Nigerian authors in the years after the country’s independence in 1960. The thesis draws on multiple yet complementary translation methodologies. The polysystem theory (PST) is used to characterize the source literary system and how certain home factors may reflect on the selection of works for translation. The polysystem is also useful to position Nigerian literature within the French literary system. André Lefevere’s methodology is used to identify the agents involved in the translation of the novels and examine power relationships at play. Antoine Berman’s approaches allow for a study of the French translators’ roles and a microanalysis of hybridity. Interviews, questionnaires, email and oral exchanges provide first-hand information and complement previous approaches. A qualitative analysis of data gathered in this study was performed in order to illustrate the various trends within the corpus of Nigerian literary works translated in French. This corpus forms an online database, NILIFT, which will be useful for future research. While the field of Nigerian literature in French translation shows visible growth and progress, this study illustrates that internal ethnic divides within the source cultures, resulting in the predilection of certain types of literature, influence the visibility of certain works or authors in Nigeria and in French translation. The absence of agents, policies and subsidies for the promotion of translation in Nigeria reinforces the target-oriented nature of the process. French publishers decide which works are translated based on the author’s international literary reputation. Even though some publishers have introduced more Nigerian literary works in the target culture through special collections devoted to African Anglophone literature, this research shows that Nigerian literature as part of the general Anglophone literature, continues to occupy a peripheral position in the French literary polysystem. The textual and paratextual analyses of the selected translated texts show that French translators strive to respect the hybrid elements in the original texts. iii Preface This thesis is an original work by Sylvia Madueke. Stetz Department of Women and Gender Studies, University of Delaware 34 West Delaware Avenue Newark, DE 19716, USA E-mail: [email protected]; [email protected] Abstract: Given the long history of prejudice against clothing as a serious subject of scholarly analysis, dress has remained insufficiently explored in literary criticism as a feature of the bildungsroman, or the coming-of-age fictional narrative. Choice of dress has been, however, a crucial element in the establishment of identity and in the process of maturation, particularly in narratives about girls and most especially in late-twentieth and early-twenty-first-century works about girls of color. This essay examines the role of dress in three representative texts by women of color—one Australian, one Afro-British, and one Chicana. Keywords: dress; fashion; coming-of-age narratives; bildungsroman; girls of color; identity formation What happens when we focus on the intersection of two subjects that traditionally have been considered of lower status in many academic settings—i.e., girlhood and clothes? These two topics may long have attracted interest among popular audiences, but when it comes to literary criticism, in particular, they are only now beginning to accrue prestige, or what is often called “cultural capital.” They have been long neglected, in particular, in the very place where they might have been expected: studies of the bildungsroman, which tracks the progress over time of an individual fictional protagonist. Conventional discussions of maturation in coming-of-age narratives, and conventional formulations of that genre, have mainly reflected masculine notions of development, pivoting on what Maureen Corrigan describes as episodes of “male extreme adventure”—i.e., “a one-shot testosterone expenditure of physical courage that pits man against nature/man/himself, with man (the narrator usually) left standing, bloody but unbowed” (Corrigan 2005, 5).

    Do Books Cause Revolutions? An Empirical Test of Robert Darnton’s The Forbidden Best-Sellers of Pre-Revolutionary France* Yu Sasaki† This version: March 22, 2020 Preliminary; comments welcome Abstract This article is the first empirical test of Robert Darnton (1995)’s thesis that illegal books clandes- tinely circulated contributed to the French Revolution. The provocative argument has spawned a vibrant industry in historical research but quantitative studies have not been offered. I do so by constructing a new data set that digitizes all 720 illegal works in Darnton’s published corpus. Using the number of émigrés and deaths sentences as my proxies for the Revolution, I show that the diffusion of illegal books has a positive and significant impact on nobles and clergy- men who fled from France but not those who received death sentences. My findings are robust to a host of covariates that could determine diffusion and the two revolutionary outcomes. My analysis implies that an information revolution in which technological progress allows for a fast and inexpensive transmission of information could facilitate a political revolution. *I thank Takayuki Kubouchi for his able research assistance. These symbols of expression are collectively called àdìǹkrá. There are related symbols of oral orientation that seem to play the same role as àdìǹkrá. In this paper, we explore the àdìǹkrá symbols and the related ones, the individual messages they en- code and their significance in the Akan society. It is explained that most of these symbols are inspired on creation and man-made objects. Some others are also proverb-based. The àdìǹkrá symbols in par- ticular constitute a medium of objective and deep-seated socio-cultural knowledge of the Akan people. We contend that, like words and actions, the symbols represent and send various distinctive messag- es that are indisputably accepted by people who know them. Their authors are engaged in a lively dialogue with their literary precursors, male and female, using their interpretation of the past. Though realism is their preferred mode, it is a realism that bears the trace of pre-existing non-realist modes of expression and belief. By reclaiming the traditionally negative icon of the abiku child, they effect a retrieval of the feminine repressed, casting the feminine double as shadow or negative to the paradigmatic male protagonist of Nigerian fiction and reinserting it into the postcolonial national narrative. Like one of the protagonists, these novels ask the urgent question: “What was the country I loved? The country I would fight for? Before the advent of colonial rule and Western Civilization per se, the Igbo had existed with full civilization. It is a familiar expression that language is found in culture and culture is found in language, and it is these distinct cultural and linguistic features that distinguish the Igbo as one of the progenitors of African civilization. The origin and evolution of the Igbo language and culture over the generations can be problematic if it does not take cognizance of the periodization from the age of oralness to the period the language was reduced into writing. Studies have shown that an in-depth study of the origin and evolution of languages and culture over the generations could go a long way to ameliorate the unfair treatment given to most of the endangered languages of the world. This study engages itself with the task of making an inroad in the terrain of historical linguistics, since the study of the origin and evolution of language and culture could bring enough confirmations that remote ancestors of the Igbo were among the autochthonous peoples that fathered the civilization of Africa.
