Nearly a year ago, when the Common Room was started in the new buildings of the Theological Hall, it was suggested that it was desirable in con- nection with it to draw up a record of all those who have been trained for Holy Orders under Miss Panton’s Trust. In this small volume, therefore, an endeavour is made to give a list and trace the career of all those who have studied under the Pantonian Professor for the required time. Con- siderable difficulty has been experienced in obtain- ing satisfactory and complete information about all, as no full record has hitherto been kept. It is to be hoped, however, that the next issue will be more full and correct, as it is desired that any misstatements now appearing will be remedied by information from those who peruse this copy. A letter appeared in the Scottish Guardian re- questing information respecting any who studied previously to the settlement at Glenalmond. In reply to this, Canon Bruce of Dunimarle kindly 11 wrote informing us both as to what time and under whom he studied. Again it is to be hoped that, before another issue of this record, this portion will be more complete, for an acquaintance with the fortunes of those who studied at that time would be a distinct gain. -
The Medieval Parish in Scotland
The Medieval Parish in Scotland Simon Taylor University of Glasgow This article is based on a paper I gave to the conference ‘Scottish Society and the Parish’, held in Stirling Tolbooth, Stirling, on 24 November 2010, organised by the Scottish Records Association and the Economic & Social History Society of Scotland to mark the 450th anniversary of the Reformation in Scotland. It explores the emergence of the parish in our earliest records, as well as its ‘territoriality’, looking at how it took on the spatial extent that it did, how that area evolved over the centuries, and how far earlier parochial footprints can still be traced in the modern landscape and place-names. This very much reflects my own interests, as well as the work of the ‘Mapping of the Historical Parishes of Scotland Group’,1 a small group which consists of representatives of NRS, RCAHMS and the Universities of the Highlands and Islands, Glasgow and Stirling. I will start by looking briefly at what we know of the early evolution of the Scottish parish as a legal and ecclesiastical entity, which will inevitably also be a historiographical survey of the subject. The real start of the serious study of the Scottish parish as a historical entity has to be the Origines Parochiales Scotiae, a splendid production overseen and edited by Cosmo Innes and James Brichan.2 Published by the Bannatyne Club between 1851 and 1855, it has the grand subtitle ‘The Antiquities Ecclesiastical and Territorial of the Parishes of Scotland’. I choose this as my starting point rather than the Statistical Accounts of Scotland, the first of which appeared in the 1790s, now known as the Old Statistical Account. -

ABSTRACT Wordsworth is a mythopoeic or mythmaking poet. While the fell-sides, sheep-folds, and mountain roads of Cumberland-Westmorland provide an external reality in which his dramas can unfold, and while the shepherds, fell-folk, and travellers offer him the dramatis personae to people this natural stage, the drama is also, and perhaps even moreso, an inner psychological ritual played upon the stage of Wordsworth's psyche, and the actors are just as much gods and goddesses and titans, represent ing the psychic forces which come into play in the various stages of his spiritual progress, as they are people. If one is to see this drama clearly, then, one must adjust one's eyesight as well to the dark inner land scape of the psyche in order to realize the full scope and quality of Wordsworth's pastoral. As he plainly warns us in the Preface to the 1814 Excursion, we must look Into our Minds, into the Mind of Man- My haunt, and the main region of my song. Those people who, by their own unwitting habit, see only the outer landscape--the outer light of consciousness is so bright that they fail to see the shadows--will have only a one-dimensional view of his poetry, for, like all Titans, Wordsworth is a creature of the caves and mountain bases, ii and a good portion of him is inside and underground. -

Galperin This study examines the ways in which nineteenth-century readers experienced Wordsworth’s poetry as wisdom literature—ways of reading the poetry which have been largely lost in the twenty-first century. Considered as disciples, these men and women of letters had lifelong relationships with the poet and poetry which paralleled Wordsworth’s own ritual of returning to the text and to the consecrated place in nature. By examining the reading practices of these Wordsworthians in the light of interpretive methods dating back to monastic readers, I show how such practices went hand in glove with the poet’s epitaphic aesthetic. Wordsworth’s theory of poetry derives from his “Essays Upon Epitaphs” which privilege the sympathetic relationship of the epitaph writer to the deceased and to the mourning survivors. I trace the evolution of this aesthetic in Wordsworth’s poetry through his autobiographical poem, The Prelude, considered as the poet’s own epitaph, and through his turn to the frugality and rigid lines of the sonnet as the form most conducive to fulfilling his prophetic duty in later years. -

PhD Thesis Abstract 2003 Deacon William Palmer of Magdalen was unique among those connected with the Oxford Movement in that he travelled to Russia seeking communion from the· Russian Orthodox Church, on the basis that the Church of England could rightly claim to be part of the one Holy, Catholic & Apostolic Church. Derided by the expatriate English in Russia as an 'ass', a Madman', and 'a strange enthusiast', he was nonetheless highly respected by the Russians themselves as 'an excellent defender of a bad cause.' Rejecting with incredulity his representations on behalf of the Church of England, the Russians urged him instead to accept Orthodoxy without qualification or question.
