GILES’ PRINTING COMPANY, 32 YORK PLACE. V ■n S22 ■ . ‘t •7 o. 19 7 , A n PREFACE. Nearly a year ago, when the Common Room was started in the new buildings of the Theological Hall, it was suggested that it was desirable in con- nection with it to draw up a record of all those who have been trained for Holy Orders under Miss Panton’s Trust. In this small volume, therefore, an endeavour is made to give a list and trace the career of all those who have studied under the Pantonian Professor for the required time. Con- siderable difficulty has been experienced in obtain- ing satisfactory and complete information about all, as no full record has hitherto been kept. It is to be hoped, however, that the next issue will be more full and correct, as it is desired that any misstatements now appearing will be remedied by information from those who peruse this copy. A letter appeared in the Scottish Guardian re- questing information respecting any who studied previously to the settlement at Glenalmond. In reply to this, Canon Bruce of Dunimarle kindly 11 wrote informing us both as to what time and under whom he studied. Again it is to be hoped that, before another issue of this record, this portion will be more complete, for an acquaintance with the fortunes of those who studied at that time would be a distinct gain. In drawing up this register, many facts have come before our notice, which may interest some, and which tend to show that although the College exists primarily for the purpose of providing Scotch clergy for the Scotch Church, yet a large percent- age of her alumni are working in various parts of the kingdom, and some beyond the seas. From the settlement at Glenalmond to the pre- sent time, 140 students have completed their course under the Pantonian Professor. Twice in the his- tory of the College there have been no students entered for fully two years, viz., 1858-1860 and 1873-1875. Of the 140, 20 have gone to their rest, and of the remaining 120, no less than 30 are at present working in England, 2 are in Australia, 1 in Burmah, 1 in Canada. Of the 30 who are in England, 1 is an Assistant-Bishop, 1 a Canon, 14 Rectors or Vicars, while the remainder are unbene- ficed. Of those who have remained in Scotland, there have been 3 appointed to Deaneries, this Ill being the highest ecclesiastical dignity to which an alumnus has been raised in his own country. Of the 6 recorded as having studied previously to the Glenalmond settlement, 4 have been appointed to Deaneries, 2 of whom are still at work. Considerable aid has been afforded in this under- taking by many of the clergy, and also by W. W. Farquharson, Esq., to whom the Common Room hereby offer their sincere thanks. Especially are such due to Canon Wilson, who, midst the pressure of other work, kindly looked over and corrected the proofs. D. MOIR, Steward of Common Room. 15th June, 1892.
