Reis2 The genus Ixinandria was described in 1979 to include I. steinbachi from the upper río Juramento in northern Argentina and I. montebelloi from the upper río Bermejo in southern Bolivia. We used a multivariate morphometric analysis (Principal Components Analysis) and a molecular comparison of the Cytochrome Oxidase I gene to investigate variation among distinct populations from the known distribution range of both species. We conclude that the populations are not significantly distinct and do not deserve separate species recognition, and we place I. montebelloi in the synonymy of I. steinbachi. O gênero Ixinandria foi descrito em 1979 para incluir I. steinbachi do alto rio Juramento no norte da Argentina e I. montebelloi do alto rio Bermejo no sul da Bolívia. Utilizamos análise morfométrica multivarida (Análise de Componentes Principais) e uma comparação molecular do gene Citocromo Oxidase I para investigar a variação entre populações distintas da área de distribuição de ambas as espécies. Concluímos que as populações não são significativamente distintas e não merecem reconhecimento como espécies separadas, e colocamos Ixinandria montebelloi na sinonímia de I. steinbachi. Lefebvre Masters of Science Ecology and Evolutionary Biology University of Toronto 2014 Abstract The suckermouth armoured catfishes (Siluriformes: Loricariidae) are a diverse group of predominantly detritivorous fishes inhabiting rivers of South and Central America. Their distinct jaws are specialized for scraping a wide range of substrate. Though it is hypothesized that specialization of loricariid feeding morphology may have played a role in their diversification, little is known about the ecological and evolutionary processes involved. The present study quantifies variation in jaw functional traits and body morphology in a phylogenetic context. Morphological variation was compared to species’ relative position in assemblage isotope space (for both δ13C and δ15N) to test for correlations between diet and feeding morphology. Results show that although jaw functional traits are decoupled from body morphology, both are correlated with δ13C values. Partitioning of terrestrial and aquatic resources can be explained by both jaw functional traits and body morphology, however further partitioning of diet is only attributed to the former. ii Acknowledgements I would like to thank Nathan K. Para abordar esta tematica´ se ha elegido estudiar a cuatro generos´ de la familia Loricariidae de la cuenca del Plata. En este territorio se encuentra la mayor variedad de ambientes acuaticos´ y la mayor cantidad de especies de peces de Argentina, presentando un gran numero´ de endemismos. Sin embargo, los procesos evolutivos causales de esta gran riqueza biologica´ son aun´ poco conocidos y son escasas las hipotesis´ que actualmente dan cuenta de ella. Con el objetivo de comprender el origen de la diversificacion´ de especies dentro de la cuenca del Plata, se han realizado una serie de estudios filogeneticos´ de numerosos individuos de cuatro generos´ de la familia Loricariidae, Hypostomus, Loricariichthys, Rineloricaria y Ancistrus. Las filogenias moleculares basadas en marcadores mitocondriales y nucleares, y sobre datos con- catenados, han sido establecidas para cada grupo. Se utilizaron los arboles´ filogeneticos´ obtenidos para realizar la calibracion´ molecular y la reconstruccion´ de las areas´ ancestrales de cada genero.´ A partir de estos datos y de la distribucion´ actual de las especies, se evaluo´ una hipotesis´ que propone como causa de la diversificacion´ una incursion´ marina en la cuenca del Plata ocurrida hace 15-5 Ma.
