GENERAL ARTICLE Sapria Himalayana The Indian Cousin of World’s Largest Flower Dipankar Borah and Dipanjan Ghosh Sighting Sapria in the wild is a lifetime experience for a botanist. Because this rare, parasitic flowering plant is one of the lesser known and poorly understood taxa, which is on the brink of extinction. In India, Sapria is only found in the forests of Namdapha National Park in Arunachal Pradesh. In this article, an attempt has been made to document the diversity, distribution, ecology, and conservation need of this valuable plant. Dipankar Borah has just completed his MSc in Botany from Rajiv Gandhi Introduction University, Arunachal Pradesh, and is now pursuing research in the same It was the month of January 2017 when we decided for a field department. Amorphophallus titanum (titan arum) Frequently asked questions When was the plant first introduced to Europe? The plant was first introduced to the western world by Italian botanist Odoardo Beccari who found it on an expedition in 1878 and sent seeds & corms back to Italy, which were then shared with other Botanic Gardens. Where is Titan Arum found naturally? The Titan Arum is native to the rainforests of Sumatra, one of the largest islands of Indonesia. When did it first flower in cultivation? Plants were grown at selected gardens from the first seeds collected by Odoardo Beccari, and RBGE Kew successfully grew theirs to produce the first flower in cultivation in 1889. Does it have a common name? Amorphophallus is a scientific name, derived from Ancient Greek and means ‘misshapen penis’. The plant has different common names, including ‘titan arum’ and ‘corpse flower’. How old is this plant? The seed was sown at Hortus Botanicus Leiden (in the Netherlands) in 2002 and the resultant corm (a type of tuber) was gifted to RBGE in 2003, at the size of a small orange. That makes New Reekie around 17 years old! Is it edible? This species is not known to be edible, but corms of other Amorphophallus species are used as a food source. In this study, we evaluated the vegetative propagation of Amazonian native plants (Buchenavia parviflora, Euterpe oleracea, Ficus insipida and Socratea exorrhiza) with the addition of a bio-fertilizer, and humic and fulvic acids in soil disturbed by human-induced silting. We found that F. insipida and B. parviflora were able to grow and showed high survival percentage with the development of leaves, buds, and roots; even in nutrient deficient and clayey soils. We also found that the frequency of application and the concentration of the organic additives did not show significant influence on plants’ development. Thus, advance in situ tests with both species could be an interesting step to contribute to riverine ecosystems restoration practices. Karya terbaru filogenetik juga telah dieksplorasi (misalnya sejarah evolusi genus Rafflesia dan gigantisme, transfer horizontal gen dan hilangnya genom kloroplas) dan anatomi (misalnya endofit, pengembangan bunga); studi terbaru lainnya berfokus pada biokimia. Sayangnya, masih banyak informasi yang belum diketahui misalnya tentang siklus hidup, biologi dan hubungan ekologi pada Rafflesia. Kebanyakan informasi yang tersedia berasal dari hasil pengamatan. Misalnya penurunan populasi telah diketahui secara umum yang kadang kadang dikaitkan dengan kerusakan habitat atau gangguan alam tapi penyebab-penyebab yang lain tidak diketahui dengan pasti. Pertanyaan yang belum terjawab antara lain pada biologi reproduksi, struktur genetik populasi dan keragaman. Dengan adanya perubahan iklim secara global, kita amat membutuhkan studi populasi jangka panjang dalam kaitannya dengan parameter lingkungan untuk membantu konservasi Rafflesia. A recent field inventory of lowland Sumatran plant diversity was carried out in two close sites of forest patches in the Batang Toru area. These are Muara Upu Swamp Forest and Simulak Anjing Hill Forest. This study aimed to investigate the species composition of two isolated lowland Sumatran forest patches on the west coast of the northern part of the island. The total number of species recorded was 181 species with 131 species known from Simulak Anjing Hill Forest, 54 from Muara Upu Swamp Forest, and only three species recorded from both sites. There are three species endemic to Sumatra, seven species listed as threatened according to the IUCN Red List, one species protected by the Indonesian government, and two are important records for Sumatra.
