SWIMMING CHAMPIONSHIP Jo Ann Kanno HAWAIIAN AGE GROUP Indoor SWIMMING CHAMPIONSHIP Jo Ann Kanno Sponsored Wesley Ogata Hulali Solomon by the Hilo Aquatic Club Hilo High School Swimming Pool Hilo, Hawaii May 28, 29, 30, 31-1964 Hilo Aquatic Relay Team Sanctioned by the Hawaiian Assin, AAU Honolulu, Hawaii DEDICATION "Sparky" Kawamoto "Buster" Hons Dr. "Chuck" Ota As we proceed down life's highway. constantly beset with the worries and responsibilities of our daily lives, we are all too frequently inclined to overlook the unselfish and untiring efforts of others. To three such devoted men, the late F. C. - Buster Hons:' the late Dr. Charles "Chuck" Ota, and "Sparky" Kawamoto, we are dedicating this swimming meet and program. Both Buster and Chuck, past presidents of the Hilo Aquatic Club, and Sparky, veteran coach, were the major driving force in bringing the two previous Age-Group championships to Hilo. It was through their guidance that meets such as this were successful. Not only from the standpoint of any new records being established, but also in the challenge, comradeship and sportsmanship displayed by all concerned, have we been able to contribute toward helping to mold fine, young swimmers into outstanding citizens of the world. We are everlastingly grateful to Buster Hons, Dr. Chuck Ota and Sparky Kawamoto for the inspiration they have given us to continue the work they began. 3 Coach: THE HILO AQUATIC CLUB Eddie Kawachika COMMITTEE CHAIRMEN General Chairman MASANORI KUSHI Business Manager & Program Editor MASAYA MIYAO Finance RONALD TACHIBANA Correspondence ELOISE PUNG Assistants LILY INADA, MRS. You will also find the standings of the first three places in all events for men and women at the Olympic Games followed by several classifications which are listed either by the number of titles or medals by swimmer or National Federation. It should be noted that these standings only have an historical aim but no sport signification because the comparison between the achievements of swimmers of different generations is always unfair for several reasons: 1. The period of time. The Olympic Games were not organised in 1916, 1940 and 1944 2. The evolution of the programme.

  • George Haines, Swim Maestro: a Remembrance -- May 1, 2006 by Cecil Colwin
Reprinted with permission by world famous swim historian, Cecil Colwin. Many thanks, Mr. Colwin. Coach George Haines, Swim Maestro: A Remembrance -- May 1, 2006 By Cecil Colwin SACRAMENTO, Calif., May 1. THE World of Swimming is mourning Coach George Frederick Haines, foremost producer of Olympic champions in the history of competitive swimming. George Haines passed away in his sleep early on the morning of May 1, 2006, in Carmichael, California, four years after suffering the aftermath of a severe stroke. Between 1960 to l988, George Haines, coaching maestro of California's mighty Santa Clara Swim Team, produced a total of 53 Olympic swimmers who won 44 gold medals, 14 silver and 10 bronze medals. Enshrined with Haines in the International Swimming Hall of Fame are fifteen Santa Clara Club swimmers, more than from any other club. George Haines was three times Head Coach of the United States Olympic swimming team, and served on the support staff of four other Olympic squads. He was Head Coach of the United States team to the World Championships in West Berlin,1978, a team considered the most successful in United States Swimming history in terms of medals won. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Obituary George Frederick Haines Competitor, Educator, Coach, Patriot March 9, 1924--May 1, 2006 A Modest, Self-Effacing and Beloved Mentor George Haines was one of history's great swimming coaches, and one of the most charismatic, inspiring and beloved mentors to tread a pool deck. His chief attributes were a vast knowledge of the sport, a shrewd strategic sense, and an ability to motivate and produce both male and female champions.

  • Sharon Finneran Rittenhouse, May 2010
Page 1 Making Waves Out of the Blue : Sharing insights and positive perspectives about the sport of swimming from those that have lived the experience. By Cynthia Owens “I was just lucky that day.” That’s how Sharon Finneran Rittenhouse explains her philosophy about qualifying for the 1964 Rome Olympic team. Epitomizing good sportsmanship, grace, and humility, she went on to say that every single day, in the same pool, and frequently in the same lane, she trained with incredibly talented teammates who swam the same laps, stroke for stroke, day in and day out, that she did. Any of whom could have easily earned a berth on the Olympic team that year. But on the day of the 400 I.M. at Olympic Trials, it was Sharon’s turn. <- Sharon Finneran Rittenhouse and daughter, Ariel, Olympic diver, Beijing '08 She started swimming at age 10 in Florida. It became apparent that Sharon had talent in the water, so her family moved around the country seeking the best swimming program. She finally found her way to SCSC and George Haines. Her teammates were Donna de Varona, Terry Stickles and Don Schollander (to name a few Olympic greats). During her career, Sharon set 7 World Records in three different strokes, the 200 fly, the 800 free, and the 400 IM. She won 19 National Championships, won gold at the Pan American Games in 1963 in the 400 freestyle, and a silver at the Olympic Games in 1964 in the 400 IM. Sharon tells of a wonderful rivalry with Donna de Varona.

  • Xerox University Microfilms 300 North Zeeb Road Ann Arbor, Michigan 48106 75-23,153
INFORMATION TO USERS This material was produced from a microfilm copy of the original document. While the most advanced technological means to photograph and reproduce this document have been used, the quality is heavily dependent upon the quality of the original submitted. The following explanation of techniques is provided to help you understand markings or patterns which may appear on this reproduction. 1. The sign or "target" for pages apparently lacking from the document photographed is "Missing Page(s)". If it was possible to obtain the missing page(s) or section, they are spliced into the film along with adjacent pages. This may have necessitated cutting thru an image and duplicating adjacent pages to insure you complete continuity. 2. When an image on the film is obliterated with a large round black mark, it is an indication that the photographer suspected that the copy may have moved during exposure and thus cause a blurred image. You will find a good image of the page in the adjacent frame. 3. When a map, drawing or chart, etc., was part of the material being photographed the photographer followed a definite method in "sectioning" the material. It is customary to begin photoing at the upper left hand corner of a large sheet and to continue photoing from left to right in equal sections with a small overlap. Yi necessary, sectioning is continued again — beginning below the first row and continuing on until complete. 4. The majority of users indicate that the textual content is of greatest value, however, a somewhat higher quality reproduction could be made from "photographs" if essential to the understanding of the dissertation.
