Gender, Art, and Tools in Ancient Costa Rica 4 Breaking Down Binaries: Gender, Art, and Tools in Ancient Costa Rica Theresa Preston-Werner Northwestern University ABSTRACT Giant metate-like stone sculptures, found in all regions of Costa Rica, though in various forms, continue to fascinate researchers. Archaeologists contrast these sculptures with other, more utilitarian metates in order to determine their purpose and meaning. They create two groups—metates used by women for grinding subsistence foods and elaborate metates used by men for ritual purposes. This chapter challenges the binaries of tool/art, utilitarian/elaborate, and female/male that essentialize gender and homogenize historical variability. Figurine and burial data demonstrate women’s connection to elaborate metates and ritual. In addition, ceramic figurines depict flexibility in gender roles at least within the stratum of ancient Costa Rican society that they depicted. This instance of stereotyped gender attribution and the absence of attention to the possible dynamism of women’s lives shows the importance of a feminist approach to archaeology and the need to draw on multiple lines of evidence to answer archaeological questions. The intent of the replication was to ascertain ifdiffering results were achieved when various percussor types were used to re-roughen a metate-like surface. Ground stone products are seen as mundane static objects devoid of meaning and lacking significance. The aim of this thesis is to move away from incomplete accounts of ground stone technology and static typologies. Drawing upon the concepts of the chaine operatoire and 'object biographies' this thesis investigates ground stone technology as a social practice focusing on the life-cycle of artefacts from raw material selection to final deposition. The underlying premise is that a contextual approach can contribute to understanding the ways in which the production, consumption and discard of ground stone artefacts were structured within different forms and scales of social practice and the manner in which these differences articulated different meanings and social understandings. The aims of the thesis were materialised through the study of the rich ground stone assemblage from the LN settlement of Makriyalos, Greece. The analysis of the chaine operatoire of the Makriyalos ground stone assemblage revealed diverse technological choices expressed throughout the cycle of production and use. Established traditions existed according to which specific materials were considered to be appropriate for the production of different objects. Furthermore, detailed analysis suggests that the resulting objects were far from mundane artefacts but were instead active media for expressing choices informed by cultural understandings of appropriateness.

The number of flat and trough metates and two handed manos are compared to the rotary-motion basin and concave type metates and one-handed manos to determine predominance and distribution. Flat is the predominant type and, together with the trough type, these grinding stones make up the majority of metates at the site. Manos are highly fragmented, but the two-handed variety is more common among those fragments able to be identified.     The Nature of Prehistory In Colorado, mountains ascended past clouds and were eroded to valleys, salty seas flooded our land and were dried to powder or rested on us as freshwater ice, plants rose from wet algae to dry forests and flowers, animals transformed from a single cell to frantic dinosaurs and later, having rotated around a genetic rocket, into sly mammals. No human saw this until a time so very recent that we were the latest model of Homo sapiens and already isolated from much of the terror of that natural world by our human cultures' perceptual permutations and re­ flections. We people came late to Colorado. The first humans, in the over one hundred thousand square miles of what we now call Colorado, saw a landscape partitioned not by political fences or the orthogonal architecture of wall, floor, and roadway, but by gradations in game abundance, time to water, the supply of burnables, shelter from vagaries of atmosphere and spirit, and a pedestrian's rubric of distance and season. We people came as foragers and hunters to Colorado. We have lived here only for some one hundred fifty centuries-not a long time when compared to the fifty thousand centuries that the Euro­ pean, African, and Asian land masses have had us and our immediate prehuman ancestors.     Dormant Tectonics: Architectural Principles from a Metate Julian Maltby ARCH 624: Nora Wendl A metate isn’t made once. It’s made across time and on tables and floors. Its infinite pores, vestiges of magma’s dissolved gasses escaping and cooling rapidly, suggest the metate’s ontology but veil its truths. It is simultaneously rugged and soft, dense and elegant, impenetrable and exposed. Its scale immediately indicates human use and provokes a resolute sense of comfort in its minimalism. By staring at it one can hear it being used. The dark curves surrounding its rounded legs rest delicately on the surface below, careful not to bear its entire weight upon it. The metate is a movable ruin of the earth, and when you touch it your skin acknowledges its origins – born out of friction, pressure, and a bubbling geology whose cadence matches that of the universe’s own beginnings. Its uncomplaining nimbleness offers users a stoic model when our limbs weaken in its use. Wordlessly, it connects its handlers to the earth, to meals and conversations, to culture and motion, to tectonic plates and the big bang. It’s not hyperbolic to say that one can find the tracings of the origins of the universe in grinding corn on a piece of volcanic stone. Slightly hollowed, oblong stones on which foods such as corn and cacao are ground using a smaller stone called a mano, metates have been fundamental tools to various peoples throughout the Americas since before European settlement in the 15th century1. They are often carved out of a soft stone such as basaltic scoria (volcanic stone), and are known for their durability despite constant use– thousands of centuries and even millennia-old metates have been found throughout the Valley of Mexico, a testament to their longevity.
