Press Start Burden of Queer Love The Burden of Queer Love Brianna Dym University of Colorado Boulder Abstract Video games are a unique narrative and interactive experience that allow players to construct their own fantasies through play. The fantastical possibilities a video game could explore are nearly limitless. However, a game’s design often precludes certain imaginative routes, shutting down one fantasy in favour of another. Games close out possibilities through actions as small as character design (gender, race, ability) and restrict imaginative interpretations to serve a narrow audience. Game developers design play that prioritizes hypermasculine narrative experiences, and players that do not align with this identity must condition themselves to play that excludes fantasies or alternate worlds that align with their experiences. This essay explores attempts by game development studio BioWare to create video games that are inclusive of gay, lesbian, and bisexual players by writing queer romantic narrative subplots into their games. While BioWare’s attempts are certainly not malicious, they fail time and time again, game after game, to break free of the hypermasculine and heterocentric culture dominant in the gaming industry. Instead, BioWare appropriates queer experiences and construes them as a burden to the player so as not to displace the fantasies of male, heterosexual gamers. The Big Leagues By Phil Maiewski An adventure for 5-6 players for the from Background “The Big Leagues” takes place during the time covered by the computer game Star Wars: The Old Republic, or about 3,600 years before Episode IV: A New Hope. The characters portray the Companions of one of the four main heroes of the Republic (The Jedi Knight, the Jedi Consular, the Trooper, or the Smuggler). While the hero the PCs work with is called away by Jedi Grand Master Satele Shan, the Chancellor of the Republic suddenly calls the Hero’s ship looking to send them on an important mission for the Republic. Witht the Hero gone and time running out, the Chancellor elects to send the hero’s competently-skilled companions in hopes that they will be able to retrieve an agent with new information about an Imperial threat. After being undercover in Imperial space for two years, SIS Agent Galen uncovered another of the Empire’s many super-weapon programs. Gathering as much data as he could into his cybernetic data-stores, Galen called the SIS and requested immediate retrieval. It was determined that the closest planet he could get to that had sufficient Republic presence was Nar Shadda, so the meet-up was to occur there. Galen was able to reach Nar Shadda, but in his haste to escape from Imperial Agents that were looking for him he made a mistake. With the Empire hot on his heels, Galen made his way from the Spaceport to the Promenade district. While he was able to lose his pursuers in the crowds, Galen also made it incredibly difficult for anyone from the Republic to locate him. -
