West Greenland. - Herzogia 13: 199 - 206. 208 lichens and lichenicolous fungi arerecorded fromthree localities in Central West Greenland (Sisimiut, Kangaamiut and Maniitsoq). An account of selected floristic observations of particular interest is provided. Topography, geology and climate of the three areas are briefly treated.

Introduction A comprehensive survey of the previous lichenological research work in Central West Grenland has been given by K. HANSEN (1962). Vahl, Komerup, Rosenvinge and Fries all made important collections of lichens in the area between Disko and . Hartz and Jensen also collected lichens in this area in the l 9th century. In the pioneer work, "Gr0nlands Lichen-Flora", BRANTH & GR0NLUND (1888) mention most of the earliest findings of Greenland lichens. DANIELS ( 1994) has outlined the history of vegetation classification in Greenland. Scattered records of liehens from the studied areas were given by BöCHER (1954 and 1959) and ALSTRUP ( 1979, 1981, 1982 and 1986). With the intention of providing a survey of the liehen flora of Sisimiut, Kangaamiut and Maniitsoq the surroundings of the three towns were investigated in summer 1991. The eolleeted material, 970 liehen speeimens, is deposited at the Botanical Museum, University of Copenhagen.

A broad valley with a series of lakes extends from the town towards the east. The valley is flanked by the mountain Krellingehretten(775 m high) to the south and Prrestefjeldet (551 m) together with adjoining mountains to the north. The mountains are eomposed of Arehaean gneiss and are rieh in DOI: 10.1127/herzogia/13/1998/199
