  • Club Rugby - the Heart of the Union
Club Rugby - The Heart of the Union In the professional era, which has been increasingly dominant in the game since the mid 1990’s, one of rugby’s basic tenets has been inevitably undermined. That is the concept that Clubs, both on the field and off as community forces, are the foundation of the game and that their interests should be paramount. A provincial union after all, is essentially a collection of Clubs who are the game’s true owners. To its credit, since its formation in 1985, North Harbour has always striven to give Club rugby, from premier down to the Saturday morning junior grades, the recognition it deserves. And even in recent years, when All Blacks, Super 12/14 players and occasionally provincial representatives, no longer appear regularly for Clubs and for those few at elite level, never at all, that mantra has still applied. A special promotion has always been made of Club finals day. As well as the premier final, plate and pool playoffs have also been held and either as curtain-raisers or on adjacent grounds, the finals have generally held for reserves, under 21 and under 19 grades. With most of the union’s Clubs involved, crowds, firstly at Onewa Domain and since 1997 at Albany, have occasionally approached five to six thousand. There was a slight variation to the programmes in 2009, with the premier grade championship and plate-finals being the only two games played because of the need to fit in with the start of the Air New Zealand Cup. There was still a bumper attendance at Albany and the union, again to its credit and that of the new representative coaches, Craig Dowd and Jeff Wilson, allowed the Clubs full use of their top players.

Methodology – Quantitative research was carried out on Fiji’s OSOs using the readiness assessment tool developed by Minikin (2009) and qualitative research into the Fiji Rugby Union (“FRU or Fiji Rugby”) that included semi- structured interviews, the review of several documents and participant observations. Findings – The quantitative research on Fiji’s OSOs found that: (1) there is a need for strategic management to improve accountability, transparency and competitiveness; and, (2) governance is of a basic to moderate level of development, however, organisational performance is not being adequately evaluated or monitored, if at all, and that generally the practice of strategic leadership and strategic planning is below the Sport Industry Benchmark. The case study of the FRU found that the FRU Strategic Plan was not fit for its purpose; discussed the vision, values and strategic objectives of the FRU; and, proposed a methodology for revising the FRU Strategic Plan.

  • Terrorism in the Sports Pages
Refereed Articles: September 11 Terrorism in the Sports Pages. By E.W.Mason, Senior Lecturer in Communication, UNITEC Institute of Technology. Presented to Journalism Education Association Conference, Waiariki Institute of Technology, Rotorua, November 29-30, 2001 A Preliminary Look at New Zealand Print Media Reaction to the September 11 (September 12) Terror Attacks in New York and Washington. New Zealand’s major daily and Sunday print outlets were as surprised as all other media at the sudden terror attacks on the World Trade Center and Pentagon. The story was front page news for weeks but how did the sports writers in the print media react to such an apparently non sports story? This paper is a preliminary look at the first weeks of sports coverage in two major New Zealand dailies representing two ownership groups and the leading Sunday newspaper. It will examine news selection, editorial opinion and local impact of the developing world crisis. In addition some sports stories flowed over into the general and international news pages where the symbolic nature of sport became the key factor in choosing copy and photographs. (McKernan 1979 p.1) Sport is symbolic of a settled way of life in New Zealand and the United States. (Seagrave 2000 p.61) This perception was surely rent, forever according to some media commentators, by the images flowing from the World Trade Center. Sports writers and sports people had a brutal awakening to their apparently redefined place in a dramatically unsettled world. How was this represented in the sports pages in Auckland and Wellington? Theory concerning media coverage of traumatic events and the relationship between government policy and media content may prove helpful in analysing New Zealand print media coverage of the terror attacks.
