Nous vous sommes reconnaissants de l'honneur que vous avez bien voulu faire à notre institution en choisissant d'y venir. L'événement qui nous réunit tire sa signification. me semble-t-il. d'un profond besoin d'échanges et de concertations. Cette conviction commune me paraît soutenir l'à-propos et lintérêt du thème soumis ~t notre examen: la conservation des légumineuses alimentaires en Afrique. Il est bon de rappeler, Mesdames, Messieurs, qu'aucun pays africain ne dispose, à l'heure actuelle, d'un inventaire complet des méthodes tradi­ tionnelles de conservation des denrées alimentaires. Les solutions préconisées çà et là ne dépassent guère le cadre des frontières nationales par insuffisance des échanges d'expériences entre pays. De ce fait, ce colloque a un but précis: il est destiné à faire mieux connaître ce que représente l'effort de recherche à l'ensemble des personnes qu'il concerne, dans la sphère politique, dans les mondes économique.

What are Neglected and Underutilized Species? • Neglected and Underutilized Species are species whose potential has not been fully realized, • They are non-commodity crops, and are part of a larger biodiversity portfolio, more popular in the past and neglected today by users’ groups and in particular by research and development sector • They include thousands of locally domesticated and wild species which are rich in nutrients and are adapted to low input agriculture. • Such local foods contribute to dietary diversity and play a key role in supporting rural livelihoods. Common features of neglected and underutilized species • Of local importance in consumption and production systems, • Highly adapted to agro-ecological niches/marginal areas, • Receive scarce attention by national agricultural and biodiversity conservation policies, research and development, • Represented only by ecotypes/landraces, • Their use relies solely on indigenous knowledge, • Scarcely represented in ex situ collections. Strategic factors for promoting NUS There are several strategic factors that need to be taken into account to successfully promote underutilized species and, at the same time, ensure that benefits are equally distributed among community members.

These crops can be promoted to meet food and nutrition security goals in low-income countries. Here, we investigated the status of Kersting’s groundnut (Macrotyloma geocarpum, Fabaceae), a neglected pulse in West Africa. We explored its diversity, the production systems, the production constraints and farmers’ preferences in Burkina Faso and Ghana. Focus groups and semi-structured interviews were conducted in 39 villages with 86 respondents grouped in five sociolinguistic groups. Our results indicated that Macrotyloma geocarpum was produced in three cultivation systems: in the first system, farmers grew Kersting’s groundnut in fields, mostly on mounds or on ridges; in the second system, farmers grew it as field border; and in the third system, no clear tillage practice was identified.

  • Appendix 1 Vernacular Names
    Appendix 1 Vernacular Names The vernacular names listed below have been collected from the literature. Few have phonetic spellings. Spelling is not helped by the difficulties of transcribing unwritten languages into European syllables and Roman script. Some languages have several names for the same species. Further complications arise from the various dialects and corruptions within a language, and use of names borrowed from other languages. Where the people are bilingual the person recording the name may fail to check which language it comes from. For example, in northern Sahel where Arabic is the lingua franca, the recorded names, supposedly Arabic, include a number from local languages. Sometimes the same name may be used for several species. For example, kiri is the Susu name for both Adansonia digitata and Drypetes afzelii. There is nothing unusual about such complications. For example, Grigson (1955) cites 52 English synonyms for the common dandelion (Taraxacum officinale) in the British Isles, and also mentions several examples of the same vernacular name applying to different species. Even Theophrastus in c. 300 BC complained that there were three plants called strykhnos, which were edible, soporific or hallucinogenic (Hort 1916). Languages and history are linked and it is hoped that understanding how lan- guages spread will lead to the discovery of the historical origins of some of the vernacular names for the baobab. The classification followed here is that of Gordon (2005) updated and edited by Blench (2005, personal communication). Alternative family names are shown in square brackets, dialects in parenthesis. Superscript Arabic numbers refer to references to the vernacular names; Roman numbers refer to further information in Section 4.

Corresponding E-mail: [email protected] ABSTRACT: Seeds of five different landrace cultivars of Kersting’s groundnut, Macrotyloma geocarpum (Harms) Marechal and Baudet, obtained from northern Ghana, were evaluated for their suscep- tibility to infestation and damage by the pulse beetle, Callosobruchus maculatus Fab. The com- pletely randomized design was used to obtain data on the oviposition, developmental period, progeny emergence, weight loss in seeds and susceptibility index. The results showed that the Nakpanduri-white, Heng-mottle and Damongo-cream landrace cultivars proved to be the highly preferred hosts to C. maculatus, recording the highest egg load and progeny emergence, as well as the shortest egg-adult developmental period, and highest seed weight loss. The Najung-black landrace cultivar was the least preferred, followed by the Nakori-brown cultivars. Results from susceptibility indices further indicated that the Najung-black and Nakori-brown were the least susceptible to C. maculatus, while Nakpanduri-white was the most susceptible.
