  • The Cultural Traffic of Classic Indonesian Exploitation Cinema
The Cultural Traffic of Classic Indonesian Exploitation Cinema Ekky Imanjaya Thesis submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy University of East Anglia School of Art, Media and American Studies December 2016 © This copy of the thesis has been supplied on condition that anyone who consults it is understood to recognise that its copyright rests with the author and that use of any information derived there from must be in accordance with current UK Copyright Law. In addition, any quotation or extract must include full attribution. 1 Abstract Classic Indonesian exploitation films (originally produced, distributed, and exhibited in the New Order’s Indonesia from 1979 to 1995) are commonly negligible in both national and transnational cinema contexts, in the discourses of film criticism, journalism, and studies. Nonetheless, in the 2000s, there has been a global interest in re-circulating and consuming this kind of films. The films are internationally considered as “cult movies” and celebrated by global fans. This thesis will focus on the cultural traffic of the films, from late 1970s to early 2010s, from Indonesia to other countries. By analyzing the global flows of the films I will argue that despite the marginal status of the films, classic Indonesian exploitation films become the center of a taste battle among a variety of interest groups and agencies. The process will include challenging the official history of Indonesian cinema by investigating the framework of cultural traffic as well as politics of taste, and highlighting the significance of exploitation and B-films, paving the way into some findings that recommend accommodating the movies in serious discourses on cinema, nationally and globally.

  • Political Public Relations in Indonesia: a History of Propaganda and Democracy
Vol. 16, No. 1 Political Public Relations in Indonesia: A History of Propaganda and Democracy Rendro Dhani, Murdoch University Terence Lee, Murdoch University Kate Fitch, Murdoch University Abstract As an independent state once under Dutch and Japanese occupation, the forms of government communication in Indonesia range from using conventional and colonial propaganda to the professionalisation of political public relations. This paper offers a brief history of how Indonesian leaders used propaganda and public relations strategies in order to understand the social and political contexts underpinning the development of political public relations in Indonesia. It argues that the expansion of political public relations in Indonesia coincided with the country’s political reform, including liberalisation of the press, freedom of speech and expression, as well as advances in information and communication technologies. The findings reported in this paper confirm that the emergence of modern political public relations in Indonesia is closely linked to the broader democratisation of the country, including significant shifts in the electoral process. In its analysis, the paper offers new insights into the development of political public relations in Indonesia. Keywords: propaganda, political public relations, government communication, Indonesia Vol. 16, No. 1 https://ojs.deakin.edu.au/index.php/apprj Political Public Relations in Indonesia: A History of Propaganda and Democracy Introduction Public relations is often equated with propaganda and therefore tends to be associated with negative connotations, such as lies, spin, deception, and manipulation (see, for example, Kuitenbrouwer, 2014; McNair, 2004; Miller & Dinan, 2008; Moloney, 2006; Myers, 2015; Robertson, 2014). Many scholars believe that public relations is an unseen power (see, for example, Cutlip, 1994; Heath, 2009) and therefore profoundly undemocratic (McNair, 2004; Miller & Dinan, 2008).

  • Rethinking National Identity in an Age of Commercial Islam: the Television Industry, Religious Soap Operas, and Indonesian Youth
Rethinking National Identity in an Age of Commercial Islam: The Television Industry, Religious Soap Operas, and Indonesian Youth by Inaya Rakhmani, S.Sos (UI), MA (UvA) This thesis is presented for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy at Murdoch University 2013 I declare that this thesis is my own account of my research and contains as its main content work which has not previously been submitted for a degree at any tertiary institution. ………………………………………….. Inaya Rakhmani ii ABSTRACT This thesis is about what it means to be Indonesian in an age of commercial Islam. It set out to understand the growing trend of “Islamisation” in Indonesian television after the end of the authoritarian New Order regime (1962 to 1998), which coincided with the rise of Islamic commodification in other sectors (Fealy, 2008). To achieve this, the thesis looks at the institutional practices, Islamic representation, and the reception of the most-watched television format with an Islamic theme, sinetron religi (religious drama). Studies on Indonesian television so far have focused on its structure, construct, and audience as separate entities (e.g. Sen & Hill, 2000; Kitley, 2000; Ida, 2006; Barkin, 2004; Loven, 2008). This thesis is the first research on Indonesian television that understands the institutional frameworks, identity constructs, and its reception as a whole. As the industry’s livelihood is determined by advertising revenue that relies on audience ratings, it is in the interest of the television stations to broadcast Islamic symbols that are acceptable to the general, “national” viewers. This study takes a look into the tension between Islamic ideologies and commercial interest in the practices that surround sinetron religi.

  • Indonesia's Sustainable Development Projects
a INDONESIA’S SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT PROJECTS PREFACE Indonesia highly committed to implementing and achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Under the coordination of the Ministry of National Development Planning/Bappenas, Indonesia has mainstreamed SDGs into National Medium-Term Development Plan (RPJMN) and elaborated in the Government Work Plan (RKP) annual budget documents. In its implementation, Indonesia upholds the SDGs principles, namely (i) universal development principles, (ii) integration, (iii) no one left behind, and (iv) inclusive principles. Achievement of the ambitious SDGs targets, a set of international commitments to end poverty and build a better world by 2030, will require significant investment. The investment gap for the SDGs remains significant. Additional long-term resources need to be mobilized from all resources to implement the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. In addition, it needs to be ensured that investment for the SDGs is inclusive and leaves no one behind. Indonesia is one of the countries that was given the opportunity to offer investment opportunities related to sustainable development in the 2019 Sustainable Development Goals Investment (SDGI) Fair in New York on April 15-17 2019. The SDGI Fair provides a platform, for governments, the private sectors, philanthropies and financial intermediaries, for “closing the SDG investment gap” through its focus on national and international efforts to accelerate the mobilization of sufficient investment for sustainable development. Therefore, Indonesia would like to take this opportunity to convey various concrete investment for SDGs. The book “Indonesia’s Sustainable Development Project” shows and describes investment opportunities in Indonesia that support the achievement of related SDGs goals and targets.

I would also like to thank Prof Kathryn Robinson for countless hours of fruitful discussion on masculinities in Indonesia and theories of masculinities.
