Peddie Girlv Crew Race Results May 14-15, 2021 Vs. Stotesbury Peddie Girls' Crew Race Results May 14-15, 2021 vs. Stotesbury Cup Regatta Conditions: Sunny and warm (low 70’s) for both days of racing with virtually no current (1900 cu.ft./sec Fri, 1800 cu.ft/sec Sat). Light tailwind for Friday’s and Saturday morning’s races. 6 mph SW headwind for Saturday afternoon’s finals. Line-ups: Senior 4+ Junior 4+ C Rhea Bakshi C Nikki Saffar 4 Aisling Creed 4 Jasmine Zhao 3 Clara Middleton 3 Grace Edelstein 2 Olivia Testa 2 Madinah Drinkard B Aylin Karagozoglu B Mimi Brick Comments: Without a doubt, this has been a challenging year. I could not have been more proud of the efforts the girls put in this weekend at the Stotesbury Cup Regatta in Philadelphia. Due to Covid restrictions on public gatherings in the city, only the finalists from the 2019 regatta were invited initially plus some petitioned crews as space allowed. Normally the largest high school regatta in the country, the events in which we competed had barely half the entries we normally see. In spite of the smaller field size, the quality was as high as ever, and the girls rose to the occasion. AP exam conflicts and Stotesbury rules precluding seniors from rowing in a junior event caused us to reconfigure our 2nd four for the Junior Four event. Comprised this week entirely of novices from the fall of 2019 and one new novice from this spring, the girls did a great job finishing 11th in their time trial in this very competitive category. In spite of a valiant effort and improved performance in the semis, our Junior crew came up short in qualifying for the finals. They retained an 11th place overall finish and gained valuable experience for next year. Well done! The Senior Four rowed a brilliant race in their time trial finishing 3rd of 22 crews. Racing completely within and for themselves, they attacked the course as if for the last time and rowed their best race yet this spring. The semifinals didn’t go quite as well, but the will of the entire crew drove them to the third place needed to qualify for the finals. The exclusion of 2nd place Hill for interference moved our crew up into 2nd and put them in the lane next to Radnor, the crew that was 0.3 seconds behind them in the time trial for the final. It was clear from the start that the Senior Four intended to achieve its goals in the Final. I put my video camera away and just watched the race unfold from my bike. By the halfway point, our bow had moved into 3rd place. The crew defended that position and extended its margin over Radnor while shifting focus to pursuing Blair, sitting about a length and a half ahead. Stroke by stroke, the open water gap closed. Then our bow overlapped with Blair’s stern. For a moment, it appeared we had disrupted Blair’s rhythm and had a chance at second place, but Blair rallied and stalled our progress. The race concluded with Montclair in first, Blair 2nd, and Peddie 3rd, closer to Blair than we’d been all spring. Given that the vast majority of our team took their last strokes on the water in October of 2019 (only 8 rowers and one coxswain practiced 10 times on our Spring 2020 training trip before everything shut down), that our competitors rowed in the fall in some form, and that we were blown off the water nearly 50% of this spring, this year’s Stotes bronze medal repeat was extraordinary and extraordinarily satisfying. I have never been more proud of a crew. Special shout out to Aylin Karagozolu, who was the lone sophomore in the 2019 bronze medal Senior Four. Congrats on your two-peat! Thank you to Mr. Lepcio, Mr. Sodano, Ms. Gartner and all who were determined to get us safely on back on the water this spring. It meant more than you know. • Blueprint for Individual Scholastic Rowers
A 501(c)3 Not-for-Profit Incorporation 137 Bergen Avenue #C4 • Ridgefield Park, NJ 07660 www.bcrowingacademy.com (201) 320-2951 Blueprint for Students Who Want to Row for Their High School Introduction Over the past twenty years, rowing has become an increasingly more popular sport in High Schools across the Northeastern United States. It is a Spring sport among the scholastic varsity sports. The Bergen County Rowing Academy (BCRA), whose mission it is to provide rowing instruction and coaching for all age and skill levels to Bergen County residents, offers Bergen County schools the opportunity to make rowing available to their students with no to minimal financial outlay. According to Wikipedia1, “Rowing, often referred to as crew in the United States, is a sport with origins back to Ancient Egyptian times. (…) Modern rowing as a competitive sport can be traced to the early 18th century when races were held between professional watermen on the River Thames in London, United Kingdom. (…) Rowing is one of the oldest Olympic sports. It was on the programme for the 1896 games but the rowing did not take place due to bad weather. It has been competed since 1900. Women's rowing was added to the Olympic programme in 1976.” “Rowing is the oldest intercollegiate sport in the United States.” The Bergen County Rowing Academy, which holds a lease with the County of Bergen for a boat pen in Overpeck County Park, has developed an easy way for schools to allow their students to participate in scholastic rowing competitions. High school rowers from Northern New Jersey typically participate in competitions organized through the Philadelphia Scholastic Rowing Association2, the Overpeck Regional Youth Regatta (our home race), the Garden State Scholastic Championships, and the Stotesbury Cup Regatta3.
