Including his tenure at Saint Joseph’s, Quinlan has amassed two decades of collegiate head coaching experience. The Hawks were in a rebuilding mode in 2011‐12 after losing its most successful four‐year class to graduation, but the crew posted solid results to build upon in the future. Saint Joseph’s medaled in three events at the Atlantic 10 Championships, and at the Aberdeen Dad Vail Regatta, the defending champion Second Varsity 8 earned a bronze medal for its third consecutive medal in the prestigious event. At the 2012 Dad Vails, he was presented with the Matthew Ledwith Coach’s Award, which is given to the outstanding coach from the previous year’s regatta. Quinlan’s 2011 crew had one of the best seasons in school history, highlighted by two firsts for the program ‐ a gold medal at the Aberdeen Dad Vail Regatta and the team title in the Atlantic 10 Championships. The Hawks’ Second Varsity 8 captured the program’s first Dad Vail gold medal and the Varsity 4 took home a silver, to help SJU finish sec‐ ond in the team standings. Saint Joseph’s won the Freshman 8 at the conference meet, and earned top‐three finish‐ QUINLAN’S RÉSUMÉ es in three other events to give the Hawks the league’s team crown for the first time ever. In 2010, the Hawks main‐ tained their status as one of the top teams in the Atlantic 10 Conference, turned in medal‐winning performances (one silver, two bronze) at the Aberdeen Dad Vail Regatta, and ended the year with a trip to the prestigious Henley Royal Head Rowing Coach Regatta for the second time in school history. SJU’s Varsity 8 also set a record in becoming the only team to advance Saint Joseph’s (W) 1999‐Present to the Grand Final at the Dad Vail Regatta for six consecutive years. La Salle (M&W) 1997‐98 The 2009 Hawks earned a number of firsts for the program. Saint Joseph’s won its first‐ever Atlantic 10 titles as the Northwestern (M&W) 1991‐97 Varsity 8 and Quad boats earned the gold medals at the conference championships. Quinlan was recognized as the Notre Dame (W) 1989‐91 Atlantic 10 Coach of the Year for the first time in his career, while the Hawks matched their best‐ever team result with a third‐place finish. The Hawks earned a bronze medal, which gave them the most medals of any team in the previous Assistant Rowing Coach four years. SJU’s Freshman 8 also advanced to the Grand Final for the seventh consecutive season. Saint Joseph’s (M&W) 1998‐99 In 2008, Quinlan’s charges placed a then best‐ever third as a team at the Atlantic 10 Championship. The Varsity 8 boat earned its first‐ever medal at A‐10s, placing second, while also taking first at the Jesuit Invitational and the Kelly Cup. The rest of the Hawks also dominated at the city‐wide Kelly Cup races, taking first place in every contest. Quinlan guided the Hawks to victory in the Varsity 8 at the 2006 Dad Vail Regatta while that crew earned the school’s first‐ever trip to the Henley Royal Regatta in England. The Hawks rowed to a silver‐medal finish in the Dad Vail Varsity 8 in 2007 while the Freshman 8 took silver in 2008. During his tenure the Hawks have won three gold medals, six silvers, and five bronze medals at the Dad Vail Regatta. SJU has finished second in the women’s point trophy standings twice and combined with the Hawks’ men’s team to win the Dad Vail Overall Points Trophy in 2005, 2006 and 2010. Since his arrival at SJU in 1999, Quinlan has been one of the driving forces behind the growth of both the women’s and men’s rowing programs, nearly doubling participation during his tenure. Quinlan has been active in the development of the Robert M. Gillin, Jr. Boathouse, which opened in 2002, while main‐ taining alumni support and coordinating several local regattas, including the Jesuit Invitational Regatta. Quinlan’s résumé includes a six‐year stint as the head coach of Northwestern University’s men’s and women’s programs and a three‐year stretch as the head women’s coach at the University of Notre Dame. His teams have won medals at the Dad Vail Regatta, the Champion International Collegiate Regatta and the Head of the Charles, and have competed in the Henley Royal Regatta and the Mexico City International Championships. A 1991 graduate of Notre Dame, Quinlan spent his prep career rowing at Monsignor Bonner High School in Drexel Hill, Pa. He and his wife Linda, a Hawks’ assistant coach, reside in Philadelphia with their daughter, Maeve. Gerry Quinlan was named the 2009 Atlantic 10 Coach of the Year after guiding the Hawks to wins in the Varsity 8 and the Quad at the league championship. 2012‐13 SAINT JOSEPH’S WOMEN’S ROWING MEDIA GUIDE 2 ASSISTANT COACHES Linda Quinlan Assistant Coach Loyola (Md.) ‘00 - 13th Season Linda Quinlan is in her 13th season as an assistant coach at Saint Joseph’s and works primarily with the freshman squad. A 501(c)3 Not-for-Profit Incorporation 137 Bergen Avenue #C4 • Ridgefield Park, NJ 07660 www.bcrowingacademy.com (201) 320-2951 Blueprint for Students Who Want to Row for Their High School Introduction Over the past twenty years, rowing has become an increasingly more popular sport in High Schools across the Northeastern United States. It is a Spring sport among the scholastic varsity sports. The Bergen County Rowing Academy (BCRA), whose mission it is to provide rowing instruction and coaching for all age and skill levels to Bergen County residents, offers Bergen County schools the opportunity to make rowing available to their students with no to minimal financial outlay. According to Wikipedia1, “Rowing, often referred to as crew in the United States, is a sport with origins back to Ancient Egyptian times. (…) Modern rowing as a competitive sport can be traced to the early 18th century when races were held between professional watermen on the River Thames in London, United Kingdom. (…) Rowing is one of the oldest Olympic sports. It was on the programme for the 1896 games but the rowing did not take place due to bad weather. It has been competed since 1900. Women's rowing was added to the Olympic programme in 1976.” “Rowing is the oldest intercollegiate sport in the United States.” The Bergen County Rowing Academy, which holds a lease with the County of Bergen for a boat pen in Overpeck County Park, has developed an easy way for schools to allow their students to participate in scholastic rowing competitions. High school rowers from Northern New Jersey typically participate in competitions organized through the Philadelphia Scholastic Rowing Association2, the Overpeck Regional Youth Regatta (our home race), the Garden State Scholastic Championships, and the Stotesbury Cup Regatta3.

Peddie Girls' Crew Race Results May 14-15, 2021 vs. Stotesbury Cup Regatta Conditions: Sunny and warm (low 70’s) for both days of racing with virtually no current (1900 cu.ft./sec Fri, 1800 cu.ft/sec Sat). Light tailwind for Friday’s and Saturday morning’s races. 6 mph SW headwind for Saturday afternoon’s finals. Line-ups: Senior 4+ Junior 4+ C Rhea Bakshi C Nikki Saffar 4 Aisling Creed 4 Jasmine Zhao 3 Clara Middleton 3 Grace Edelstein 2 Olivia Testa 2 Madinah Drinkard B Aylin Karagozoglu B Mimi Brick Comments: Without a doubt, this has been a challenging year. I could not have been more proud of the efforts the girls put in this weekend at the Stotesbury Cup Regatta in Philadelphia. Due to Covid restrictions on public gatherings in the city, only the finalists from the 2019 regatta were invited initially plus some petitioned crews as space allowed. Normally the largest high school regatta in the country, the events in which we competed had barely half the entries we normally see. In spite of the smaller field size, the quality was as high as ever, and the girls rose to the occasion. AP exam conflicts and Stotesbury rules precluding seniors from rowing in a junior event caused us to reconfigure our 2nd four for the Junior Four event. Comprised this week entirely of novices from the fall of 2019 and one new novice from this spring, the girls did a great job finishing 11th in their time trial in this very competitive category. In spite of a valiant effort and improved performance in the semis, our Junior crew came up short in qualifying for the finals.
