Art as Spiritual Perception.531798.i05.indd 22 6/11/12 3:02 PM INTRODUCTION You Will See Greater Things than These: John Walford’s Content- oriented Method of Art History1 JAMES ROMAINE John Walford’s art historical methodology may be described as see- ing in pursuit of meaning. As evidenced in Jacob van Ruisdael and the Perception of Landscape (Yale University Press, 1991) and Great Themes in Art (Prentice-Hall, 2002), he examines the artwork as a consumma- tion of a process of perception by which invisible and inherent content is made manifest. Through a careful study of the art object’s formal and iconographic elements, as well as the historical, social, and reli- gious context in which the work was created, Walford perceives and describes this essential significance. As a writer and educator, he has modeled this content-oriented method2 of perception, opening up a world of visual pleasure, intellectual contemplation, and spiritual sub- stance to his readers and students.

Cornelis van Haarlem sets the scene in a darkened room, lit only by candlelight. Christ is seated, with outstretched arms, at the centre of a long table, surrounded by the twelve apostles. The artist depicts the moment following Christ’s prediction that one among the assembled company will betray him. The drama focuses upon the reactions of the disciples, as they turn to one another, with gestures of surprise and disbelief. John can be identified as the apostle sitting in front of Christ who, as the gospel relates, ‘leaned back close to Jesus and asked, “Lord, who is it?”ii and Andrew, an old man with a forked beard, can be seen at the right-hand end of the table. Only Judas, recognisable by the purse of money he holds in his right handiii, turns away from the table and casts a shifty glance towards the viewer. The bread rolls on the table and the wine flagon held by the apostle on the right make reference to the sacrament of the eucharist. This previously unrecorded painting, dating from 1636, is a late work by Cornelis van Haarlem and is characteristic of the moderate classicism which informed his work from around 1600 onwards.

Cartographic Styles and Discourse MAGIS Brugge: Visualizing Marcus Gerards’ 16th-century Map through its 21st-century Digitization Elien Vernackt * MAGIS Brugge Project Abstract Marcus Gerards delivered his town plan of Bruges in 1562 and managed to capture the imagination of viewers ever since. The 21st-century digitization project MAGIS Brugge, supported by the Flemish government, has helped to treat this map as a primary source worthy of examination itself, rather than as a decorative illustration for local history. Signed with monogram and dated upper right: ‘CH. 1604’ Provenance Private collection, New York Cornelis Cornelisz, who himself added ‘van Haarlem’ to his name, was one of the leading figures of Dutch Mannerism, together with his townsman Hendrick Goltzius and Abraham Bloemaert from Utrecht. He was born in 1562 in a well-to-do Catholic family in Haarlem, where he first studied with Pieter Pietersz. At the age of seventeen he went to France, but at Rouen he had to turn back to avoid an outbreak of the plague and went instead to Antwerp, where he remained for a year with Gilles Coignet. The artist returned to Haarlem in 1581, and two years later, in 1583, he received his first important commission for a group portrait of a Haarlem militia company (now in the Frans Hals Museum, Haarlem). From roughly 1586 to 1591 Cornelis, together with Goltzius and Flemish émigré Karel van Mander formed a sort of “studio brotherhood” which became known as the ‘Haarlem Academy’. In the 1590’s he continued to receive many important commissions from the Municipality and other institutions. Before 1603, he married the daughter of a Haarlem burgomaster. In 1605, he inherited a third of his wealthy father-in-law’s estate; his wife died the following year. From an illicit union with Margriet Pouwelsdr, Cornelis had a daughter Maria in 1611.

A series of samples was taken and cross-sections were prepared. The pigments and the binding medium were identified and compared to the materials readily available in 17th century Holland. Black and white, infra-red and ultra-violet photographs as well as X-radiographs were taken and are discussed. The results of this study were compared to 17th c. materials and techniques and to the literature. 3 INTRODUCTION The "Man with a Beer Keg" (oil on canvas 83cm x 66cm), painted around 1630 - 1633) appears in the literature in 1932. [1] It was discovered in London in 1930. It had been in private hands and was, at the time, celebrated as an example of an unsuspected and startling find of an old master.

    9 Self-Portraiture 1400–1700 H. Perry Chapman In his biography of Albrecht Dürer, published in Het schilder-boeck (The Painter Book, 1604), Karel van Mander describes holding in his hands Dürer’s Self- Portrait of 1500 (fig. 9.1).1 Van Mander, the Dutch painter-biographer who wrote the lives of the Netherlandish and German painters (see chapter 24), was on his way home from Italy in 1577. He had stopped in Nuremberg, where he saw Dürer’s Self-Portrait in the town hall. Van Mander’s account conveys Dürer’s fame, as both the greatest German artist of the Renaissance and a maker of self- portraits. It tells us that self-portraits were collected and displayed, in this case by the city of Nuremberg. Above all, Van Mander’s remarks demonstrate that, by 1600, self-portrait was a concept. Though there was as yet no term for self- portrait (autoritratto dates to the eighteenth century, Selbstbildniss and “self-portrait” to the nineteenth), a portrait of an artist made by that artist was regarded as a distinctive pictorial type. The self-portrait had acquired a mystique, because the artist had come to be regarded as a special person with a special gift. The topos “every painter paints himself” conveyed the idea that a painter invariably put something of him/herself into his/her art. More than any other kind of artistic creation, the self-portrait was regarded as a manifestation of the artist’s ineffable presence in the work. Today we tend to think of self-portrayal as a private process and of the self- portrait as the product of introspection.

In the wake of the Dutch Revolt of that severed the formerly conjoined Low Countries into the largely Catholic regions of Flanders, controlled by the Spanish Habsburgs, and the predominately Protestant Dutch Republic, which fought for the political independence that it officially achieved inDutch art developed a distinctive, if not revolutionary, character. During the period, there was a multifaceted and unprecedented flowering of diverse secular genres, from still life to landscape to genre image to portrait. Each of these types of subjects had historical precedent, but they had not existed as independent genres complete with individuals who specialized in the creation of just one category of art. Many artists employed a highly naturalistic mode of representation when crafting these secular genres, as did those who produced the histories and biblical narratives that also remained popular. In paintings and prints, artists largely strove for naturalistic representations of space, volumetric renderings of objects, seemingly accurate depictions of light, and unidealized formulations of the human body, especially the face. Like the new forms, art was consumed in way that it had not been previously. The relatively wide distribution of wealth in the Dutch Republic led to more people, and people of different social levels, buying art than had occurred previously in Europe.

Painters in fifteenth-century Florence, such as Domenico Veneziano, used different optical features than their contemporaries in Bruges, the likes of Jan Van Eyck, to create the illusion of space. Gombrich commented: „We all associate Florentine art with the development of central perspective, and thus with the mathematical method of revealing form in ambient light. The other aspect of optical theory, the reaction of light to various surfaces, was first explored in modern times by painters North of the Alps. It was there that the mastery of lustre, sparkle and glitter was first achieved, permitting the artist to convey the peculiar character of materials. Indeed, for a time, during the first decades of the fifteenth century, the two schools of painting appeared thus to have divided the kingdom of appearances between them.‟1 While Italian painters of the fifteenth century used perspective, Netherlandish artists studied and painted the reflection of light from surfaces of different textures and materials to create the illusion of space. For Gombrich, the point of contact between North and South was Leonardo da Vinci, „the greatest explorer of natural appearances‟, who must have been „a keen student of Northern painting‟.2 Here I am less interested in Gombrich‟s geography of optics, but more in how his juxtaposition of perspective and painterly light reflects and complicates the historiography of perspective.     REMBRANDT’S LAUGHTER AND THE LOVE OF ART* H. Perry Chapman From the beginning of his career to the end, Rembrandt advertised his ability to represent not just emotions but also more enduring inner states or character traits through expressive self-portraits. This essay argues that through laughter, an unusual expression in a self-portrait, Rembrandt claimed to be an impassioned representer of the passions. To this end, it examines some of his earliest painted and etched self-portraits, his Self-Portrait with Saskia of about 1636, in Dresden, and the late Self-Portrait, in Cologne, all of which feature Rembrandt’s laughing face. It concludes that Rembrandt’s laughter also displays his delight in his mastery of the emotions. In 1718, in the first extensive biography of Rembrandt, Arnold Houbraken criticized Rembrandt as a breaker of rules, both artistic and social, yet the only work of Rart that Houbraken chose to reproduce in his entire three-volume book of biographies was a drawing of the Supper at Emmaus (fig. 1) that revealed Rembrandt’s “close observation of the various emotions.”1 Rembrandt’s former pupil Samuel van Hoogstraten, writing in 1672, characterized Rembrandt as a master at representing the “movements of the soul.”2 Even before Rembrandt had left Leiden, his earliest champion, Constantijn Huygens, secretary to Stadtholder Frederik Hendrik, had predicted that Rembrandt would be unsurpassed in rendering emotions.
